This National Velvet book was wrapped with paper and ribbon. There was also a postcard, mini horseshoe, and handwritten note. Very sweet and thoughtful!!

National Velvet is a classic novel that I adored as a child. I purchased this as a gift for my friend's young daughter who is learning to ride and is an avid horsebuff. It's beautifully written. Ages 9-12 will especially identify with Velvet.

I’d heard about this classic since my childhood, but read it for the first time this month (I’m 63). Beyond the crazy dream fourteen year old Velvet Brown has, it is a beautiful portrait of someone with a special soul.

Very enjoyable book. A bit different in the writing style than most books. You get a feel for Velvet as a character and her likable but somewhat quirky family, who are all given personalities and some background. Story diverges quite a bit from the classic movie with Elizabeth Taylor but the basic points are still there. A young girl obsessed with horses wins a talented horse in a lottery and then goes on to ride horse in the grueling steeplechase that is the Grand National with the help of the family friend named Mi. The book is a few decades old now, so it assumes some basic knowledge of what the Grand National is, as well as how hard it would be for a young girl to ride in the race. Also some not common words like gymkhana used quite a bit but still able to be followed without too much googling or dictionary opening.

The book came in great condition and in a timely manner. Thank you! I bought the book for my horse-loving granddaughter.

The vernacular is written as spoken almost 80 years ago. Difficult for a 9 year old girl.

Bought this for my niece and she said it was difficult to start reading with too many character introductions right off the top but then again she’s nine so maybe when she’s 12.

5.0 out of 5 stars One for horse-mad readers of all ages

This was a replacement for the copy I had owned for decades, since childhood. Years living under my teenage pillow had damaged it, and it finally disintegrated from its umpteenth re-reading. It is an incredible story, made believable by the wealth of character and lack of sentimentality. The old film of this should be avoided, as the book is so much more convincing and very engaging.

A great story., but British references and the age of the book make the story difficult to follow for young readers.

The book arrived quickly and well packaged. I remember loving this book as a child. It was being serialised on the radio and I happened to catch an episode on my way home. As soon as I got in I went on line and ordered the book. It's a lovely, lovely book. Great for children and adults alike.

This is a book well worth reading. A true story (which I was not aware of until the finish). What a long way women and girls have come. Wonderful!
