A twenty-first century woman is stranded in first century Pompeii when a time travel experiment goes awry; she is sold to a wealthy family as a house slave. This provides her with an intimate, upstairs/downstairs perspective on household life in ancient times. At first she does menial work, but she improves her situation by telling stories and making prophecies. As her influence grows, she wins the love of her master and his daughter and provokes the vengeful jealousy of his wife.In this gentle fable about the power of stories to change people's lives, the heroine uses sources that include fairy tales and great works of literature to argue for womens rights and the humanity of slaves, and to inspire herself and others to be resourceful, courageous and independent. Miranda's own life becomes as mythic as the stories she tells. In a narrative that is part adventure, part romance, and part fantasy, the heroine triumphs over adversity and makes a place for herself in the world of the past.Visit the companion web site at www.rebecca-east.com to see ancient works of art that inspired the descriptions of characters and settings.

In this excellent novel, a woman of the 21st Century is transported for purposes of scientific and historical research to the Italy of the Emperor Nero's time. The protagonist, Miranda, is a young scholar who expects to remain in the past a short time, and then return. But destiny has other plans, and she is quickly caught in the local gears, captured, and sold into slavery to a wealthy household in the city of Pompeii. Thus begins an excellent story. The author's description and portrayal of life in Roman Pompeii is startlingly realistic. I enjoy reading novels about life in Ancient Rome, and I cannot remember a single one that created a background and picture of life there as realistic and dazzling as this novel creates. If all that were not enough, this novel features a solid storyline and some excellent characterizations.

This is not really a science fiction novel. Here, time travel is simply a device to enable us to experience ancient Pompeii through the eyes of a twenty-first century educated woman. The entire story is told in the first person, and the author carries this off very well. The writing in this novel is uniformly excellent and I will absolutely be looking into other works by this author. Recommended. RJB.

I did enjoy this read very much but agree with other reviewers, the characters needed more development and the scenes and descriptions of Pompeii needed a little less development. I felt sometimes the scene was set too well for the characters that were in it. We're set into the room perfectly, even seeing the goo and crumbs on the ground, the light, the smells but then not much about the characters who were in the rooms. I also think Miranda's stories are a bit too involved but the reactions to them by the characters are not developed enough. I would have loved more development and description between interaction between Marcus and Miranda. In the beginning it was very good that he was more of an enigma and a mystery to her but as the story goes on he should have developed a bit more. How hard was it for him to hurt and punish her? When and why did he fall in love with her? Why was he willing to give and take away her freedom? Why was he willing to give all at the end to have her or lose her?

This was a great read. Although there is a plot to follow, which is engaging and plausable, the descriptions of roman life for both the haves and have nots is accurately depicted. I loved the descriptive immagery. The plot line has a romantic theme to it, but it is not mushy and cliche like a corny romance novel. I am a guy and even I found the romantic theme entertaining. There's more to the plot than romance, the main character is also trying to figure out where she belongs in an era which is not her own. (She travels back through time and space to the city of Pompeii in the year A.D. 62) She finds that a lot of her preconceived notions are false and that human beings are the same regardless of time period. It is a great yarn and a fun read. I hope Rebecca East writes more books along this same line.

Although AD 62 Pompeii has an element of time travel, I would not classify it as science fiction. Miranda travels through time. That is the extent of the science fiction element. I would classify it as more of an historical fiction account of Pompeii in AD 62 and a great one at that.

I really did enjoy Rebecca East's novel and I would rate it 3 ½ stars if Amazon would let me. The story was interesting and captivating. East described Pompeii almost as if she had been there herself. I think a lot of time and research that went into this book. I'm not an expert but Ms. East seemed to know a great deal of Pompeii during that time. Her descriptions were clear and vivd and I fle like I was there. Miranda was a likeable character. I loved her voice.

That being said, there was something I did not like about the novel. I felt that phrases were often repeated. This would happen on the same page or a few pages later. In this sense, it almost felt like a young adult novel. At one point I had to ask myself if I was rereading or if I had forgotten to move down the page!

I can't decide whether or not I liked Miranda's luck. Miranda was one of the luckiest characters I have ever come across. She did suffer as a slave but not in the way that other slaves at that time suffered. I think she got off easy. On one hand I feel like it's nearly impossible for anyone to be that lucky as a slave. I don't want to give anything away here so I am leaving it as "lucky." On the other hand if she were constantly beat or raped I'd probably grow sick of reading about that. I suppose it was a balance, especially since this is a time travel fiction book and the concept of far fetched is more than acceptable.

Although I felt a shortcoming or two, I did go in search of another novel by Ms. East and if there is one in the future, I will most likely read it.

I agree with other reviewers that there were some annoyances in the writing of this book. Repetition and foreshadowing that was more like being hit over the head with a club. But the story and the historical detail, evidencing a great deal of research, made it well worth while. I felt transported back to ancient times and enjoyed experiencing it all through the eyes of a time traveler so that I could relate as she did. In spite of my minor criticisms, I would love to read more by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story

A delightful diary of a fictional woman called Miranda which recreates life in Pompeii before it's destruction. East did excellent scholarly research on this highly believable story. She relates how after following an academic career in the USA when she studied Classical archeology including Latin and Ancient Greek she has a chance to travel backwards in time and chooses to visit 62AD. She is equipped with a safety device to enable her to return to the 21st century but initially this will not work when activated.
On arrival in Campania AD62 she is taken and sold into slavery and it is only her ability to create music with her recorder that saves her life and prevents serious ill treatment.
For me the interest was 3 fold partly my own fascination with the Pompeii disaster and ruins and what we can learn about life in Ancient Rome. Secondly the restrictions on life for women in first century AD contrasted with the feelings and approach of a liberated 21st century woman and finally a brilliant portrait of the whole lifestyle, food, slaves, religion etc then cleverly culled from the Pompeian ruins. Worth reading

4.0 out of 5 stars Like going into the past

Considering I adore anything about Ancient Rome and have read several factual books about this time period, I was super excited to read this time travelling novel.

We follow Miranda who decides to travel into the past for an experiment but it doesn’t go to plan, she ends up sold into slavery.

She ends up a house slave in a big villa with a family which is much more than she could have hoped for, being as she will experience ancient Roman life for herself. This novel is beautifully detailed and I could imagine everything as described, a lot of research has gone into making this historically accurate.

Miranda becomes accustomed to her new life, and tries to keep out of trouble as much as possible, I admired her strength and her determination in keeping to her values and making sure she always had a choice, she comes across as headstrong - except for when it comes to Marcus.

Marcus is an honourable and respectable character and I enjoyed seeing him grow and fall in love with Miranda. I loved the ending and enjoyed the story thoroughly! I only wished it was longer!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ancient history fiction at its best

I love ancient history and this book did not disappoint.
The story is rich and easily evokes the imagination into seeing and feeling everything from the smells of bread and food in the market to the beautiful finery in the wealthy houses.
I felt sorry for the slaves and the way they were treated and taken for granted.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that loves history and a wonderful story that has a touch of fantasy and time travel.
