In 1922, an early association of film publicists known as the Western Associated Motion Picture Advertisers (Wampas) hit upon a strategy to call attention to their organization and their industry. The group selected 13 young actresses with potential star power and promoted them heavily as "Baby" (meaning junior) Stars. Nearly 150 actresses were chosen during the program's existence, 1922-1934. To be selected a Wampas Baby Star soon became a much-sought honor in those days before the Academy Awards. While a few Baby Stars (Ginger Rogers, Joan Crawford) went on to superstardom and others enjoyed modest success, some failed to shine.

This book offers full biographical and career details on every actress selected as a Wampas Baby Star, with a list of the films in which she appeared.

Great resource book!

I have long been fascinated by the "WAMPAS BABY STARS," as some led tragic lives, and some became stars. Some simply faded into obscurity, never making much of a mark on the film world.
WAMPAS stands for Western Association of Motion Picture Advertising and Sales. Before the heyday of the studio system, the association would choose a group of up and coming actresses as their predicted "stars of tomorrow." Most of the names will escape those not familiar with silent cinema, but others , like Clara Bow, are easily recognized. One of the later collections of WAMPAS babies included Ginger Rogers.
This is a great year by year accounting of the hopeful young stars of tomorrow, and how their lives turned out. A treasure for any movie buff!

Roy Liebman has written short biographical pieces on the actresses selected by the Western Associated Motion Picture Advertosers in Hollywood to introduce the public to its new, junior stars. Although many were already well known by the time of their selection, others were still unknown and only made a few "shorts" or features. Joan Crawford, Joan Blondell, Loretta Young, Gloria Stuart and Ginger Rogers were the "babies" who went on to major success while Lucille Rickson, Adamae Vaughn, Toshia Moria and Iris Stuart had brief careers and are now forgotten. A little disappointed there weren't more pictures of the ladies featured.

Being interested in the life of Clara Bow and recently finishing reading a great book on her life, l found that she was once a WAMPAS Baby and was curious to wonder what they were. After surfing the net, on which there wasn't much information at all, l checked out my old fried Amazon.com.
Lo and behold there was a book on the subject that l was interested in.
While this book has a wealth of information in it there was a bad lack of photographs that drags the book down. Maybe the author couldn't find a lot more but surfing E-Bay for a couple of hours, l found a photo for at least half the 130 girls that held this title.
If you have heard of the WAMPAS name before and want to know more, this is the book to get for information ONLY and not just for photos, then this is the book for you.

Roy Liebman, whose superb reference THE VITAPHONE FILMS, has produced an important contribution to film history once again with THE WAMPAS BABY STARS. Chronicling the year-by-year event whereby the Western Associated Motion Picture Advertisers (WAMPAS) attracted attention to their industry between 1922 and 1934 by selecting 13 starlets with potential star power, the public came to expect interesting new faces on the silver screen.

In his book THE WAMPAS BABY STARS, author Liebman gives a brief biography and film listing of each of the some 150 starlets selected during this period (with the frustrating exception of 1930, a prolific year of sound musical films). A few of these promising hopefuls became actual stars, such as Ginger Rogers, Loretta Young, and Joan Crawford. But for many, their names are now sadly forgotten. There are included many film favorites however, from Mary Astor and Joan Blondell to Lupe Velez and Fay Wray. The brief biographical information given by the author shed little light on the actual lives of these women. And their career chronologies are as well brief.

Still the book is a lovely homage to this lost Hollywood tradition (it was later revived in the late 1950s and 1960s as “The Hollywood Deb Stars”).

THE WAMPAS BABY STARS is a valuable addition to any film lover’s library.

As a longtime researcher of the Wampas phenomenon - the yearly selection of worthy would-be starlets 1922-1934 - I was actually prepared to dislike this book by Roy Liebman. To my great surprise, I truly enjoyed it instead. Cramming a somewhat slim volume with facts of all the selected "babies" - from Joan Crawford to Maryon Aye - Liebman seems to have left no stone unturned. Naturally, you will not learn everything you want to know about, say, Clara Bow or Ginger Rogers, but The Wampas Baby Stars is a very handy first step. And you will not find fact and filmographies of Helen Cohan or Flora Bramley anywhere else. As an added threat, Mr. Liebman also discusses the wannabe Wampas selections of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. All highly entertaining and well illustrated.
