From the bestselling authors of The Rose of the Prophet and The Death Gate Cycle, the first in a majestic saga of magic, fantasy, and adventure

In the enchanted realm of Merilon, magic
is life.

Born without magical abilities and denied his birthright, Joram is left for dead. Yet he grows to manhood in a remote country village, hiding his lack of powers only through constant vigilance and ever more skillful sleight-of-hand.

Forced to kill a man in self-defense, Joram can keep his secret from the townspeople no longer: he has no magic, no life. Fleeing to the Outlands, Joram joins the outlawed Technologists, who practice the long forbidden arts of science. Here he meets the scholarly catalyst Saryon, who has been sent on a special mission to hunt down a mysterious “dead man” and instead finds himself in a battle of wits and power with a renegade warlock of the dark Duuk-tsarith caste.

Together, Joram and Saryon begin their quest toward a greater destiny—a destiny that begins with the discovery of the secret books that will enable them to overthrow the evil usurper Blachloch . . . and forge the powerful magic-absorbing Darksword.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Outlawed by the mage-priests of Thimhallen since the Iron Wars, the Ninth Mystery, called Technology, has survived only among society's outcasts until a young man born without magic and a priest who is a catalyst of magical energy form an alliance that shakes their complacent and stagnant world. The authors of the "Dragonlance" series again demonstrate their talent for vivid world-crafting and strong characterization in a novel that will appeal to fans of epic fantasy. Recommended. JC

Weis & Hickman have been favored authors of mine since I was 12yrs old. They have a way of writing that even when slow, makes you want to keep going.

For the Darksword Trilogy specifically....

I can identify with how Joram feels. If you have been so long without something you are actually due....what would you do to get it given the chance????

Seeing him go from young child to adult while trying to hide what he is is interesting and seeing Saryon wrestle with his desire to help while Joram while staying true to his faith is a good thing....a very good thing!!

I have read every single books these authors have written and have thoroughly enjoyed them all. Although this will never pass as an exceptional example of this type of literature, it tells an exceptional story and is very solidly written. I would recommend this book (and these authors) to anyone who is a fan of science fiction/fantasy.

Okay, this review isn't entirely for the book itself. If it were I would easily give it more stars because the Darksword trilogy, just like the Dragonlance series, was a huge part of my childhood and still reads well today. No, this review must unfortunately reflect the Kindle edition of this book which is, sad to say, absolutely atrocious.

There are just way, way too many typos...and most of them make absolutely no sense. The adaptation to ebook is truly horrible. Is a little proofreading too much to ask? I mean, at least learn to properly use spell check or something. These need to be edited and reissued immediately, because to ask readers to pay $7.99 for an inferior, defective product is just insulting.

I highly recommend picking up the Darksword series in print (preferably an older printing through a used bookstore because I have zero confidence in any new editions based on this execrable ebook). It's a very good story if you can get a better version.

I had this book in my collection years ago but never read it and now wish I would have read it then. The storyline behind this book is amazing and clever; something that will keep you enthralled to the very end. Hickman and Weis are outstanding story writers. If you love the fantasy genre this book is a must read!

One of the books that made into an avid reader of the genre as a teenager. One that I re read often.

I've read this 3 times in print and twice in digital form. Great trilogy. But what else would you expect from this pair?

I very much love this trilogy!!! it was a rare "cannot put down", back in the paperback days. I read alot of fantasy, and this is one of the more engrossing stories, with an un-sympathetic main character who I happened to relate very closely to. I am *very* happy to re-acquire this in Kindle now...

4.0 out of 5 stars Darksword

What appeals to me mostly is the beautiful explanation of the creation of the Darksword.
Shannara trilogy sadly never mention how the sword was created.
So here I can finally imagine the Shanara saga using similar ways to create their sword.
The whole Darksword saga is unfolding nicely and interested to see how it unfolds.
