The Last Time I Saw You: A Novel Paperback – Large Print, April 6, 2010

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 1,047 ratings

From the beloved bestselling author of Home Safe and The Year of Pleasures, comes a wonderful new novel about women and men reconnecting with one another—and themselves—at their fortieth high school reunion.

To each of the men and women in
The Last Time I Saw You, this reunion means something different—a last opportunity to say something long left unsaid, an escape from the bleaker realities of everyday life, a means to save a marriage on the rocks, or an opportunity to bond with a slightly estranged daughter, if only over what her mother should wear.

As the onetime classmates meet up over the course of a weekend, they discover things that will irrevocably affect the rest of their lives. For newly divorced Dorothy Shauman, the reunion brings with it the possibility of finally attracting the attention of the class heartthrob, Pete Decker. For the ever self-reliant, ever left-out Mary Alice Mayhew, it’s a chance to reexamine a painful past. For Lester Heseenpfeffer, a veterinarian and widower, it is the hope of talking shop with a fellow vet—or at least that’s what he tells himself. For Candy Armstrong, the class beauty, it’s the hope of finding friendship before it is too late.

As Dorothy, Mary Alice, Lester, Candy, and the other classmates converge for the reunion dinner, four decades melt away: Desires and personalities from their youth reemerge, and new discoveries are made. For so much has happened to them all. And so much can still happen.

In this beautiful novel, Elizabeth Berg deftly weaves together stories of roads taken and not taken, choices made and opportunities missed, and the possibilities of second chances.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“[Berg] has a knack for taking you right into the soul of her characters, as they respond to joy and tragedy in a perfectly imperfect way.”—Chicago Sun-Times

“A warm, unsentimental look at life way past high school—and the hope some people hold of reliving those glory days.”—
People (four stars)

“For the delightful hours it takes to read this novel, it seems that the characters jumped right off the page and joined the crowd for a casual family supper.”—
Chicago Tribune

“Marvelous . . . plenty of pathos and can’t-stop-laughing moments . . . Readers will care about every character.”—
The Oklahoman

“Book groups are clamoring for upbeat yet significant works that are entertaining as well as enlightening; Berg’s latest novel satisfies and succeeds on both counts.”—
Booklist

This is a great book. I laughed so hard!

Ms. Berg drew me back into a world where sitting at the popular table mattered. The pecking order well defined by jocks, pretty girls and the "wannabes" with the rest of the class straggling in somewhere behind them. High school days are not known for their kindness and this reunion is no exception even 40 years later.

Ms. Berg's story revolves around five main characters: the jock, the pretty girl, the crass wannabe and the sympathetic girl and boy who never fit in. Granted the characters are stereotypical and superficial, but then isn't high school that way in real life? Ms. Berg made the characters interesting, warts and all. Although I never warmed to the wannabe even at the wrap up of the story years laters. The story pace is right on the mark keeping the reader's interest from beginning to end.

This is my first Elizabeth Berg book but it won't be my last. If she can make a high school reunion a page turner then this is a author I want to read again.

Enjoy the read!

Elizabeth Berg's novel, The Last Time I Saw You, is about a fortieth high-school reunion as told through the eyes of several different people planning for the reunion, attending the reunion, and then what happens afterwards. I read the Kindle version. There were a few typos since it is just out, and, since it is easy to change font sizes, I find more run on words than in printed books.

Dorothy Shauman, the high-school beauty, now divorced and having a difficult time being alone and with her grown daughter, sees the reunion as a chance to get back together with chief jock Pete Decker. But Pete is having problems of his own. He still has his good looks, but he finds he is with a woman he doesn't like or respect. He wants his wife back, but she has decided to move on.

Lester Hessenpfeffer, the school nerd and valedictorian, is now a successful veterinarian. However, since his wife died, he fears he will never find love again. His office manager talks him into attending the reunion even though he would rather stay home and take care of his patients. Mary Alice Mayhew was never part of the in crowd, and doesn't know why she should go to the reunion. But she's curious about how her classmates turned out. She's been helping care for an elderly neighbor who decides she should go to the reunion and he goes with her.

Candy Sullivan, a high-school beauty, has just learned she has ovarian cancer. Her husband has all but ignored her for years and now he is concerned about her and offers to go to the reunion with her even though he refused to before they knew how serious her illness was. She goes without him.

The author did an excellent job writing in the various points of view. In one place, she partially repeated a scene to show it from another characters viewpoint. The story is about what happens when these characters and their friends and classmates get together again. Elizabeth Berg was born in 1948 and that makes her eligible to have attended a fortieth high school reunion. Since I've been to my fiftieth reunion, I know she is talking from experience. It was a wonderful experience reading this book while thinking about my own reunion. I just wish there had been more follow up on the characters before the book ended. But it was just enough to let us know what happened. I guess I wasn't ready to say goodbye to my new friends.

While I don't identify with the age group that is the focus of this book, I found it to be an enjoyable read. I liked how each character was intertwined yet you didn't find out how much so until you read further. There wasn't much depth or substance to this book however it was interesting enough to keep the pages turning and the reader engrossed. I would recommend this more for an older demographic than myself... perhaps the above 40 crowd?

Imagine your 40th high school reunion. And having the life experience to realize your classmates were, just like you, children. This book was a fascinating study of life, being a teen and maturing enough to understand what it’s really all about. Loved the characters…but wish I’d had a bit more detail on one couple.

Having just attended my own 40th Reunion in August 2008, I found this book especially entertaining, but I'm also a die hard Elizabeth Berg fan. I own every book she's ever written. While I can't say that there are any life changing truths uncovered in this story, the reality of regressing to one's high school persona no matter how many years since graduation seems to be a universal truism. I was the Twiggy thin smartest girl in the class who was good enough to do any guy's homework, but, God Forbid, not a date. I thought I had outgrown these feelings of inferiority by my 10th reunion after experiencing 4 years of "popularity" in college (skinny was the new Marilyn Monroe) and an executive position at work. Wrong. I sat in a corner the entire night feeling like the girl with whom no one wanted to eat lunch. But, I persevered and went to my 20th, 25th, 30th, 35th, and 40th reunions, and each got better as the general "shock" on each face upon entering the room (as in "Who ARE all these old people?") became more and more common. I also married a classmate shortly after the 20th reunion which made those in the future obviously more fun.

Berg's concentration on a handful of classmates, some popular, some "nerdy", the direction their lives had taken, and the expectations each brought to this reunion, billed as "the last" for reasons never explained, makes the reading experience as personal as being at the reunion yourself. Not surprisingly, some who hoped to "hook up" did, some didn't, but everyone left a different person than they were when they arrived. Berg is one of the few authors who can tell a story from start to finish with minimal back flashing and set forth universal truths in fewer pages than can most other best selling authors in twice as many pages. If I have a complaint about Berg, it's that her books aren't long enough. I'm always sad when they end and wish she'd learn to double the length of her stories. Aside from never being ready to end when she is, I just feel like I've got my money's worth when the book is closer to 400 pages long.

I hope she doesn't retire any time soon.

This is the first book by Elizabeth I have read. It built up in layers gradually, all tying together towards the end. No major drama but a realistic take on a school reunion
