Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

An unplanned pregnancy, a destructive break-in and a nasty gazpacho incident are just a few of the problems facing Julia Murdoch in Ross's diverting 10th cozy to feature the North Carolina matron (after 2008's Miss Julia Paints the Town). When naïve Hazel Marie, the former mistress of Miss Julia's first husband, learns that her flulike symptoms have another cause, it's up to the enterprising Miss Julia to patch things up between Hazel Marie and her estranged PI boyfriend, J.D. Pickens. Meanwhile, a burglary at the house of lawyer Sam Murdoch, Miss Julia's second husband, means trouble. The disappearance of Sam's meticulous files on local court cases suggests there are parties who don't want information on Abbot County's philandering judge and corrupt sheriff to see the light of day. Those who prefer a leisurely pace, a touch of screwball comedy and gentle puzzles in their mysteries will enjoy this paean to smalltown nosiness and steadfast loyalties. 6-city author tour. (Apr.)

From Booklist

Genteel and proper Miss Julia has had a lot to contend with ever since her husband of 44 years, Wesley Lloyd Springer, died, and his mistress, Hazel Marie, showed up at her front door, son in tow. Since then, Hazel Marie and Little Lloyd have become like family—a family that’s about to get bigger, since Hazel Marie is unexpectedly pregnant with twins. Unfortunately, Hazel Marie’s on-again, off-again relationship with the father, private detective J. D. Pickens, seems to be off again, and J. D. has left town. How to hide the mother-to-be’s condition from the well-meaning but easily scandalized townfolk of Abbotsville, and get the couple to the altar? And what’s behind the theft of some of the records Miss Julia’s new husband, Sam, was using to compile his legal history of Abbot county? Series fans will enjoy finding all the familiar elements in place. --Mary Ellen Quinn

Ann is the mother of two daughters and one son, and the grandmother of four grandsons (including twin boys) and two granddaughters, both of whom are her namesakes. When her children were in college, she decided to complete her own education, enrolling in the University of North Carolina at Asheville where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Literature. Reluctant to return to an empty nest, she continued her education by enrolling in the English Department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she earned both the Master's and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Afterwards, she taught Literature and the Humanities at the University of North Carolina at Asheville.

Ann's writing career began in the early eighties when two mysteries were published as original paperbacks: THE MURDER CURE and THE MURDER STROKE. A few years later, her first hardcover book was published: THE PILGRIMAGE, an adventure story set in the nineteenth century. All three books are now out of print, but occasionally a used copy of THE PILGRIMAGE appears on Amazon.com for sale.

The publication of the first Miss Julia book, MISS JULIA SPEAKS HER MIND in 1999, set Ann on a full-time writing career. This book went through six reprintings in less than a year, and was ranked #9 on the Independent Booksellers' seventy-six most highly recommended books for 1999. In addition, the book was named to the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers list. The paperback edition of the same book was listed in The Best Books of the First Five Years by BookSense, as one of the titles independent booksellers most enjoyed handselling. The book was also published by Readers Digest Condensed Books, appearing in twelve foreign languages.

MISS JULIA TAKES OVER was one of seven nominees for the Book of the Year Award (2001) by the Southeastern Booksellers Association.

All of the books in the series are available on audiotape and in large-print editions, and are also available through The Literary Guild/Doubleday Book Club. All of the books, except the newest one each year, can be found in paperback editions.

MISS JULIA THROWS A WEDDING, MISS JULIA HITS THE ROAD, MISS JULIA MEETS HER MATCH, and MISS JULIA'S SCHOOL OF BEAUTY have all appeared on the New York Times Extended Bestseller List.

All of the books in the series will be published in German, Japanese, and Croatian editions, as well as on audiotape (in English) and in large print editions.

Inspiration for the escapades of Ann's much-loved character, Miss Julia, comes in all manner of ways -- a chance remark by a friend or family member, an incident she happens to see, in a dream, or by being reminded of something in her past experiences. It is always deeply satisfying to her when scenes in the book she is working on suddenly seem to fit together to make a good story. She does not outline or make detailed plans before starting a story. She does, however, have a general plot in mind before beginning to write, but this usually entails only the conflict and the final resolution, with few ideas of how they will be worked out. So, with just the beginning and the end of a book decided on, Ann relies on the characters themselves to fill in the middle with first one subplot after another. This, she says, is the joy of writing -- when a character suddenly does or says something unexpectedly, leading her to funny and surprising 'mini-scenes' that seem to delight readers.

Ann was once asked by an interviewer how she knew when something she'd written was good. She replied, "I know it's good when I fall off my chair laughing." From that response, we can be sure that she enjoys writing about her characters as much as we enjoy reading about them.

I love the Miss Julia books. This 'lady of a certain age' is a fun read. Everyone of the books in this series is an easy light read. It is always fun to follow Miss Julia through her challenges to see how she steps up to meet them after thoroughly thinking it through. I had to download everyone of the books in the series. The challenge for me was that they are not numbered so it was difficult to know which one to read next to get some sequence in her stories. I highly recommend the whole series to readers that are looking for a book with a good plot and a light read.

The "Miss Julia" book series is very entertaining! I have purchased and enjoyed every single book of this series and will buy each new book as soon as they are available in the future. I have passed the book series on to several different people and each of them enjoyed the reading as much as I did. I recommend that readers start from Book 1 and make your way through the entire series.

As this 10th installment opens, Miss Julia is in the midst of yet another social dilemma. When the source of Hazel Marie's `mystery illness' is discovered it falls to Miss Julia to ensure that all the responsible parties Do The Right Thing. Inconveniently, the responsible parties (namely Hazel Marie and the commitment-shy J. D. Pickens) are not presently on speaking terms. As time is of the essence Miss Julia works feverishly behind the scenes to reconcile the pair (fast!) and with Lillian's help manages to stay one step ahead of the gossip mill. Is it possible that even the indomitable Miss Julia won't be able to work fast enough to save them all from social ruin?

You could argue that nothing much happens in this book ...and I'd pretty much agree with you. The enjoyment for me comes from spending time with these wonderful characters that have begun to feel like old friends after so many years. Miss Julia and Lillian have such witty and fun dialogue; their scenes together just come alive. I love fictional Abbotsville with its Southern small town idiosyncrasies and regional charm. Most of all, I really appreciate the overall "feel" of this book - warm and uplifting. Predictable in the best possible way. Yep, I consider this my literary Zoloft - mood lifting with the added benefit of no unwanted side effects!

To really appreciate the characters in this series I think you need to start at the beginning with "Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind". It is a joy to watch these characters grow and evolve from book to book. Highly recommended for those who enjoy Southern fiction (on the lighter side) with just a hint of a cozy-type mystery tossed in.

Swearing? Sexual content? Not on Miss Julia's watch - why, what would the neighbors think?

Oh, I’ll readily admit I could sometimes take Miss Julia and give her what for - and heaven knows she would deserve it. But, at the same time, it’s impossible not to applaud her pluck and her concern for her growing family. In this novel, she watches Hazel Marie and Mr. Pickens at odds, hoping against hope that the two will grow up and own up, if only for the sake of the family Hazel Marie is nurturing. And, with all the work Sam Murdoch has put into his history of the county, it’s difficult not to hope that his files have survived and will be returned to him. And, as with all Miss Julia’s escapades, all is well in the end. Maybe not quite the way Miss Julia would prefer, but close enough. Bless her heart….

If you’ve not read any of the Miss Julia novels, my suggestion is to start with the very first one and work through them in an orderly fashion (unlike the way I’ve done it, starting with the second-to-last and last one, then going back and randomly hitting various of them in no particular order until just the last couple). You owe it to yourself (and Miss Julia) to start at the beginning. And she’ll love you for it, bless her heart…

Small-town life can be comforting, but it can also be unkind, as Miss Julia and Hazel Marie know. When Hazel Marie has an unexpected and initially unwelcome pregnancy, the Springer-Murdoch household is abuzz trying to keep secrets while taking care of her. Soon the web of deceptions is almost more than Miss Julia and her cohorts can handle...and that's just the beginning!

Ann B. Ross has once again woven a story full of humanity and self-imposed laughable situations created by the rich cast of characters we've grown to love. Just as always, we do not welcome the end of the book, and can't wait for the next! What a fun read.

Another great story in the series !!!!
Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2017
Having completed Ann B. Ross’s Miss Julia Delivers the Goods, I have now read ten of the books in the series. This one is my least favorite. Most of the narrative is Miss Julia, the indomitable Southern matriarch of a very unusual “family,” fretting over a problem in Hazel Marie’s life. Hazel Marie was Miss Julia’s late husband’s mistress, so you can see what I mean when I put quotation marks around the word family. Hazel Marie’s problem could lead to her leaving their small North Carolina town, and if that happens, Miss Julia will lose not only this younger woman she’s come to love but also Hazel Marie’s son Lloyd, the offspring of Miss Julia’s deceased husband and a young man whom Miss Julia thinks the world of. The mystery that usually appears in this book that involves Miss Julia, often puts her life in danger, and provides a dilemma for her to solve is present in Miss Julia Delivers the Goods, but it is extremely secondary to Hazel Marie’s problem. And therein lies my issue with this edition of the series. I found it tedious, for we know in the end that all will be resolved harmoniously and the solving here just seems to be a “let’s get it done; no, we’re delayed” over and over and over. The narrative moves quickly, the characters are charming and engaging as ever, albeit frustrating in their actions, and I will definitely read the next book in the series. But I have to say, for me, this one just didn’t please as much as the others of Ross’s Miss Julia books.

Miss Julia, a modern heroine in the Southern style, always delivers the goods. She lives "down South" in the US, but there is a bit of all of us in this woman who trys so hard to be good mannered but is nosey, and always wanting to get on with solving life's (and everyone else's) mysteries!
