The funniest and most popular sportswriter in America abandons his desk at Sports Illustrated to caddy for some of the world’s most famous golfers—and some celebrity duffers—with hilarious results.

Who knows golfers best? Who’s with them every minute of every round, hears their muttering, knows whether they cheat? Their caddies, of course. So sportswriter Rick Reilly figured that he could learn a lot about the players and their games by caddying, even though he had absolutely no idea how to do it. Amazingly, some of the best golfers in the world—including Jack Nicklaus, David Duval, Tom Lehman, John Daly, Casey Martin, and Jill McGill—agreed to let Reilly carry their bags at actual PGA and LPGA Tour events. Reilly also caddied at the Masters, persuaded Deepak Chopra and Donald Trump to use him as a caddy, accompanied high-rolling golf hustlers in Las Vegas around the course, and carried the bag for a blind golfer.
Between his hilarious descriptions of his own ineptitude as a caddy and his insight into what makes the greats of golf so great, Reilly’s wicked wit and an expert’s eye provide readers with the next best thing to a great round of golf.

Review

“Reilly could write about lawn bowling and make it funny, informative, and entertaining. You never know what the next page is going to bring.” —Los Angeles Times

“You might not think the story of a man carrying Tommy Aaron’s golf bag for 18 holes could make you laugh out loud, but you’d be wrong
. Who’s Your Caddy? is funny enough to coax a chuckle out of Vijay Singh. A great way to read about the game—and its people, too.” —Charlotte Observer

“Goes down faster than a cool Bud on a 100-degree day.” —Fort Worth Star-Telegram

I'm a recovering sportswriter -- two meetings a day -- who now writes books and movies and tries not to shoot his weight in golf.

I cranked out the back-page column for Sports Illustrated for more than 20 years and then did TV features and columns and swept up for ESPN for eight years.

I'm not a particularly smart man. Once, in Malaysia, I was about to pop the little hotel bedside chocolate into my mouth when my wife hollered, "That's the bug incense, you idiot!" Once, I was kayaking by myself when it began to rain. I paused, cursing my luck. Then the rain stopped. I started paddling again. Rain again. Pause. No rain. Started paddling again. Only then did I realize it was my paddle throwing drops on my head.

I'm crazy for people and their swings and misses and their small victories and sorrows and, most of all, their stories. I think that's what's always driven my writing. It was never about the sports -- I tried hard not to ever put numbers in my columns -- it was about the people who played them.

This latest book about Trump, though, rose out of the sheer gall he had to tell people he'd won 18 club championships, when I knew he faked most of those. How did I know? He told me! (Liars have a hard time keeping all their lies straight.) That set me on the trail of what other lies he was telling the world about his golf and his golf courses, which wound up being my latest: "Commander In Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump."

Anyway I hope you like it.

A really fun read, giving an insight into the lives of these celebrity characters.

I was really pleased with Reilly's effort here. After initially hearing the author shilling the book on Jim Rome back when it was first released on hardcover, I never had much of an inclination to read it. I've found the bits of Reilly's work that I've read in SI often too sentimental and too snarky.

In the meantime I have picked up a fairly serious interest in golf, and when I stumbled across the book again, I thought I would pick it up. "Who's Your Caddy?" won me over and proved that I had been haboring a number of misconceptions.

First, you needn't be a golfer to enjoy the work. There are some moments where Reilly sinks into golf-speak of the kind that I think every weekend player grows tired of by about the second tee when you're out playing with that clown from work or the brother-in-law who's sporting a [...] putter, [...] irons, and a $1 million ego because he's a 4 handicapper. But, the book mostly takes a trip around the course that is accessible to golf novices. Especially when Reilly joins amateurs like Donald Trump (I've always wanted to find a way to plausibly refer to Trump as an amaetur) and Deepak Chopra for a round, the story moves quickly and humorously.

Reilly even convinced me that he isn't the guy I would have thought he had to be after reading his SI work. Like the [...], naked under his raincoat, Reilly can't seem to help himself from unleashing overweight sarcastic sidebars. These inhibit the best parts of the story, but with a self-depricating twist that ususally leaves him as his own target, these diversions actually contained some redeeming moments.

Finally, he does descend into melodrama (the typical golf schlock type stuff, i.e. golf is the great game that challenges your will and quickens your mind and personifies American freedom), but only very rarely, and that restraint rescues the book from what might have become the nonfiction take on Bagger Vance.

Other reviews are right on target, this is not the kind of Updike, Heinz, etc. sports writing that actually captures the humanity and value of sports on paper - its silliness. But, on a summer afternoon when you'd rather save the $250 in greens fees and lost balls, this book should do the trick.

I very much liked being able to pick this book up and put it down. I take it with me when I know I will have a wait and Rick Reilly's writing style is very easy to read.

I enjoyed the book and Reilly's sense of humor. Thought the price was a little high. Would read other books by him.

First and foremost, this book is funny! As many other reviewers have mentioned, Reilly is a hilarious writer, and this book is great for relaxation or entertainment. Each chapter basically contains an account of the author's experiences caddying for various famous people. Of course, a considerable number are professional golfers (both male and female), but quite a few are famous for other crafts and instead play golf recreationally.

What I found most interesting about this book is the insight he provides in the inner world of golf. We find out information about the professional tours that you really can't pick up from the television or newspaper. This book gives you an idea of what it's like to actually be around professional golfers and the world they live in. The conceit of being a caddy is used to great effect since the caddy is the closest person to a player when he or she is on the course.

Most golfers would thoroughly enjoy this book, but Reilly writes in an approachable and eminently readable fashion, so it's likely a great many non-golfers would find this book a fun read. If you have even a passing interest in the world of golf, get this book!

Will entertain golfers, golf fans and even a few random sports fans who don't necessarily follow the golf circuit.

Bought it for my husband as a gift. He lived it...short stories about caddying.

Whenever I would get my Sports Illustrated in the mail I would turn to the last page. That was where the Rick Reilly essay always was. It was therefore refreshing to start reading his prose on page 1 and every page thereafter. This book should come with a guarantee: at least one laugh per page. His wit, observations, and revelations about golf and the men and women he caddied for are priceless. I consider Rick Reilly one of the higher echelon sports columnists and humorists along with Jim Murray of the LA Times and Bill Conlin of the Philadelphia Daily News.

Really enjoyed this book which had laugh out loud moments. If you don't or have never played golf I think it would be difficult to get the humour element. The writing is excellent and different story lines with high profile individuals make the book for me.
If you enjoy playing golf this is a definite book for you, I really enjoyed it.
