From the Back Cover
In his most incredible and eye-opening book to date, Brother Andrew invites you to experience the riveting true story of the Church in Islamic countries. In the Middle East, Christians struggle to come to grips with hostile governments, terrorist acts, and an influx of Muslims coming to Christ. The names and places have been changed to protect the real people in the real places. But the stories are true.
Secret Believers not only gives you a glimpse of the lives of these courageous believers, it also proposes four practical initiatives for Christians in the West to help these persecuted brothers and sisters. It calls us to join a new kind of jihad, leaving vengeance behind in favor of forgiveness, radical love, and unyielding prayer.

This book literally changed my life, really (I'm not being cheesy). As a Christian in America, there is no persecution. It's easy compared to other places. In some Muslim countries, if a person was found baptizing someone, he could spend six months in prison. It showed me how great I have it here in America where I can be baptized as I was or baptized people and I can read the bible freely without the government after me.
I will never look at evangelism the same. It is a war out there and we Christians, especially in America where we don't have a threat, should really be giving our all for Christ.
(The only problem as I have with this book, as well as most Christian books is that they think all churches are fine. I believe and know from the bible that the Church of Christ is the only true Church. Brother Alexander makes it seem like all churches, denominations, as long as they believe in Christ, are true. The truth is: there is only one church. Ephesians 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism. And baptism is not symbolic. Baptism is actually where your sins are forgiven (Acts 2:38) and you're saved.
But great read!
I particularly enjoyed seeing how ex-Muslim Christians can move around in a Muslim country, work, marry and have their lives. Islam does not seem to be as completely pervasive in the so-called "Islamic World" as I once thought. I was also interested to see that sometimes the most devout and loving Christians started out as hate filled members of the Muslim Brotherhood. Go figure.
I don't want to overstate it either. Many of these former Muslims pay for their new faith with the ultimate price: a bloody and violent death. But as was once said about the early church "the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the faith" so too do we find a deep vein of Muslims looking for a way out of the hatred.
This book shows that everywhere there are opportunities for Christian belief. I was particularly impressed with the ex Muslim who instead of lamenting that his passport still described him as "Muslim" sees in it rather an opportunity to go to Mecca on the hajj so he can tell people about Jesus Christ!
One gets the impression that much more of this kind of "underground" conversion is going on in the Islamic world than we were once led to believe.
I was interested by the fact that the authors state upfront they've fictionalized the lives of many people in the Islamic world, weaving their stories and personalities together to create a true-to-life picture that shelters the real subjects from harm. Secret Believers starts slowly; it takes a while to explain all this and to establish characters. Nonetheless, I found myself unable to put it down and literally finished it the day it arrived.
I had never thought much about the Christians who are born into Islamic societies. Additionally, it had not occurred to me that there would exist a major chasm between these Christians and Muslims who convert to Christianity--people whom the book terms "Muslim background believers." Because of Brother Andrew's reputation and because of stories I've heard coming from Islamic countries, I believe this book is based fully in truth, and I was deeply moved by the characters' struggles and triumphs.

It is amazing testimony of the work Jesus is doing in the lives of those who have been brought up as muslems. Wonderful though this is, there is a cost: a very high price in relationships and safety, in many cases; although there are those who also choose to follow Jesus as a result of seeing the change in other muslem background believers. Some have paid with their lives, whilst others have needed to move to live in another location or country.
As a backdrop, we can also see what Bro Andrew and his ministry is doing to help those in this work.
Of necessity, I read the book in short pieces over a protracted time, so I now want to read it again over a much shorter timespan, such that I can flow better with all the people and their lives in this great novel, which is based on real people, events, and their lives.
