Bisexuality: The Psychology and Politics of an Invisible Minority 1st Edition

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 1 rating

This volume fills a gap in the literature on the subject of bisexuality and provides an insight into and clarification of this emerging paradigm shift in sexual orientation studies. The interdisciplinary range of contributors agree that, given recognition and validity, bisexuality has the explanatory power to illuminate many of those elements of sexual orientation and sexual identity which have, to date, remained unexplored.

Top review from the United States

Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2016
I am a bisexual man who is happily married to a supportive wife, and I am currently in the process of coming out to friends, family, and the world. To say it is challenging is an understatement.

I have been reading books and internet articles on bisexuality both to gain a better understanding and for personal inspiration as I've prepared to come out. There are two things that make this book so important to me.

First, it is a thoroughly researched, scholarly collection of important research. While other books have more in the way of direct personal and life stories, this book details the history and research of bisexuality and really satisfied my need to be informed with regard to the psychology and, for lack of a better word, scientific study of the area. I can't tell you how important it is to read peer-reviewed research that confirms that my experience as a bisexual is real, is valid, is shared by others. You can hear some of the same messages from an article here and a story there, but the totality of the collection has helped my understanding and sense of normalcy.

Second, and it's not a large portion of the book, but when Dr. Firestein gives her personal insight and plea to other bisexuals to join her and come out if they can, it is powerful and well-written.

This is a great book. It was published in the mid-90's, right before the Internet transformed so much of our information systems, but (and this may read weirdly), it's all the more powerful because of that. At least for me, it has been. I would recommend this book to anyone who might benefit from what I've described in this review.
