Married for 20 years to the Reverend Benjamin Lynch, a handsome, ambitious minister of the prestigious Methodist church, Dean Lynch has never quite adjusted her temperament to the demands of the role of a Sunday wife. When her husband is assigned to a larger and more demanding community in the Florida panhandle, Dean becomes fast friends with Augusta Holderfield, a woman whose good looks and extravagant habits immediately entrance her. As their friendship evolves, Augusta challenges Dean to break free from her traditional role as the preacher's wife. Just as Dean is questioning everything she has always valued, a tragedy occurs, providing the catalyst for change in ways she never could have imagined.

Cassandra King is the author of five novels, most recently the critically acclaimed Moonrise (2013), her literary homage to Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. Moonrise is a Fall 2013 Okra Pick and a Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance (SIBA) bestseller. It has been described as "her finest book to date."

Fellow Southern writers Sandra Brown, Fannie Flagg, and Dorothea Benton Frank hailed her previous novel, Queen of Broken Hearts (2008), as "wonderful," "uplifting," "absolutely fabulous," and "filled with irresistible characters." Prior to that, King's third book, The Same Sweet Girls (2005), was a #1 Booksense Selection and Booksense bestseller, a Southeastern Bookseller Association bestseller, a New York Post Required Reading selection, and a Literary Guild Book-of-the-Month Club selection.

Her first novel, Making Waves in Zion, was published in 1995 by River City Press and reissued in 2004 by Hyperion. Her second novel, The Sunday Wife (2002), was a Booksense Pick, a People Magazine Page-Turner of the Week, a Literary Guild Book-of-the-Month selection, a Books-a-Million President's Pick, a South Carolina State Readers' Circle selection, and a Salt Lake Library Readers' Choice Award nominee. In paperback, the novel was chosen by the Nestle Corporation for its campaign to promote reading groups.

King's short fiction and essays have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including Callaloo, Alabama Bound: The Stories of a State (1995), Belles' Letters: Contemporary Fiction by Alabama Women (1999), Stories From Where We Live (2002), and Stories From The Blue Moon Café (2004). Aside from writing fiction, she has taught writing on the college level, conducted corporate writing seminars, worked as a human-interest reporter for a Pelham, Alabama, weekly paper, and published an article on her second-favorite pastime, cooking, in Cooking Light magazine.

A native of L.A. (Lower Alabama), King currently lives in the Low Country of South Carolina with her husband, novelist Pat Conroy, whom she met when he wrote a blurb for Making Waves.

In The Sunday Wife, Cassandra King tackles pretty much all that makes us human: navigating the hazards of a life where you are in a position of having to deal with judgmental, nosy people and yet being required to present a certain image; dealing with a wildly unpredictable, sometimes volatile, friend yet knowing you love the friend unconditionally; trying to keep a romantic relationship together yet realizing that the “fit” is no longer there; and striving to become your authentic self while forces work against you. King’s Sunday Wife Willodean “Dean” Lynch is the wife of Pastor Ben Lynch, the leader of a prominent Methodist congregation in a small Florida town. Dean, who grew up “white trash” (something her husband never lets her forget,) is, immediately upon arrival in town, judged by the women—and some of the men in their congregation—as lacking. It is up to wealthy Augusta Holderfield to convince Dean that she is, indeed, a good person among the chaff of the church’s members. And that she is worthy of much more than her husband is giving her. But Augusta is a flawed person herself, and Dean must love her while tolerating her wild plans, her outbursts, and her secrets. And as the friendship progresses, Dean develops her own sense of who she is and what she deserves in life. The Sunday Wife is a magnificent work. It is full of high drama, intriguing characters, with lots of laughs peppered in. I acquired the book after reading an interview of King and her illustrious husband Pat Conroy, the famous and cherished Southern writer. I am so glad I discovered her (as I’m sure Conroy is, but not necessarily for her writing in his case; anyone who can write this sensitively must make a wonderful life partner.) I loved The Sunday Wife. Unlike many books I’ve read lately, I was sad when I had to put it down and eager to find time to pick it up again to continue on Dean’s journey. And so much did I love the book and King’s writing, before I finished it, I ordered another of her works. I may read several or all of a writer’s works, but rarely do I read the works back to back.

As a preacher, I know the life of a preacher's wife is a tough one. The blurb on this novel was a good one and made me want to see what it was about. Once I got into it, I just kept on going. While predictable in spots, overall it was an enjoyable. Had a few surprises and a good ending. I think anyone would enjoy it.

What a great read! Dean is the woman who is at a crossroads in her life. Married to a minister for 20 years, she has catered to his every whim. Because he did not want children, she gave herself to serving him and the churches he pastored. Her life is a sham: she dresses to please the church members--even in their old hand-me-down clothes; furnishes her home in a way to appeal to her husband and his church members; cooks what he wants; attends all of the meetings in the church and socializes with only those approved by her husband and the members of the church. His goal is to become a bishop and he programs her to be his helpmate in achieving that goal. In a new community, Dean meets a young woman who is very wealthy, beautiful, married to a wonderful man, with an adorable son. While the two of them are opposites, they are attracted and become friends. Through this new friend, Dean meets all kinds of new people and has all kinds of new experiences outside the realm of the church and her husband who is not approving of Dean's new shenanigans. Therein lies the plot. King takes the reader from the doldrums of Dean's pastor's wife life to the pinnacles of the wealthy young and indulged, and plunges back into the depths of life. The give and take of the life of this woman is absolutely amazing. She is a real person living in a facade of a life. You have to read this book. My sister-in-law recommended it and I could not put it down. I recommend it to you.

Cassandra King-Conroy’s book hooked me immediately. Her characters were compelling, quirky and well drawn, Dean, the protagonist was very real and believable. I enjoyed the setting in the small southern town where everyone knew everybody and couldn’t stay out of each other’s business. Dean goes from being a submissive preacher’s wife to finding herself and pursuing her dream. I loved this book, it held me captive from beginning to end. I’m going to read the rest of this author’s books.

Finding ourselves can take a lifetime…and then becoming the person we want to be takes perspective on that which we aspire to…good southern tale of small town religion mixed with small minded characters and the main characters who are searching for themselves …

I think it's interesting that the only scalding critiques of this book focus on its unbelievability rather than the writing itself. I've lived in a lovely, conservative town for about a decade (conservative meaning overwhelming Republican, Baptist, and dry--no alcohol sales), and during that time period, a beloved physician in one of the largest protestant churches committed suicide because of allegations of pedophilia and a minister was driven out of his congregation because of similar charges--that perhaps stemmed from his willingness to focus on the poor, not his wealthy parishioners. A protestant priest committed suicide because of alcholism and bipolar disorder that he could neither admit nor control. All three men were charasmatic and did much good, along with causing much despair.
It is readers like the last handful who make the pious congregants and Dean's insufferable husband all the MORE believable. They don't want to see anything that interferes with their Noman Rockwell view of the world, and, perhaps, contribute to a great deal of pain that some churches cause and the difficulty of following Jesus, in church or outside it, rather than flawed human beings like ourselves. It's good that some writers have the courage to write, not like the sweet and remarkable Jan Karon, about the warm and loving churches, but about the dark side of hypocrisy as well.
