The next adventure of the Darcy family from the author of Mr. Darcy's Daughters -- the story of a reluctant heiress who has been left a widow by Darcy's cousin Christopher.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single woman in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a husband. So say the friends and family of impoverished widow Octavia Darcy when she unexpectedly inherits a fortune, but she has a different view and looks forward to a new life of independence.

Escaping from the efforts of her half brothers and sisters to marry her off, Octavia goes to Yorkshire to find out more about the family she never knew, and while she is there she meets and crosses swords with landowner and politician Sholto Rutherford.

When she returns to London to share a house with the dashing Lady Susan, Octavia, now secure in her new life, becomes caught up in the romantic problems of her niece. Then, the shadow of George Warren, the old nemesis of the Darcy family, falls over her, and she is threatened with the loss of both inheritance and reputation.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Aston's latest novel (after The True Darcy Spirit) focuses on another woman in the tradition of Elizabeth Bennet, Octavia Melbury. Tall and outspoken, Octavia fails to find a husband in London and is dispatched to India, where she is to live with relatives. There, she marries Capt. Christopher Darcy, but their happy union is cut short when he dies from an insect bite. Christopher's spiteful cousin, George Warren, nabs the estate and leaves Octavia with a pittance. However, a surprise and sizable inheritance comes Octavia's way, and she travels back to England, where she keeps mum about her newfound fortune while her conniving half-sister Theodosia schemes to marry her off. Octavia takes a shine to her smart, headstrong niece, Penelope, who, in turn, fancies a man of lower stature than her mother will accept. Not so for Octavia, whose rocky repartee with Lord Sholto Rutherford matures, inevitably, into love. Meanwhile, George realizes Christopher's inheritance isn't as large as he had thought and plots to steal Octavia's fortune. Aston's villains may be one-note wicked, but the lengths to which their puerile greed sends them make for good reading. Fans of the series will enjoy this chronicle of reversals of fortune. (Mar.)

I get distracted by flaws in the writing, I just wish this book had had a better editor. Many small things like words repeating and potentially better sentence structure and too-modern phrases. But the intent was good.

I have read all of the "Darcy" novels, and this being the best so far. I think the farther away from Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam we get the more believable the characters are.I had a hard time in the earlier books accepting that Elizabeth Darcy would leave her daughters at such a critical time as thier coming out, to someone elses oversite esp. in respect to facing complete ruin due to her own sisters behavior at that age. I also would think that Elizabeth would have more insight into her own daughters temperments and would have been a better correspondent...suspending that, the earlier books were pleasant, but not nearly as good as the "Second Mrs Darcy". Even if you have not read any of the sequels, this book is completely enjoyable.

Octavia Darcy is a delightful character of strength and grace who returns from India as a recent widow and decides that with her new fortune she need not marry and subject herself to the control of another husband. I love the fact that she does not shy away from placing her own political "man" in Parliament to better service the interest of her tenants and her estate. No only does she attract the attention of a "George Wickham" look alike snake, but she also seems to be on the mind of a very influential Lord of the Realm.

I like the friends she develops and her companion, however, I would have liked a little more "story" at the end. It seemed to end abruptly. We can use our own imaginations to develop where the story should go, but it would have been nice for the author to tie it up with a nice bow for us.

I do not shy away from novels that are based on characters other than those Jane developed in P&P. We know that the family grew and there were many stories to come from the Darcy clan. I suggest the readers start with the Darcy Daughters and move down the list to this novel, though is is not required. A lot of the characters in this story will be easier to trace back to our Darcy family in the earlier books.

A good romp through the landscape brought to us in the prior books. Love how Herfortshire is woven in. The characters are what make the book great fun to read.

A nice heroine, a pleasant read, not humorous, a couple of genuinely nasty characters. It would be unreasonable to expect the author to be a genius, which Jane Austen, of course, was. Plus, it's impossible for a 20th-century author to be able to have a 19th century consciousness, the world and the general consciousness having changed too much since then, especially in regard to woman's changed role in society, and religion and its place in daily life. One can only attempt to understand and reproduce it to a small degree. To some extent the author succeeds in doing this.

A definite to have on the library shelf for rereading on a quiet rainy afternoon

I was at first disappointed in this book to see that our beloved characters from 'Pride & Prejudice' were not part of the story. However, as I continued to read I was extremely pleased at the new story line and the new characters. I felt like it took too long to implement Lord Rutherford into the book, nearly 1/2 the book later.

Octavia Darcy was the wife of Fitzwilliam Darcy's long lost cousin. After his dicease, Octavia remained in India until called home to see about an inheritance from a never before known relative, leaving her very wealthy. Her 1/2 sisters and brother cannot stand her and never could.

Octavia is in the same mold as Elizabeth Bennet/Darcy, where personalities are concerned. She is witty, brave, and opposed to stuffy, think too highly of themselves, snobs.

She draws attention to herself when she takes charge of a library rescue operation that is in flames. by Lord Rutherford. It does not go well, but they are destined to meet time and time again, until finally they end up at the same place for an extened period of time.

There are new characters, fairly well untroduced with stories of their own. You will learn to like these people, and want to know more of them.

A cousin of Mrs. Darcy's late husband comes along and tries to claim her inheritance by fraud, but Lord Rutherford comes to the rescue.

This was a wonderful story! Clean! Well written. And I highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit dull
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 3, 2016
I liked the book but ultimately it was rather disappointing. I'm sorry that Eliz Aston has gone and we wont be getting any more books because I enjoyed 2 of her "Darcy" books very much. She seemed to have a way of following on from Pride and Prejudice but not using Austen too much, or writing awful nonsense that would make Jane turn in hr grave. But this Second Mrs Darcy was dull... It didn't seem to have any real plot, and what there was, was all resolved rather quickly. The hero and heroine hardly seemed to interact or care for each other that much. It wasn't funny or witty like Georgette heyer...
