I have read books 1-15 now and I am very happy with this series. It is like you are there with them in the past. The Author's knowledge of this time period and sailing is amazing. Good Luck BP

This author was a phenomenal writer. Research 5 stars, ability to craft a story 5 stars. Overall 10 stars (I know 5 is the limit)

Not everyone will want to try to get through the first book because O'Brian used language from the period he wrote about. But once you get into the relationship Aubrey and Maturin have and their travels around the world you will be hooked. I have read the series twice and I'm halfway through the third with a couple of years in between.

A very good story line in this edition. The south seas, strip to Australia, and a very good twist involving a female convict. The book read easily and quickly. Well done.

I hope Jane Austen would be delighted at Patrick O'Brian's brilliant work on the perils of male female realtionships especially in a patriarchal world. This is a great opportunity for men look in the mirror and for all of us to consider the stories we tell ourselves, the standards to witch we hold ourselves and others. In the UK this book is called Clarissa Oakes. And that indeed is a primary focus, her impact on a ship full of sailors and privateers on a long journey. A fantastic read.

If I could give ten stars I would. Another excellently and expertly told tale by the supreme master of seagoing tales.

It is great to see the adventure and friendship of Aubrey and Maturtin continued. O’Brian’s command of the language and nautical matters is wonderful.

With every book in this series I regret that I am closer to the end of it. Don’t know what I will do once I have no more O’Brian’s to read. This was another good one. The main “action “ at the end, but the rest of the story was fun to read as well.

This 15th of the Aubrey-Maturin books is a delight to read. Different from many of the previous books with the focus almost entirely about at sea life. Indeed it is probably the book which travels the least distance, but the rich vein of the characters lives and relationships makes this as exciting and engaging a read as any of the previous books.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Truelove!

Read this book in 2009, and its the 15th amazing volume of the wonderful "Aubrey/Maturin" series.

In this tale Captain Jack Aubrey, RN, and his crew on board ship "Surprise" are setting sail towards the Sandwich Islands to help a British whaler who has been captured by thew chief on those Islands at French instigation.

Not knowing at first, but later on they will find an escaped female convict and now stowaway in the cable-tier, and her name is Clarissa Harvill.

Clarissa will not speak of her past to Aubrey and any other of his crew, but it will be Dr. Stephen Maturin, ship's Surgeon and spy who will make Clarissa reveal her dangerous secrets.

Maturin will not only unravel Clarissa's crime, passions, but most importantly her information about a highly placed English spy in the pay of Napoleon Bonaparte's intelligence service.

What is to follow is a terrific seafaring tale, and also the exposure of the English spy due to the cunning and determination by Maturin, and all this is brought to us in his own authentic and masterful way by the author.

Highly recommended, for this is another splendid addition to this great series, and that's why I like to call this episode: "A Magnificent Truelove"!
