Winner of three Tony Awards, including Best Book, Greg Kotis and Mark Hollmann's Urinetown: The Musical is a tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold.

After a twenty-year drought made water a scarce commodity, private toilets became outlawed. Now, all restroom necessaries are controlled by the Urine Good Company (UGC), a megacorporation that charges fees for using public toilets. Anyone unable to pay fees--or who dares to relieve themselves outside the commode--are arrested and banished to "Urinetown".

When UGC employee Bobby Strong's father falls victim to this tyranny, he spearheads a revolution, inspiring the people to rise up and reclaim their own restroom duties--unaware of the realities and consequences of his actions...

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Elevated silliness of the highest order that makes a gratifying case for the restorative return to knowing foolishness and the smartly absurd. The show winks at everything from Hamlet's father's ghost to West Side Story, from the revolutionary pretensions of Les Mis to the revivalist joy of Guys & Dolls.” ―Linda Winer, Newsday

This play is assigned reading for a college ethics class where professors from different disciplines teach this course. Our class is taught by a theatre professor who has great knowledge of lessons that can be learned from dramatic literature. The story line is farcical and entertaining with an underlying message for those of us who have to look for it. I recommend it.

Urinetown is a great musical full of heart and a solid story. This musical does have a bad title however dont let it scare you away because it has a great story of good VS evil paired with a beautiful love story. This musical will take you on a journey filled with fun and exciting twists and turns!

This musical is great for:
-Large group musical numbers
-Small group musical numbers
-Duet musical numbers
-Solo musical numbers
-Duet acting
-Monologues

Never forget that it is always a 'Privilege To Pee'

Urinetown is one of my favorite musicals. I saw the musical the week of 9/11. I lost a lot of friends and former colleagues, was at Ground Zero when it happened. A lot of shows didn't go on, but Urinetown decided the show must go on, we must not give in, be defeated, and I was never so glad. The whole audience was so grateful. The music and performances were great, brought joy and tears. Recently my husband saw the production in London -- he could not fly in to join me for the NYC show because there were no flights going in and out then, I invited a friend -- and we were both reminded how lucky it is to be alive, to be able to find joy in spite of everything.

Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) in Reno is performing this play in March 2006. I should add that it is one of the first community theaters to get the rights to producing this still-running show. Having the book in this format has been very helpful while blocking the show instead of lugging around the bulkier copies provided to us; however, as the Music Director pointed out, the lyrics written in the book don't exactly match what is in the score. But if you are an aficionado of Broadway Musicals, this is a fun book to have!

This was for my boyfriend to prepare his lines for his next show. He was over the moon about it and kept saying how it was great quality and that he loved all the photos and illustrations.

Stupid title but the show is a great, fun musical despite the bad subject matter and lousy title. If you enjoyed _The Drowsy Chaperon_ you will enjoy this one too. The Act One finale is worth the price alone.

My school is putting on this play, and it is probably one of my favorite plays that we have done. It has a great storyline, wonderful characters, and extremely catchy music. I recommend this play to anyone!

Brilliant musical. Saw the West End production and loved the humour. This script has a great introduction as well.

Voilà une comédie musicale à laquelle personne n'a vraiment accordé de chance. J'espère que quelqu'un lui donnera l'adaptation grand écran qu'elle mérite.
