Utterly compelling!
Barbara Ann Kipfer has elevated the list to high art and bestselling pleasure. A foremost expert of classification, in
The Order of Things, she does for life what her previous books do for happiness and wisdom―organize it in a way that is brilliantly conceived.
The
The Order of Things is practical, entertaining, eclectic, and impossible to put down. Beginning with Earth―Smog Alert States, Rain Forest Layers, Coal Sizes― and ending with General Knowledge and Philosophy (the I Ching's 64 "chapters," Ludwig Wittgenstein's four-step Method of Overcoming Puzzlement), it is a 14-chapter taxonomy of the world as we know it:

• The Seven Hills of Rome, the Seven Deadly Sins, the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Seven Dwarfs―check.
• The belt degrees of karate and judo, weight classes of professional and amateur boxing, flower names of the golf holes at Augusta―check.
• The hierarchy of the FBI, publication order of Shakespeare's plays, cuts of beef, Freud's divisions of the human psyche, order of rank in world armies and navies, Jupiter's satellites, ships' bells, traditional and modern wine measures, blood-pressure levels, fastest animals―check.

A completely indispensable reference―check.

My Sister gave me a copy right after it was published, and it soon became the favorite reference book in my library. It settled bets, informed me, and has information, a person has no idea they need to know. My sister had twins. a boy and a girl. They are middle aged adults now. She passed away twenty years ago, and I wanted to give the twins something their mother had picked out herself. I know.. how do you give away something so essential. My solution was to find another first edition to replace it and give the twins the original.
Introducing the HERO of this epic, Demiurge Books, who supplied a wonderful first edition, in great, like new condition, at a great price. This book was carefully wrapped and packaged like it had value, without knowing it had great value to me.
Thank You,
Kevin.

This book is so cool!!! So many things seem very inconsequential, but this book gives you a great starting point to look into things on a grander scale, and understand the shapes, forms and algorythmic patterns of whatever it is that we may seek the order of.

The Order of Things: Hierarchies, Structures, and Pecking Orders  - this book is organized by topic (The Earth, The Natural World, The Arts, Sports and Recreation, to name a few) and an Index is provided.

This book provides a serendipitous reference for browsing. There is a LOT of material covered in this book, but it is NOT an encyclopedia. The author has provided an admirable compilation of lists on a huge variety of topics as organized in the Table of Contents, and as such makes this book a welcome reference source for thousands of hard-to-find facts.

Use this book as a reference while enjoying its contents. I do.

Small facts, many lists. Fun to read. There are many errors though: some blatant omissions (lists head-of-states of many nations/empires but some obvious countries absent), lists that appear just in this book (try googling some of the more obscure ones), lists that are superficial and could be more complete in the same space allotted. Would benefit by citing sources. Waiting for a revision.

I had forgotten that I order 2 copies - one as a gift to be sent to my nephew and one for me. I received my copy and thought Amazon had messed up the order - but no. Amazon had wrapped and delivered the gift book on time to my nephew who is delighted and I want to set the record straight and apologize to Amazon who have never failed me! Thank you Amazon and I am sorry I jumped to conclusions!

This book is awesome! There are more facts and information in this little book than I've seen in any other published book. It's fun to look through and learn things I hadn't considered. A great gift for someone who loves to learn or likes to know facts.

This is a delightful book. I have given it as a Christmas present for a couple of persons who would do well on Jeopardy. This book lists everything, is a fascinating read and might substitute for a Google search in a pinch. I keep one on my library shelf in my office and have used it quickly more than once to answer a question.

This book is smaller than you think, about the size of average grown man's hand, But packed full of information. It's like a tactile google. It was bought for myself, but now my boys, 9y and 8y, won't let it go!

A small but, impressive list of things. It is cute book to build your knowledge on.
