This accessible and engaging book explores the ways that "space, place, and sex" are inextricably linked from the micro to the macro level, from the individual body to the globe. Drawing on queer, feminist, gender, social, and cultural studies, Lynda Johnston and Robyn Longhurst highlight the complex nature of sex and sexuality and how they are connected to both virtual and physical spaces and places. Their aim is to enrich our understanding of sexual identities and practices—whether they be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, asexual, queer, or heterosexual. They show that bodies are defined and connected through media such as television, movies, ads, and the Internet, as well as through "real" places such as homes, churches, sports arenas, city streets, beaches, and wilderness. Drawing on a diverse array of historical and contemporary examples, the authors argue convincingly that sexual politics permeate all places and spaces at every level of geographical scale. Thus, they illustrate, sexuality affects the way people live in and interact with space and place, as space and place in turn affect people's sexuality.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Lynda Johnston and Robyn Longhurst’s Space, Place, and Sex weaves together the intellectual fruits of the 1990s, highlighting on-going conceptual trajectories as they develop in the 2000s, to demonstrate that sex, sexuality, and gender, on the one hand, and place and space, on the other, are necessarily intimately entwined. . . . While this book is theory-rich, it is exceptionally accessible, with chapters building theory into case study from the ground up. . . . This book will be a valuable read to the comparatively uninitiated with regard to geographies of sexualities because of its accessible, targeted use of theory and case study. It will also be invaluable to feminists, cultural geographers, gender researchers, and queer theorists, as a foundation work outlining future directions in research that does justice to both place and sexualities. ― Women's Studies Journal

The authors traverse a range of spaces from the body to the globe in a highly accessible and engaging text. . . . Whether considered alone or as a collection of tightly connected contributions, each chapter in the book mixes original research with critical reviews of existing literature to present a well written and carefully nuanced argument. . . . While the focus of the book might be geographies of sexualities, the authors introduce key geographical concepts such as place, space, scale and embodiment with a rare and refreshing clarity. For these reasons and more, this book should be read by both scholars and students alike and would serve as an excellent text on any course introducing Human Geography. ―
New Zealand Geographer

With compelling attention to transnational space as well as the body, two of the finest geographers working on gender and sexualities have offered us a fascinating book. It will be of interest to social and cultural geographers, as well as queer theorists who need to enrich their geographical imaginations. -- MICHAEL BROWN, University of Washington

Johnston and Longhurst have produced a much-needed, accessible volume that intertwines sex, sexuality, and gender, moving from the body to the global. Sexual politics are shown to be integral to everyday lives, making this an important book not only for geographies of sexualities but geography itself, and one that should be on every human geography reading list. -- Kath Browne, University of Brighton

I use Space, Place, and Sex as the required reader for a second-year Gender Studies unit, and it’s been highly successful. Students have been really receptive to the book and its ideas, and it has provided a fantastic core for the unit’s development around spatiality. -- Alison Bartlett, University of Western Australia

Space, Place, and Sex is a book that was written to challenge, explore, and call for more research on the relationship between geography and the sexed, sexy, sensual, and sexual body. It covers many topics that are otherwise deemed as "too sensitive to discuss," and does so in a way that is interesting, new, and makes the reader create connections between the text and real life. A point I found that the book lacked but certainly could have included is an occupational subject. Perhaps the authors could have explored the variations of occupations where there is a prevalence of gay/ lesbian workers in relation to geography. To even expand further on that, a possible study could have been made or reviewed an issue such as a wage gap, or discriminatory problem. Things i found that were dissected very well were the sections on the construction of the home and the composition of the community. They elaborated upon the physical construction of living spaces, as well as the social and sexual environment that is implemented because of it. In regards to community, they efficiently and thoroughly analyze how communities function on an interpersonal, intrapersonal, micro, and macro level. Upon reading, there have been ideals and concepts in which my perspective and judgement has shifted to a far more understanding and accepting mindset. Having finished this book, I feel as though there is a lens which filters out what we do not understand that has been taken away, allowing me to see the world and small spaces with a higher consideration for others that i can not say i would have without learning about Spaces, Places, and Sexes.

Space, Place, and Sex was a very engaging book that provided me with a variety of detailed information about the homosexual culture of our modern society. Since one out of the two authors were gay, I believe it gave me insight into heterosexual and homosexual view points of the world. The book started out very specific touching many points on gay and lesbian life, specifically in New Zealand. Throughout the book the information became more broad, but no less informing. I learned a great deal of new information about aspects of our community that I would have never even begun to think about such as sexual identities in the home, sex in the city, national identity, and much more. I am glad there were only two writers for the book because I think I would have felt overwhelmed with any more information as I was trying to process it for the first time. The book went into detail on many strugles throughout the gay community and opened my eyes to a whole new perspective on space, place, and sex which was wild and captivating to learn about. The only setback I have to say about it was the conclusion because it kind of left me hanging.. Other than that I loved the book. TWO THUMBS UP **

Theoretical astute, empirically rich, AND highly readable

Space, Place, and Sex takes a whirlwind approach to shedding light on the often over looked sexual geography of our modern societies. The author's approach each point with little to no relavent research of their own, but they rely heavily on the work of others to complete their task. The over all feel to this book is a sense of being rushed through a multitude of different sexual societies, without a ceantralized focus and objective. The lack of an adequite conclusion to this book left a feeling of incompleteness that i can not ignore. That being said, the authors have opened my eyes to problems within our communities that me "as a heterosexual male" would have never been exposed to. I am a firm believer in equal rights, and support the gay movement one hundred percent. The oppression of the gay/lesbian community is no different then the oppression of an entire race. Both the authors do a wonderful job explaining in detail the struggles and hardships the gay community are trying to overcome. Despite the shortfalls i have noted in this review, i would recomend reading this book regardless of your sexual preference or gender.

Space, Place, and Sex is a somewhat detailed look into the world of sex in New Zealand, prodominately the gay scene. This was due in large that one of the authors was gay, which, in my point of view kind of narrowed the viewpoint of this book because this book seems to only talk about the world of homosexuals in New Zealand. The scope of this book started out very specific in the fact that they hammererd pretty heavily on the gay scene in New Zealand. As the book continued, they scope of the book got more broad, but still held true to what the others knew, and that for me made this book ok instead of outstanding. It was an interesting read and I learned new things, but if they would have had more writers with different viewpoints, it would have benefited the book greatly. Another concept that puzzled me is that the authors of this book talk about how gay people deserve to be treated like the rest of us and should be integrated with society, which I agreed with. But then it continued to elaborate on how gays purposefully isolate themselves with gay bars, Pink Flights, I don't think it helped get their point across and frankly it confused me. Other then these drawbacks, this book did widen my perspective on New Zealand's gay scene and was at times fairly interesting and captivating. 2.5/5

This was a very interesting book to read if you are interested in the sexuality of others across the world. This book contains important and interesting information about many sexual groups and their geography. When reading this book it is important to keep an open mind and not judge. Since the book is written from both a homosexual and heterosexual point of view it is truly an educational piece that will help anyone with any questions relating to sexuality. I personally enjoyed this book as a quick read for a cultural geography class. Before reading this book I was close minded and stubborn, however, now I feel slightly more open to people of different orientations.
