The author claims to take "a bold approach to learning what I call elemental Spanish--forget all (or most) the rules of grammar, linguistics, spelling and syntax" and focus on "basic conversational Spanish through incorporating a blend of English and Spanish" (p. ix), or Spanglish. In other words, you won't learn any grammar, nor will you learn any conversational Spanish either. The only thing in this textbook that you might find somewhat useful is long vocabulary lists--but I would suggest buying a dictionary instead.
A brief overview of the textbook: Each lesson starts with a list of vocabulary, followed by several pages of plain text in English (in a lecture format), and then several discussion questions, and a list of references and readings at the end. There are basically no exercises or activities aimed at practicing the language. The only chapter that talks about any grammar or language-related topics is Chapter 4; in fact, it’s a 12-page summary of the Spanish language packed with very brief information about vowels, nouns, articles, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs (only present tense), prepositions, conjunctions, and accents/pronunciation (but, again, no activities to practice any of these). Later chapters are packed with lists of medical vocabulary and expressions, and occasionally one or two short exercises here and there (there are a total of 11 short exercises in the whole book, which is 150 pages long).
To sum it up, the author--who, by the way, is a lawyer and a physical therapist--apparently has very little, if any, idea about language pedagogy and the process of second language acquisition. I would not recommend this book even if it were given away for free.
