Carry the Wind Paperback – March 1, 1986

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 120 ratings

Young Josiah Paddock, on the run from his past in St. Louis, didn't have much hope of survival.  Winter was coming to the Rockies, and if the cold cutting through his city clothes didn't kill him, grizzlies or Indians would.  Then his luck tumed.  He stumbled across the trail of Ol' Scratch, a solitary mountain man eager enough for company to take the brash youngster under his wing.  Pure chance brought Paddock to the old trapper's camp, but it was skill with a gun and a knife that kept them both alive as they rode deep into the majestic land of Blackfeet and Crow, bible-spouting pioneers and sensual woman where only the best and braves survived . . . and only the luckiest rode back again. Carry The Wind is a gripping historical saga set in the Grand Tetons during a time when the horizon never ended and a nation was being born.

I do not read a lot of Western novels and seldom have an interest in reading historical novels. However, after reading some reviews of Terry C. Johnston's books I bought the trilogy written about the fur trade in the Grand Teton mountains during the 1820s. The first volume, "Carry the Wind" follows the adventures of Titus Bass (old Scratch) and Josiah Paddock his young sidekick as they live the lives of the mountain men of the times. This story is cruel, brutally violent and sexually explicit at times but is part of what makes the books so realistic, along with the excellent research that went into the writing of the book. The book is extremely well written and many scenes from the story will stay with me for a long time.

I found this novel to be a slow read....it is almost 700 pages long, published in small type and the language and speech patterns of the dialogue are hard to follow at times. So, take your time and read this wonderful story and let it sink in as I did. You will be rewarded with a fine adventure. I am hooked!!!!

Titus Bass continues his compelling journey in this historical series of the beaver trapping fur traders of the mountain frontier in the U.S. He is such a realistic character and I just really enjoy these stories.

The book depicts the Mountain Man era very well. Would rank it with The Big Sky by Guthrie and Mountain Man by Fisher. Looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy!

Author Terry Johnston tells a rivoting story of hard living and free spirits in the American West during one of the greatest periods of our history. I've traveled to many of the places he describes in his book and know he has as well. His descriptions of the people paint a picture that will be relived in my mind for many years to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars For Fur Trade era fans.

I had a copy when it first came out in the 1980s. The story gets many of the details of the era correct and is of itself mostly interesting. I enjoyed it except for the excessive emotional blubbering which seemed to be at odds with the way we know men of the ear acted, but would be fine with those who enjoy the idea of men crying and sharing their feelings and hugging so common today.

For me a trip in nostalgia. For those with great interests in fictional stories of the ear that are not riddled with inaccuracies, perhaps a good read.
