From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3—Everyone laughs at Jane for wanting to be a knight, except the court jester, who loans her his small suit of armor, and she spends her days practicing knightly duties. When a dragon steals the prince, Jane sets out to rescue him. After a long, wearisome battle, they sit down and talk about what's expected of dragons (stealing the prince) and knights (being men). In the end, she turns an enemy into a friend, returns the prince to his parents, becomes a proper knight with Saturdays off to visit a friend, and dances with the jester at the royal ball. Bathed in a golden light, the whimsical illustrations for this original fairy tale cast a golden glow on Jane's aspirations and adventures. The watery blues and lavenders in the second book are equally fitting and as amusing, as the child and the dragon search for the king's magician, banished from the court because he cannot do a rain spell. Unfortunately, the magician discovers that the missing ingredient is anger, nearly destroying a farming community and Jane's dragon. When the creature is struck by blue lightning and falls into the water below, the youngster saves him and shows the repentant sorcerer that being sorry is only the beginning. Baynton reverses the traditional role of girls in fairy tales and redeems their adversaries. These kindly stories, also an animated TV series, are solid choices.—Mary Jean Smith, Southside Elementary School, Lebanon, TN

I have bought 4 of these books for all of my Granddaughters and a little friend. Every little girl should have this book. Princesses should be able to do strong important things too! I don't want my girls to have to wait for a prince to solve their problems. They need to grow up strong and resilient and that is what this story is about. My oldest granddaughters love the story and ask for it at bedtime often. One loved it so much we had to find her a stuffed dragon.

I read this book to both my sons and my daughter numerous times when they were young and they all loved it. It taught my sons to never underestimate a girl and it taught my daughter that she could do whatever she set out to do.
Instead of all of the knights being male, this little girl secretly practiced to be a knight, too. One day, when the rest of the knights were away at a tournament, the prince is taken captive by a dragon. Jane jumps to the rescue and, instead of killing the dragon (that would be expected of her!), she befriends it. And instead of the dragon killing her (that would be expected of a dragon), it confesses it just wants to be loved.

I'm a 25 year old adult with two small boys. I personally love the Jane and the Dragon books and cartoon. It's refreshing to see a friendly dragon with a distinct personality, rather than one who is just a nasty monster. Jane knows what she wants out of life and works hard to achieve it. The illustrations are unique and lovely. It's a very cute story that anyone (young, old, boy, girl) will love... I know I do. ^_^

My two and a half year old does not watch much TV but she loves Jane and the Dragon on Saturdays (she also likes Jacob Two Two and we have ordered those books as well). She was very excited when she saw the books as well. In a time when TV execs could not allow Dora to be on top (by giving Diego his own show) it is nice to have a female lead that is strong and brave but also sometimes makes mistakes and learns from them.

The stories are interesting enough for older kids too.

Like everyone else, I watched the show before I read the book. I was expecting it to be a junior novella or at least a chapter book 60 to 70 pages long not a short 24 pages. I enjoyed how Jane and her best friend Dragon first met. And for those of you who also expected more; buy all three books at once. 😑😥😁😀😊😉😉😉

I was most pleased that I could actually get the book for my daughter. "Jane" was one of my daughter's most favorite books as a young girl.
She mentioned that she would love to have her "old" copy of the book. I coudn't find it in her room so I contacted Amazon. Thank you so much for locating available used copies of the book for me. The book was very special to my daughter - (her name is Leah JANE) it is a very positive, empowering book for a young girl to read.

Bought to give to friends child. I love the story, especially for little girls. Very impressionable for little girls to be independent and not the old storybooks of girls waiting for the prince on the white horse to save and protect. Not good to plant that seed.

LOVELY story about a little girl called Jane who is the daughter of the lady in waiting to the queen.. who is expected to grow up and do the same. But Jane has a secret desire to be a knight although is ridiculed for her dream by the knights. Jane is given a suit of armour by the court jester that fits her and practises hard. Then one day, when all the knights are away at a tournament, a dragon comes and steals the prince. Jane fights the dragon and twice could have killed him and 'twice the dragon could have toasted Jane with his hot breath'. When they collapse, exhausted, Jane asked him why he didn't . He replied that he didn't like killing people but it was expected of him.. Jane tells him he shouldn't just do what's expected of him and he replies that it's easy for her to say that... a brave knight... whereupon Jane takes her helmet off to show him she's a girl. So they become the best of friends. Jane returns the prince to the palace and when Jane's mother realises what her daughter has done, she 'swoons gracefully!' (love that line!). Jane becomes a knight with every other Saturday off to visit her new friend! LOVE this story... Great for children to understand that they can do the unexpected and can follow their hearts desires to become all that they are intended to be.. not just what's expected of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Traumhafte Geschichte über ein starkes Mädchen
Reviewed in Germany on February 19, 2014

Kaufempfehlung!!!

Good story line as it shows children they can be anything they wish (within reason of course) I use it with my year one class and the boys like it as much as the girls. Great starting point for literacy.
