Featuring a fraction of both teams (X-men & SHIELD) the book was like a super-hero movie minus the bad story. If they took this book and made a movie `page-for-frame', it would be a bigger hit than `Spider-Man' by Sam Raimi (& I'm a die hard Spidey -fan for over 20 years!!)
Here's my 'non-spoiler' blurb: `Two sets of heroes racing from two sides to the middle where its one set of HEROES who come out "defeated" instead of the conventional bad guy'. More? You don't have a full SHIELD or X-Men team. Characters seem a little different from what they have appeared in the series till now Cap & Fury are partially sidelined but the Falcon makes you forget this and makes for excellent reading.
Icing on cake? The story telling & unconventional views! Especially Wolverine's argument with Jean towards the end that casts doubt on any other `God-level'-powered super hero and shakes the mastermind image of Charles Xavier. Proof for `Brains better than brawn OR super-powers/ Mutant Gene'.... Not doubts after this book that Tech, super-powers & funding in the world means SQUAT unless you have a brain that makes it work together.
Two complaints- The ending was/is an UNBEARABLE TEASE (Book 2 not released yet!). And How many "Levels of Secrecy" does Marvel plan to invent for SHIELD?
Don't hate my unrevealing review; you will thank me when you finish the book. Translation: BUY THIS BOOK ASAP!
"Nightmare" gives us the best of what we've become used to in the Ultimate universe - gritty, realistic characterizations, and compelling, suspenseful storylines - while touching on territory that is so far unexplored in this imprint... the coming of Galactus. It also gives a weight and a mystery to Galactus (or Gah Lak Tus, in this incarnation) that was not present in it's original incarnation.
The book itself is very suspenseful and reads like a horror story, and is compelling enough to hook even someone uninitiated to these characters at all. Best of all, at the end, the reader is left wanting more, and looking forward to the next two installments in this series.
