Dodge City Trail, the (book 8) (CH) (Trail Drive) Hardcover – Large Print, October 1, 1999

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 133 ratings

'An extraordinary saga' - ST MARTINS Dodge City was a businessman's dream. And a cattle drive north - with thousands of unbranded longhorns and a remuda of stolen Mexican horses - was a dream of Texans like Dan Ember, who'd come home from the war to find a rich man's hired guns living on his land. Now Dan and his neighbors would risk everything on a drive across the Llano. Killers would fight over them, the gunslinger Clay Allison would join up with them, and Quanah Parker's Comanches would try to thwart them - in a bold adventure fueled by the courage to face death, and the pride to keep going.

Like all of the books in the Ralph Compton Trail Drive series this book is full of vivid landscapes and descriptions of the conditions and hardship these pioneers had to endure and the action is non stop, the characters are both heroic and flawed, he is my new favourite Author, right up there with the late and sadly missed Vince Flynn, creator of Mitch Rapp, both of these writers had a way of immersing you in the story and although you don't want it to end, you can't put it down.

Another great book by a very good writer. Great written stories as this is a tribute to the west. This book held my interest to the very end.

These are very readable books and well suited for reading aloud. They have been entertaining my husband and myself for many years. To reread them is like visiting old friends. As the reader I like not having to filter out cuss words or too much gore. (as in Johnstone's books) Just good story lines and action and plenty of stampedes.

This is a great book as are all of Ralph Compton's book if you love Western stories. The books, although fiction, are well researched and have true facts included in each one.
