Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In Deveraux's familiar latest, Jace Montgomery's fiancée, Stacy, commits suicide while they're vacationing in England—or so, three years after her death, everybody but Jace believes. The chance discovery of a letter Stacy received days before she died and a photo of Priory House in Margate, England—the village where Stacy committed suicide—prompt Jace to investigate. Finding Priory House for sale, Jace buys it despite its ugliness and expense. Dwelling in the house is the ghost of young Ann Stuart, who lived there in the 1870s and committed suicide just before her wedding. A local journalist, the beautiful and confrontational Nightingale Smythe, joins man and spirit in the search for the truth about Stacy and Ann's deaths. Deveraux never raises the pitch very high, and harmonizes the whole satisfactorily. (July)

From Booklist

Three years after wealthy Jace Montgomery's fiancée, Stacy, committed suicide, he discovers a postcard of Priory House, a British estate, with an enigmatic love note. Although Stacy's family blamed Jace, saying she wanted to end the engagement, he knows their love was mutual, and has never believed it was suicide. Certain that Priory House holds the key, he buys the estate. He detests the rambling house on sight; however, he is intrigued by the Victorian ghost of Ann Stuart because, like Stacy, she supposedly committed suicide before her wedding to escape from marrying her intended groom. Jace knows that if he can untangle Ann's mystery, he can find out what really happened to Stacy. He gets help from his beautiful next-door neighbor, Nigh Smythe, a war correspondent on leave after a tragedy. Deveraux's wonderful addition to her romances about the Montgomery family will satisfy old fans and entice new ones. Engelmann, Patty

I'm not a fan of ghosts (obviously supernatural is way beyond scary for me!), or stories about them, but I am a fan of Jude Deveraux's writing, so a little haunting caused barely a hiccup! Loved the novel from beginning to the end. Know you will, too.

As much as I enjoyed this book ,I still felt bad for Stacey. But I was also happy for And and Danny.

I was hooked from the beginning. I didn't give it 5 stars because the ending wasn't all that great so I was a little disappointed but all on all it was a pretty good read.

I am so in love with the Montgomery-Taggert clan. I have yet to read one of Jude Deveraux's books based on them that I don't love. This story really stole my heart. I fell in love with Jace immediately and wanted him to come out of this in love. This book will not disappoint you. I have read the entire series now as well as almost all of Jude Deveraux's other books. I could not put this book down. The story has a bit of a science fiction twist to it which is a fun twist to a romance novel. I am not sure (I won't post a spoiler), you will see the end coming on this one. Jude really holds out till the end to let us in on some big secrets. This book is like a suspense/science fiction/romance novel all rolled into one. I hope that there will be more in the Montgomery Taggert line!

Interesting twists and turns as Jace searches for answers as to why his fiancée committed suicide in a little English village. Stir in quirky supporting cast of characters, a haunted estate and a beautiful reporter, and you have a fun, tasty stew

Terrific book, I just couldn't put it down. The shipping was pretty fast considering the slowdowns with covid-19.

This suspenseful story set in England is romantic mystery with modern and century old components. Jude Deveraux has written many romances, but this has several original themes and none of the trite characters that plague the Velvet series.
A handsome hero on a mission, a feisty and smart heroine, and an unresolved murder all set in an ancient manor house complete with spooky housekeeper (who loves Jamie Oliver) and love able eccentric townspeople.
A real winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasing story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 8, 2010
I admit to preferring Ms Deveraux's novels set in earlier times but yet this one captivated me. The depiction of village life in England was not accurate but amusing and there was plenty of busybodies and gossips which can be found anywhere. Jace has come to investigate the death of his fiance and Nighe is taking a break from her job as a reporter because of a traumatic time in Afghanistan. They are both strong loveable characters and the story of their love is surrounded by ghosts and wickedness. Nice that we hear from Mike Taggart from Sweet Liar again. The characters of the gardner and the housekeeper were well drawn and I loved the frequent references to Jamie Oliver. The mystery of stacey's death adds depth to the tale. All in all I would recommend this book as enjoyable and easy to read traveling ,on the beach or when relaxing
