Review
―Marshall Goldsmith, executive coach; author or coeditor of The Leader of the Future, Global Leadership, and Coaching for Leadership
"In this hyperactive world where our work is interrupted once every eleven minutes it’s easy to conclude that as critical as focus is, it is beyond our grasp. But with this book in hand you can get both the methods and the kick-in-the-pants you need to overcome easy excuses and make focus a competitive advantage for you and your team."
―Laurence Haughton, author, It’s Not the Big That Eat the Small . . . It’s the FAST That Eat the Slow and It’s Not What You Say . . . It’s What You Do
"Lisa Haneberg’s thoughtful book, Focus Like A Laser Beam, is important reading for managers and others looking to create value in their organization. In a time when too many priorities, messages, and issues make decision making difficult to do, this book helps the reader effectively sort through these items by focusing on what’s important in improving their organization."
―Ken Thrasher, CEO, Compli, and retired CEO and president, Fred Meyer Stores

I'd say this is definitely geared more towards management than worker bee's, but there are still a few things anyone can use. Number one being, just say "no" to meetings that don't provide any value. Other than that (which I already try to practice), I just didn't get much out of this book. I'm a little surprised by all of the glowing reviews I read here. Maybe I missed something.
1. Breakthrough knowledge and thoughts (Weight: 20%)
2. Clarity of objectives and suitability of book title(Weight: 10%)
3. Simplicity of applying the principles to daily routines (Weight: 20%)
4. Good lanaguage and ease of reading (Weight: 20%)
5. Useful tips, phrases, models, real life illustrations of discussed principles(Weight: 30%)
For this book, it scores high for all 5 categories. I am impressed with Lisa Haneberg when she chose Laser as the base that focus was compared against. She made pertinent reference to the laser's characters and this helped the readers to visualise and to retain what was read.
The more impressive and useful section of the book is the section "In the Real World". This differentiated the book from many management books where the authors discussed great academic ideas and just used one or two examples to illustrate their points. In this section, Lisa provided the readers with phrases and questions to kick start the advocated principle.
Lisa wrote the book with a flair commonly found in classical but balanced the style well with management language. She used colourful examples that strengthen the readers' undertanding and retention.
High value for money. This is another book that I will keep at my side at all times.
My actual rating is 4.5 stars but restricted by the rating scale provided by Amazon.com.
And so it is a delight to read Lisa Haneberg's "Focus Like a Laser Beam." Like a great hike on a well-marked trail, the quality of the experience is not whether anyone has been this way before, but whether you get what you need or want out of the experience.
There's a lot here to like. The writing is breezy, on-point, punctuated with examples, set-off with key points and loaded with actionable to-do's.
Furthermore, Focus Like a Laser Beam gives managers a chance to stretch beyond the stereotypical five-step advice that punctuates so many biz books. Lisa guides you into not so well worn places: encouraging intimacy with associates, having more fun at work again, relaxing as a work aid... And lots more in ten useful categories. Again, there's plenty of HOW accompanying the Should.
Is this a ground-breaker? No. And that's why I can't give it five-stars. But Focus Like a Laser Beam is a good read. It's a short, enjoyable, useful and stimulating little book -- perfect to toss into your briefcase for your next trip. (Even if that's vacation or holiday and you feel you *should* bring some business reading with you.)
