Along with Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Millar has been one of the key writers for Marvel Comics in the 21st century. After proving himself in the ’90s as a talent to watch while writing for DC Comics and the UK comic 2000AD, his arrival to Marvel came at a time when Ultimate Spider-Man had just shot up the sales charts. It was in this environment that Millar made his first major contribution to Marvel with Ultimate X-Men, as Millar integrated forty years’ worth of X-Men history, characters and lore into a solid two-year run, making the companion title to Ultimate Spider-Man every bit the creative and commercial success. Next up was The Ultimates, a new rendering of the Avengers that was to continue building on the success of the Ultimate line. He and artist Bryan Hitch pulled it all off in spades: The Ultimates and its sequel, Ultimates 2, were ensconced at the top of the sales charts every month; what’s more, they were critical successes, as well. Meanwhile, Millar was invited to enter the regular Marvel Universe to take a stab at two of its most iconic characters: Spider-Man and Wolverine. Paired with industry heavyweights to draw his stories — Terry Dodson on Marvel Knights Spider-Man and John Romita Jr. on Wolverine — Millar brought the same fast-paced and cleverly constructed plots with which his Ultimate fans were already familiar. Amid building a small library of Millarworld indie comic books — including the titles Chosen and Wanted, the latter of which was turned into a Hollywood blockbuster starring Angelina Jolie — he managed to write Civil War, the epic seven-issue miniseries that definitively reshaped the landscape of Marvel’s heroes. Kick-A**, a Marvel Icon project done in tandem with John Romita Jr., made an impressive impact on the sales chart before also being adapted for a major motion picture. In addition, Millar has reunited with Civil War artist Steve McNiven in both the pages of Wolverine and their creator-owned book Nemesis.

Ultimate X-Men volume 6 Return of the King collects Ultimate X-Men issues 26-33 and is the end of Mark Millar’s run on the Ultimate X-Men line. It is a bittersweet but fulfilling finale to the run, but sadly, the Ultimate X-Men line doesn’t fare too well going forward. The story picks up immediately after the events of Ultimate War with the X-Men on the run and Magneto and his Brotherhood waging war on humanity. Magneto’s messiah complex is fully unleashed as he is collecting two of every animal on Earth and preserving artwork that he deems is crucial for historical purposes once he destroys the Earth by reversing Earth’s magnetic poles (thanks to a mutant amplification machine created by the mutant Forge). Millar still balances politics in the book as Guantanamo Bay is a mutant internment camp and there’s plenty of scenes with General Nick Fury and President Bush and Dick Cheney and other members of the Bush administration discussing the political repercussions of these events. The X-Men are scattered throughout most of the story. Scott was betrayed and left to die in the Savage Land by Wolverine who sought to use this moment to court Jean Grey. Jean and the remaining students are on the run from the government and Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X is interred in Guantanamo Bay. But they all converge and come back together for a satisfying finale. Overall, Millar’s finale is a fantastic end for his run. He juggles absurdity, wonderful artwork by David Finch and Adam Kubert, and character driven story arcs to a satisfying conclusion that leaves the series open and primed for a new writer and new direction.

I have never really liked comics with capes and cowls. A friend got me back into reading them when I was reading her copies of the civil war. I heard about the "ultimate" line and was intrigued. This may be a bit to gritty or faux-realistic for some folks, but I dig it. The only thing I didn't like was that Galactus (in another series) was made into a bunch of space bugs. What's that about? I want the huge stocky guy with the funny hat.

Although not "The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" this arc lives up to the name of the Ultimate X-Men! Xavier is in SHIELD custody at Camp X-Factor in Cuba, and Magneto has a large plan to wipe out the human race and make Earth a haven for mutants. Get this: A flying citadel that carries a cerebro-like device that can augment Magneto's powers tenfold, and he plans to use it to reverse the Earth's magnetic poles and wipe out humanity! Just the kind of plan you'd expect from Magneto! And no one can stop him except for the X-Men!

What I really loved about this volume was the battle between the X-Men and Magneto, how the X-Men must hide from the government, the fact that Wolverine left Cyclops to die in the Savage Land to get Jean Grey for himself (see Vol. 4), the backstory of Xavier's and Magneto's fallout and their conversation in Magneto's plastic prison cell, and especially the artwork by David Finch! Next to Ron Garney, David Finch is the best modern Marvel Comics artist!

If you are a true Ultimate X-Men, or even Ultimate Marvel fan, definitely add this volume to your collection! You'll be sorry if you don't!

Of everything i've ever read on Ultimate X-Men, this by far is his best work. Millar, Finch and Kubert work well together. Millar's story is great and i wont reveal any spoilers but to help you out, you need to read the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th arc to fullly understand this. Finch and Kubert are 2 of my favorite artists and having them together is the best. Finch 26-28, 30 and Kubert 27-29, 31-33.

This TP collection contains the finest story arc yet for The Ultimate X-Men. Magneto is loose. The Ultimates want him after he has massacred hundreds of innocents in bridge collapse, and they figure the best way to get him is through The X-Men. Meanwhile, romantic jealousies lead to tragedy and betrayal as the Wolverine, Scott Summers , Jean Grey triangle goes over the boiling point. This series coincided with The Ultimate War, which you should read as well. Heck, read The Ultimates so you understand what this is all about. Great art, breathtaking plot twists and the great dialogue that only Mark Millar can provide. Don't miss this collection!

I enjoyed this volume greatly! This picks up from the very badly drawn volume five, the X-Men are recovering from their attack from the Ultimates, and Professor X is still held captive. Many things are revealed in this volume...and the action is extraordinary! I was a bit disappointed that the cover isn't how it's viewed on this page (of course it has Wolverine on the front; but that pic wtih Magneto rocks), but I got over it. Buy your copy today!!!
