Many Christians think of end-times prophecy as a gigantic, intimidating puzzle—difficult to piece together and impossible to figure out. But every puzzle can be solved if you approach it the right way.

Paul Benware compares prophecy to a picture puzzle. Putting the edge pieces together first builds the 'framework' that makes it easier to fit the other pieces in their place. According to Benware, the framework for eschatology is the biblical covenants. He begins his comprehensive survey by explaining the major covenants. Then he discusses several different interpretations of end-times prophecy.

Benware digs into the details of the Rapture, the Great Tribulation, the judgements and resurrections, and the millennial kingdom. But he also adds a unique, personal element to the study, answering questions as:

  • Why study bible prophecy?
  • What difference does it make if I'm premillenial or amillenial?
If what the Bible says about the future puzzles you, Understanding End Times Prophecy will help you put together the pieces and see the big picture.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This book is a remarkably readable, clear, concise, and yet comprehensive discussion of future events.  It is the best volume of its kind on the subject--whether for individual study, group discussion, or as a course text.
-Thomas H. Cragoe, ThD, Interim Chair and Associate Professor of Bible, Cedarville University

For those seeking the broad panoramic view of future things, Understanding End Times Prophecy provides a valuable resource.  Benware, a veteran college teacher and conference speaker, effectively and clearly explains key definitions and critical issues related to the biblical narrative of prophetic truth.
-W. Sherrill Babb, President, Philadelphia Biblical University

The drama of biblical eschatology is often a technical and complex subject that can be bewildering to the uninitiated.  Dr. Paul Benware has offered a vital service by providing a compass to navigate the challenging prophetic terrain.  Understanding End Times Prophecy makes accessible an otherwise formidable and confusing subject.
-J. Gregory Behle, Professor of Christian Education, The Master's College, Sun Valley, Calif.

One of the finest works of its kind on the subject.  Dr. Benware's revision will bring prophecy students up to speed on new eschatological issues that are now having a negative effect on the doctrines that deal with the return of the Lord.
-Mal Couch, President, Tyndale Seminary, Fort Worth, Tex.

Millions have read the Left Behind books and have been inspired at this fictionalized rendering of the End Times.  Bible prophecy must be understood from a biblical foundation of God's covenants and His character.  Dr. Benware's book is a must for the student of God's Word to gain an understanding of the various views of the end times.  Read this book with an open Bible and stand in awe of our God and His plan for mankind.
-Brent D. Garrison, President, Southwestern College, Phoenix, Ariz.

Conflict, contradiction, and confusion: All words that describe current perspectives on end-times prophecy.  Thankfully, Dr. Paul Benware has provided a map to guide us out of the interpretive chaos and into a sound understanding of what the Bible has to say about the future.  Balanced, fair, and easy to understand, Dr. Benware has produced the single best text on eschatology.
-Michael Rydelnik, Professor of Jewish Studies, Moody Bible Institute, Author of Understanding the Arab-Israeli Conflict

From the Back Cover

Do you think what happens in the future doesn’t matter today? Think again. The author of Revelation prefaced his vision with the encouragement that the person who knows prophetic truths—and orders his life according to those truths—will live better now. The study of Bible prophecy… reminds us that God is sovereign.… reminds us that God is good.… motivates us to holy living.… helps us establish proper priorities.… gives us hope.  Paul Beware has these benefits in mind in this revised and expanded edition of his classic book. In this new edition he addresses the confusion and conflict surrounding the topic of prophecy, provides a biblical framework to clarify different interpretations—including pre-, a-, and postmillennialism, and includes an entire chapter on preterism. He also provides insight that can help you understand how these different explanations of Scripture have the power to shape your faith and offers tools to help you develop discernment.   This book is a remarkably readable, clear, concise, and yet comprehensive discussion of future events.  It is the best volume of its kind on the subject – whether for individual study, group discussion, or as a course text. Thomas H. Biblical prophecy can be tough to interpret. Dr Benware has a very personable way of writing and good teaching style. He breaks it all down for the reader. He teaches a dispensational view but does a great job of breaking explaining other points of view. I enjoyed this book and also looked him up on YT. He has alot of videos that supplement the book.

I fully appreciated the amount of research and time the author devoted to exegeting both Biblical and extrabiblical references. The author writes to inform for understanding and to be understood. He defines and defends his conclusions in a manner that really is left up to the reader to decide if it matters as truth or something else. This was one of twelve required reading among the books listed for CS Lewis Institute's - Inklings to read and discuss. I am new to this author but as an easy read, I will probably read others. I recommend this book for intermediate converts/believers to mature readers. It may be a bit overwhelming for new Christians in the faith.

The main point of view upheld by the author (dispensationalism) I think is given a lot of passes and doesn't do an adequate job to point out the flaws in the point of view or answer the objections well enough. But definitely would recommend to most who are starting out.

If you have an interest in gaining an understanding of the pretribulational dispensational view of end times prophecy, there are few better places you could start than with Dr. Benware's book. This book provides a solid overview of the pretrib/dispensational view of the events surrounding the Tribulation while bringing a good deal of background material in. The author divides his material into five parts, starting with an examination of how we should read prophecy in the Scriptures, then an overview of the various major views of Bible prophecy, then outlining future events based on a pretribulational/dispensational view, and finally examining the future of individuals within this prophectic system. Finally, there is an appendix of overviews of several specific passages important to understanding prophecy.

The first stand Dr. Benware takes in his book is that prophecy should be read literally.

"Prophecies that have been fulfilled completely have been fulfilled literally, and that gives us confidence to expect that those prophetic utterances that are not yet fulfilled (or completely fulfilled) will also end up being fulfilled literally. We believe that Jesus Christ will literally return to this earth and reign at His second coming because He literally came to this earth the first time, being born of the virgin Mary at Bethlehem. -Kindle Locations 551-554"

This is the classic argument for reading prophecy in a literal way --a line of reasoning that's difficult for those who believe most prophecy should be spiritualized to provide an answer for. There's not as much dealing with hermeneutics as I might like in this section, but the overview is good, and well argued. Following this discussing, Dr. Benware takes on the Abarahamic, Davidic, and New Covenants, and their relation to the prophetic literature. This is a topic that's often addressed, and therefore this material is useful.

The next section provides overviews for each of the major prophetic systems commonly held within the Christian church today, including amillennialism, postmillennialism, and preterism. Each system is carefully explained and critiqued. There are several sections here of interest that step outside the bounds of the section itself, including a discussion of Covenant Theology, and it's impact on eschatological belief, and a discussion about the term, "The Kingdom of God." Next the author provides an overview of coming prophetic events from a pretrib/dispensational point of view. In this section he deals with the mid-tribulational and partial rapture positions, as well.

Finally, Dr. Benware discusses the state of an individual after death and before the resurrection, and then the state of individuals after the Millennial reign of Christ on the Earth. The one disappointing section here deals with the Millennial sacrifices described by Ezekiel --the author holds that these are simply memorials, but sacrifices have never been memorials in the Scriptures. A more solid view of the meaning and purpose of these sacrifices would have added greatly to this section.

If you're trying to sort out the different views, and better understand the predispensational/pretribulational view, this is well worth reading.

I am very impressed by this book with regards to its thoroughness, ease to read and understand, careful dissection and consideration of all views of Eschatology. As a graduate student at a seminary, I have referrred to this book on numerous occasions, not just to aid me in writing papers, but for my own satisfaction in correctness in the pre-tribulational rapture position. I especially appreciate Benware's discussion in the pre-wrath view and why he believes that the 7 year tribulation and its events must all fall under the category of "God's wrath". I have understood very well that Christians will be spared the "wrath that is to come" (1 Thess. 1:10), however, only after reading Benware's explanation of the position that Believers will be pulled out before the Tribulation begins (found in chapter 14 of the book), do I feel satisfied with my my position. I also appreciate all the sources cited in the book from people such as Renald Showers, Paul Walvoord, Robert Thomas, and Fathers of the faith. Kudos to Dr. Benware for his painstaking work in writing this book and for his encouragement for the Breathren! Maranatha!

I have read over books on Revelation, including the Bible while others are good. I found this to be more coordinated and comprehensive than others. Others may have had additional material that this doesn't but they were not as easy to read nor as complete. I thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, I am going to read it a second time with my bible on hand to interrelate the Old Testament passages for future reading and study.

Usually books on end times can seem a little intimidating. Some books try to avoid this by not using technical terms or cutting back on biblical proofs. This book does neither of those things. Benware helps you understand the terms associated with end times, and he gives clear, logical, biblical proofs to defend his position. This book takes the position that after the 7-year tribulation, Jesus will physically come to earth to establish a literal 1000-year kingdom over the world. He also argues that the Rapture of the Church will take place before the Tribulation. Whether you agree with this position or not, you should read this book to understand the arguments for this position and the arguments against other positions. Benware writes in a tone that is respectful of other views, but he makes a clear biblical defense for what he thinks the Bible teaches. A book like this is a must read for anyone who is interested in what the Bible says about end times (pastors, lay teachers, seminary students).
