"When we cross the border: no ID, and it's kiss yourself good-bye if Charlie gets ahold of you."

In Vietnam, the Military Assistance Command's Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG) fielded small recon teams in areas infested with VC and NVA. Because SOG operations suffered extraordinary casualties, they required extraordinary soldiers. So when Capt. Thom Nicholson arrived at Command and Control North (CCN) in Da Nang, SOG's northernmost base camp, he knew he was going to be working with the cream of the crop.

As commander of Company B, CCN's Raider Company, Nicholson commanded four platoons, comprising nearly two hundred men, in some of the war's most deadly missions, including ready-reaction missions for patrols in contact with the enemy, patrol extractions under fire, and top-secret expeditions "over the fence" into Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam. Colonel Nicholson spares no one, including himself, as he provides a rare glimpse into the workings of one of the military's most carefully concealed reconnaissance campaigns.

Thom was born in Missouri and raised around Ft Smith, Arkansas. He grew up watching local rodeos and admiring the bronc riders until he found out the hard way just how demanding that profession was. After an engineering degree, he joined the US Army and served as a green beret for thirty years, serving in Vietnam, South America, and Africa. In Vietnam he was a raider company commander for a cross-border operations unit. He retired from the Army in the late nineties as a Colonel and has been writing since. He is a graduate of the National Defense University and instructed at the Command and General Staff School. He has his MBA from Pepperdine University and is a Registered Engineer and a Enrolled Agent for the IRS. He skis, scuba dives and plays a fairly mean game of Golf. He and his wife Sandy live in Colorado, close to the ski slopes and the grandkids.

I looked forward to reading this book every night at bed time. It had me hooked from start to finish and I hated to reach its end. It's the kind of book I love, first hand experiences and stories of the authors' 15 months of service in Vietnam. There's a great story at the end of the author trying to stop a sabatour from mining a major road close to base, the planning, hunting and the ultimate surprise of who the sabatour was. Another great story is of the giant upside down pie pan platform in the trees experiment while being hunted in enemy territory. I loved this book.

Good read. A lot.like every other Vietnam era book. Truthful in the fear evoked by combat and not too gung hoo

Thom Nicholson's book is an insightful record of the experiences of a Captain commanding a SOG Company in Vietnam.
It details the ultimate futility felt by the soldiers, after their initial sense of duty & enthusiasm had been eroded by the death & wounding of their mates; the requirement to fulfil stupid orders handed down from backroom commanders; the need to expend lives & assets in attacking & securing enemy positions, only to retire & allow the enemy to regain the area; the difference in living standards between active front-line troops & the REMFs.
Thom expresses the anguish of having close comrades KIA, especially by friendly fire, & the emotional reaction of not wishing to become close to other replacements. This situation was common in Vietnam, where replacements found it initially difficult to be accepted by the ''veterans'', as the life-expectancy of the ''cherries'' during their learning curve could be short.
The book is well written, & his vivid descriptions of actions & events can make you feel that you are there with him, both seeing & feeling it.
Thom's outstanding military service in Vietnam was a life-changing experience, as it was for most of the front-line & LRRP troops.
Thank you Thom, for recording & sharing it with us.

I liked the suspenseful & harrowing accounts of combat where SOG members were constantly outnumbered by a superior enemy force.

So far good book!! Only about 1/3 through it

I read this book expecting a narrative about being in the SOG in Vietnam. Instead it spends it's time dealing mainly with the thoughts and emotions of Capt. Nicholson and his dealings with the PRU. It was a slow book and really didn't give a person a feeling of caring about what happened to the Capt. or his men.
When I think of SOG I think more about the behind the lines missions that were cut out for 3-6 man patrols. That is where the heart of SOG stands or falls.

Our service men and women desire to be led by dedicated and honorable leaders. This book showcases the deeds of one such leader. In a war that had no discernable end goal or a sound plan, our soldiers nevertheless performed admirably. They then came home to an America torn apart because of the war. God bless those who served.

Well written in an easy to follow manner. The author is very frank and descriptive about his feelings during and about the many hazardous encounters, and the inevitable losses he suffered. Whilst being able to touch your soul in deep reflection, he is able to interlace his narrative with tremendous wit.
I recommend this book to any one whose interest lies in military history, the Viet Nam war in particular of course.

I've read tons of Vietnam memoirs, this is formulaic in some senses - nothing particularly new or unread in other books - but still a very interesting read and well written.
