The modern heroine of the national bestseller Interred with Their Bones returns, in a thriller centering on Shakespeare's eeriest play.

A legendary theatrical curse . . . A rune-engraved blade, a mysterious mirror, and an ancient cauldron . . . And a ritually murdered body laid out in the manner of ancient pagan burials.

Kate Stanley, Jennifer Lee Carrell's dauntless Shakespearean scholarturned- director, made a memorable-and New York Times bestselling- debut in Interred with Their Bones. Having chased down her mentor's killer (and recovering one of Shakespeare's lost plays in the process), Kate's fame as a director with an expertise in "occult Shakespeare" catapults her-and Ben Pearl, her partner in crime-solving-into a new production of Macbeth, showcasing a fabled collection of objects relating both to the play and the historical Scottish king for whom it is named.

The Bard's witch-haunted play is famously cursed, its reputation for malevolence so strong that many actors refuse to quote or even name the play aloud. And as rehearsals begin at the foot of Scotland's Dunsinnan Hill, it doesn't take long for the curse to stir. Strange references to the boy actor who first played Lady Macbeth in Shakespeare's day-and died in the role-pop up. A trench atop Dunsinnan Hill is found filled with blood, and a severed human thumb turns up among the props. And Kate begins sleepwalking, waking early one morning alone atop the hill, her hands smeared with blood.

Kate has no memory of how she got there, but later that day a local woman is found dead on the hill in circumstances that suggest not just ritual murder but ancient pagan sacrifice. With the police more focused on Kate as a suspect than as a possible future victim, she and Ben find themselves in a desperate race to discover a lost version of Macbeth, said to contain rituals of witchcraft aimed at conjuring demonic forces to gain forbidden knowledge. However much Kate would like to dismiss such rituals as superstition, someone else appears willing to kill for them-and for the manuscript said to spell them out.

Marked for sacrifice, can Kate Stanley uncover the killer before she becomes the next victim?

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Agreeing to direct Shakespeare's notoriously ill-starred Scottish play plunges scholar-sleuth Kate Stanley into a cauldron of trouble in this heady, occult-steeped thriller, the sequel to Interred with Their Bones. The reclusive Lady Nairn, decades earlier the bewitching actress Janet Douglas, plans a production featuring priceless Macbeth-linked antiquities, her own return to the stage, and—if Kate can find it—a rumored earlier version of the play said to include actual magic rites. No sooner does the cast assemble at Lady Nairn's Scottish castle, however, than all hell breaks loose. Kate's hallucinatory vision of the savaged body of Lady Nairn's granddaughter foreshadows two very real murders—with Kate a prime suspect. Carrell deftly uses literary scholarship as a springboard for her plot, especially the suspense-building leaps back to Shakespeare's day. She's less successful with the supernatural elements, which increasingly strain credulity, and an anemic romantic subplot.(Apr.)

From Booklist

The quest for knowledge, particularly forbidden knowledge, is at the heart of this literary thriller based on the premise that Shakespeare’s Macbeth originally included magical rites omitted by the playright after a young actor died before the play’s premiere. Acclaimed actress Lady Nairn recruits Kate Stanley, academic-turned-Shakespearean-director, to find the original manuscript and stage the play, immersing Kate in a deadly hunt involving the occult. Trying to save Nairn’s granddaughter from unseen forces that also want the manuscript, Kate travels from Scotland to London to New York and back, with timely assistance from her former lover, security expert Ben Pearl. The foreboding atmosphere, during which brutal ritual murders are committed, is interrupted by sixteenth- and seventeenth-century accounts that build the case for the novel’s thesis, based on Carrell’s considerable research (as explained in an afterword). While Shakespeare scholars may quibble (as they did with the author’s previous novel, Interred with Their Bones, 2007) and while explication of arcane information occasionally impedes action, general readers are likely to be swept along as the level of danger increases, with the ongoing relationship between Kate and Ben a bonus. --Michele Leber

Author of novels and history. Writing curve: smallpox, Shakespeare, art. Currently at work on historical fiction about my favorite painting, Jan Van Eyck's Arnolfini Wedding.

I've wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember. Early on, my fallback career choices were ballerina and astronaut. Much later, I thought I'd become a Shakespeare professor. Through some strange twists and turns, I've circled back to writing.

I was born in Washington, D.C., but I grew up in Arizona. I have a Ph.D. in English from Harvard, along with undergraduate degrees from Oxford and Stanford. I was first pulled into studying literature by the Arthurian legend, and later by Norse sagas, Tolkien, and Shakespeare; my father jokes that I majored in fairy tales. It was something of a surprise to find myself writing thrillers; now I'm turning to historical fiction. Before I began to write books full time, I taught literature and writing at Harvard. Later, I was the classical music critic for the Arizona Daily Star. I've also written a number of pieces for the Smithsonian Magazine.

Here's what I think about writing: Storytelling should be an adventure, not just the stringing-together of other people's adventures. On the trail of stories, I have: rappelled from a six-story tower using an emergency hand-tied halter (while writing about the training of firefighters); tracked mountain lions on mule-back through the mountain range Geronimo used as home base and hideout; held Yo-Yo Ma's cello; ridden the roller-coaster ride of a professional cutting horse (herding cattle); and posed for David Hockney on a BBC set while stuffed into a medieval gown originally made for Star Trek, with a red-velvet turban improvised from a set of men's pants perched on my head. From the sublime to the ridiculous -- and all of it wondrous

I live in Tucson, AZ, with my husband, daughter, two dogs, and three literary cats (who try to help me type out my manuscripts).

I loved Jennifer Lee Carrell's first book, <i>Interred With Their Bones</i>. I was hopeful for the second book of the series bringing back Kate Stanley and Ben Pearl. This offering takes place in Scotland, and centers around the supposed curse of the Bard's Scottish play (<i>MacBeth</i> for non theater persons). While the action is not nearly as globetrotting as in the first book, there is still a wonderful atmosphere of mystery and history. If you like Shakespeare, Scotland, <i>Macbeth</I>, or the first Carrell book, I highly recommend this second book in what I hope is a longer series.

Jennifer Lee Carrell's newest installment of her Shakespeare inspired novels that began with Interred with Their Bones and a wild ride in search of Shakespeare's lost play Cardenio now delves into one of Shakespeare's darkest and most superstitious plays Macbeth.

When last we saw Kate Stanley, she was relishing directing the first production of Cardenio since Shakespeare himself participated. Now, Kate, who famously researched Shakespeare's ties with the occult in her professorship days, finds herself pulled into the very active world of the occult in modern times, and modern meaning. As we know from Kate's rants in the first book, the word occult in Shakespeare's times had a different meaning than it does today, and she has previously turned her nose up at the thought of any sort of hocus pocus in her beloved Bard's work. Now, through a series of grisly murders and threats, Kate finds herself thrust into the world of the dark arts.

As in her previous novel, Miss Carrell spends time in both Shakespeare's time and in the present expertly weaving a tale that will keep you riveted for the entire ride. As with the first novel, the subject matter is well researched, and thought provoking. Miss Carrell notes that she spent time researching Wicca, so don't be put off: this novel is not a witch hunt...Well, until it is ;)

I first read Carrell's Interred with their bones and found it amazing, so i had to read the squeal. It came up short for me. I love Shakespeare and just saw Macbeth a few months ago so was really excited about reading it. I found the book to be slow paced and did not fall in love with the characters as much.
The absence of Ben Pearl and Kate;s relationship was saddening since it seemed so perfect and strong.
Still a good read but after Interred a disappointment.

This is an amazing follow-up to Interred With Their Bones. I started reading this novel as soon as it came in the mail, I finished it in 2 days, I could not put it down. As a lover of adventure and Shakespeare, this was wonderful. I will probably wind up reading it again. I am very glad that I purchased this novel.

This is a sequel to Interred With Their Bones. Kate has been offered a mysterious commission by the Lady Nairn to direct "the Scottish play" using some unique props at the ancestral home. She also tells Kate of a rumored manuscript of the play that incorporated magical rites. She warns Kate about not going alone to the nearby hill. Kate, unable to resist, sees a disturbing sight of Lady Nairn's niece, murdered. Escaping from the hill, she runs into Ben Pearl, her former lover, and security expert who helped her solve the previous mystery. When they find the niece alive and well, Kate begins to wonder what she really saw. As the play gets ready for rehearsal, Kate meets the cast, one of which is now the girlfriend of Ben. When a woman is found dead, hung in the woods, things begin to get mysterious. Kate wonders who she can trust and if she can now solve twin mysteries. The plot has some twists and turns and a few moments where you must suspend disbelief a little, but overall it was a satisfying thriller/mystery. I enjoyed all of the tidbits surrounding the Shakespearean play and the historical pieces. While not as satisfying as the first, it was still a good read.

The only thing I didn't like was the obligatory romance but I don't fault the author for that because publishing houses refuse to print anything that doesn't appeal to American hormones. That the story is well-done despite the twaddle says much for the author's skills.

Sequel to "Interred With Their Bones", I was not as excited about this book. It lacked the surprise twists and revelations that I loved so much in the first book.
