This is the illustrations volume which accompanies the Old Testament series of the Cambridge Bible Commentary. It is arranged on the same general plan as Mr Jones's successful companion volume on the New Testament. It contains 201 photographs, maps and drawings arranged in groups with a connected commentary which describes each picture in detail, explaining its significance. The whole collection provides a background study of the Old Testament lands and peoples. The sections deal with the geographical setting, the archaeology of the region, the periods of Old Testament history from the earliest times to the Hellenistic period, the social background, the Old Testament books as literary productions, the background of Jewish religious life. Maps are skilfully simplified to give only the information relevant to understanding the Old Testament itself The diagrams explain technical subjects. The photographs, of scenes, buildings and works of art, and the continuing tradition of Jewish religious practice, give life and visible confirmation to the study of the Scriptures.

Top review from the United States

Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2017
“More daunting in size, much more diverse in content and style, and much more remote from us in time than the New Testament, [the Old or Hebrew Testament] is for many, both literally and metaphorically, a closed book. …Can anything be done …to make it more comprehensible? …This volume has been compiled in the belief that it can.” (p. 9)

The provision of photographs (black and white), maps and plans, and charts and diagrams brings this off. While “not all parts of the Bible are equally suitable for illustration by means of the graphic arts” (ibid.), features such as an ivory comb from Megiddo, a painting of Jacob’s dream, multiple views of Ur and Lachish, copper-bearing rocks, and ziggurats can be easily found via a well-constructed index. A separate index of pertinent biblical texts is also helpful. Maps, time-charts, etc., have been simplified to reduce non-essential obfuscation; often in such matters the accompanying text will suggest that “the standard textbooks on the subject must be consulted for further details.” (p. 24, e. g.)

Bear in mind that this accompanying narrative is that of the early Seventies; so much research has been done since that time that descriptions of the illustrative material may need correction or amplification in some instances. An amusing example is the description of the then cutting-edge technology of using punched tape to get the Bible onto magnetic tape! (Those of us who remember this are dying off!)

Since copies of this book are inexpensive and plentiful, you may wish to have this for supplementary usage.

3.0 out of 5 stars An introduction to biblical archaeology
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 4, 2011
I bought this book because I thought some of the illustrations might be useful for teaching, but it is not quite what I expected. From the title and description I had anticipated really just a book of plates with captions, but in fact this is a sort of potted biblical archaeology, covering the whole of the history of ancient Israel down to Maccabean times, with further sections at the end on society, literature, and religion, the last two of which include the later development of the text of the Hebrew Bible and of Jewish worship. The illustrations are still useful of course - they include reproductions of some modern paintings as well as photographs of ancient artefacts, monuments, and archaeological sites - but naturally the text has to be read in the light of its date, 1971, and not as representative of more recent conclusions about either the archaeology of biblical sites and times, the literary development of the Old Testament, or the history and character of ancient Israelite religion. A modern introduction to these themes, written from a critical perspective, would look very different.
