A handsome recluse, plagued by indecision and hypochondria, Kafka nonetheless exhibited an extraordinary strength. He developed the uncanny ability to observe himself with cool objectivity, and he cultivated this ability in his writing, where it appeared in increasingly original metaphorical form. His works became among the greatest of the twentieth century, and his influence permeated far and wide, transcending literature. His descriptions of his attempts to escape from a self-made tyranny are his great works of art. Kafka in 90 Minutes also includes selections from Kafka's writings, a list of his chief works in English translation, a chronology of Kafka's life and times, and recommended reading for those who wish to delve deeper.

Of course one Kan't learn all there is to know of Kant in 90 minutes. What Strathern attempts to do in these books is give a brief overview of the life, times, and major ideas of the great philosophers. This is merely a primer, an orientation of sorts. Strathern's writing is clear and pleasant to read and the audiobook versions of all these 90 minute texts are excellent. I highly recommend.

So, what are you doing for the next 90 minutes !?
Well, if you were Kant and it was 3pm you would be out for a walk. But, you are not Kant!
So, why not read this crisp, piety-clearing, psych-insightful, entertaining portrait? Rarely will you find such an academically freeing and stimulating 90 minutes. (Especially assuming that you may have been numbed by Kant in the past.)
And, cheaper than most of the multiplexes!

Nice overview of life, education and Kant’s works, but could have benefited by clearer description of his philosophy as in Durant’s History of Philosophy. Worthwhile purchase if don’t want to peruse Stanford or Internet philosophy sources.

Strathern is a master at this kind of work, which mixes biography, critical analysis, historical context and humor all in a concise, informative & entertaining package. He lists a time line for the philosopher, his place in world/philosophic history & a selection of works for furthur reading. This series of books by Strathern is a wonderful course in Philosophy 101 without ever having to go to college, all presented in plain, easy to understand English without being bogged down with philosophy's often confusing vernacular. If you are expecting an in-depth review or complete analysis of the philosopher's life & work, read another book. This is meant to be a quick, concise overview & that's just what it provides. There's suggested readings listed in the back for people who want to investigate Kant's life & works more thoroughly.

It is impossible to summarize Kant's work in 90 minutes, yet Strathern has managed to do it. It is painful to read Kant in the original or in English translation. Strathern has saved us from this pain by neatly summarizing Kant's work in a format that can be digested easily and quickly. The biographical information he gives brings Kant, the man, to life. He is able to put the main points of Kant's thought into language that a nonprofessional can understand. Thus, he has done us a great service.

My mother bought this an incredibly long time ago when this was her account. Works fine, I guess. Can't really go wrong.

I found Strathern delightful fun to read. Personally, I liked his opinionated approach as it was easy to tell where his bias lie. It's certainly true this deals more with the life of the philosophers than their work; I do think we can say Strathern shirked some of the more difficult philosophical condescension work which we would expect of such a title.

On the other hand, as a tool for motivating you to learn more, it was excellent. I like his turn of phrase and I found it extremely fun.

This book presents, in a superficial, but on balance, entertaining fashion, a biographical sketch of Kant, with a focus on some of his "central" philosophical points. In this regard, he discusses the concept of "synthetic a priori", the "categories" and the "categorical imperative".

The quotes from Kant's work are not out of place, and I did not find the author's "point of view" (adopted presumably to assist in entertaining) to be offensive. The book is unpretentious, and seems to be effective in its limited goals. Prof. Strathern is a perceptive and clever author.

Kant provided an anchor at a particular time for the philosophical possibility of metaphysics. His thoughts matured over many years of dedication to his writing, and he wrote his seminal books over a relatively short period of time. The result is that they are difficult to penetrate.

His work was a response to Hume's work, and to a certain extent, an elaboration of Newtonian ideas. He set a benchmark for attack by philosophers of the future. His influence on philosophy has been profound. This makes his work of great historical interest. Prof. Strathern communicates this, and more.

I gave the book two stars instead of three in that I thought that, for the price, the book was a little too superficial. For example, Prof. Warburton in "A Little History of Philosophy", covers nearly the same intellectual content, but in this case, one is dealing with a book that discusses numerous interesting philosophical topics, not just a few about Kant's work. Another point, not in the book's favor, is that the index is somewhat useless for locating the important philosophical ideas.
