BKV's Runaways is an excellent read.

Complex characters who grow, distinct personalities and motivations, distinct visual style.

While Immonen and Pichelli are skilled creators, they dropped the ball on this.

There is no actual story here.

It's an attempt at a bottle episode of a TV show that meanders and weaves and doesn't actually have an ending.

The characters feel familiar if a little off, but Pichelli's art style strips away some of the distinctive characteristics of each character.

There's worse Runaways out there, but BKVs is the gold standard.

Amazing story!

When I first started reading Runaways I was hooked. I loved the plot line, the characters, the art work, everything about it.
But I DO NOT like this book.
Maybe it's because I missed a few books (like two) but the plot line isn't good and it doesn't make any since to me. When the series first started I liked the way they acted, kids forced to grow up in a nanosecond and face the harsh realities of life, but now the way they act just makes me shake my head and go "Really?" Plus I don't like the artwork, they look younger than they did in the first book, they look like a bunch of red snot nosed cry babies.
I wouldn't recommend buying this book.

I recently read the entire Runaways saga so the journey of these characters was very new and enjoyable for me. I cannot recommend highly enough BKV's work done on this book as it is emotionally poignant as well as perfectly structured. With his departure, Joss Whedon was able to maintain this energy though I felt some of the smaller character moments did not come through as much.

However I would highly recommend stopping at the end of Whedon's run. Moore never seemed to find a good grip on the characters and the storylines were unfocused and lacking in character motivation for why events transpired in the way they did. With this said, I did not believe this once great title could be taken any lower. I was proven wrong with this concluding story arc.

The story begins with a pointless Prom night celebration that felt almost insulting to these characters who have moved beyond the cliches of teenage drama and have matured into a presence of their own. The motivation for such a openning was completely unexplained and was entirely out of character. The developments in this story are entirely unnecessary, and actually appear to squander many potential story possibilities. It appears that it is attempting to establish a new status quo, but the process for arriving there is confusing and difficult to follow.

I hate to knock the writer Kathyrn Immonen because I have heard her Heralds story is quite good, but the flaws with this story are entirely to blame from the incoherent, confusing mess this story becomes. Sara Pichelli's art is actually quite good, extremely better than Ramos who had been previously on the title, but as I care more about story this aspect of the book is not enough to make me raise my rating.

I wanted to write on this review as this storyline soured my experience with the Runaways title and made me truly miss the phenomenal writing of BKV. In my opinion you would be best advised to believe that the Runaways stories ended when BKV left.
