The Horse Companion: A Comprehensive Guide to the World of Horses, Including All You Need to Know About Riding Skills, Equipment, Healthcare, Grooming, and Diet Hardcover – January 1, 1997

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 3 ratings

A fascinating opening section tells the history of the horse and how modern breeds evolved. With words and handsome pictures, a following chapter tells the story of the working horse, with emphasis on army horses, draft and pack horses, police horses, horses on ranches, and horses bred for racing and dressage competition. A thirty page directory identifies and describes the 50 most common horse breeds, and succeeding sections on horse anatomy and the equine life cycle are supplemented with detailed illustrations. The remaining chapters focus on practical details for horse owners--stabling and general care, recognizing and dealing with health and injury problems, understanding horse behavior, learning how to choose and buy a horse, purchasingthe correct equipment for riding, and developing the skills that transform a beginner into a competent rider. Extra eye-catching features show pictures of famous horses in art, film, and literature, characteristic horse markings, and descriptions of famous stud horses. And for readers interested in knowing what it is really like working with horses, there are fascinating personal accounts of typical days in the lives of jockeys, veterinarians, and others whose lives are focused around horses. There is an extensive glossary, an index, and more than 400 full-color photos and drawings.

I would rate this book at 100 stars, if that were possible. There is nothing you don't learn about horses in this book. It is a great guide to use when you are inexperienced around horses. It helps you learn so much about them. There is a great guide to all of the breeds of horses in this book. Anyone who rides, shows, or just loves horses should own The Horse Companion. This is one of the best books about horses I have ever read. Anyone who has a love for horses should read The Horse Companion.

I bought this book probably 5 or 6 months ago, when we were just considering getting a horse. after reading it, i came away really excited about buying our first "baby." it covers everything from history to riding basics. This book probably tripled my knowledge of horses. its beautifully illustrated. very easy to read, especially great for somebody starting out, yet helpful for experienced horse people too. We have 2 horses now, and i find myself back in this book at least twice a week reviewing different areas...the farrier is coming, what should i expect? what did they say about loading? what's that funky looking brush for? its simply great!
