Trouble at Sugar-Dip Well Hardcover – Picture Book, March 25, 2002

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 2 ratings

Out in the brown and dusty West lived a cowgirl named Jules— genuine like leather, strong like licorice. Her horse, Gertie, could sing, dance, cook, make a mean cup of coffee, multiply, divide, and speak three languages . . .

Mean Bulldog Pike and his horse, Bullet, give this talented twosome a run for their money with a crooked scheme to steal all the water in Sugar Dip. Will Jules and Gertie be able to save the town from this dastardly plot, or will the people of Sugar Dip never enjoy another glass of water again?
In the tradition of dusty desert towns and cowgirl grit, Jules and Gertie blaze new trails as the toughest ten-gallon heroines in the Wild West. Yikki Yea!

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

When a bad apple rides into town on his "greedy horse" and taps the water supply, then sells it back to the townspeople in expensive sips, cowgirl Jules and her trusty horse, Gertie, come to the rescue in Trouble at Sugardip Well by Esther Pearl Watson. Acrylic and colored-pencil illustrations bring Knot Belly and its inhabitants to life in this sequel to The Adventures of Jules and Gertie.

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3-The Adventures of Jules and Gertie (Harcourt, 1999) ended with Mean Bulldog Pike and his greedy horse in jail and the town of Knot Belly safe from their dastardly deeds. In this latest adventure of cowgirl Jules and her horse, Gertie, the villains have busted out of jail, stolen all of the water from the Sugar Dip Well, and are selling it back to the thirsty residents at a hefty price. In the end, their plan is foiled by the heroic gals, but not without some edge-of-your-seat moments in between. The bold, childlike acrylic and colored-pencil illustrations tell the story quite well on their own without the distraction of the text; the facial expressions perfectly capture the determination of the characters, both the good and the nasty. The Western-style language is often exaggerated and children unfamiliar with "meanwhile back at the ranch" scenarios and frequent use of similes may find the story a bit hard to follow. Still, feisty cowgirl stories are hard to come by and in the right hands this one could be a fun read-aloud.

This is a lovely hero story. And who does not love cowgirls and horses?? This was a very fun book to read. Gotta make sure these kid stories are appropriate for my future grand babies.
