A visual odyssey that will change the way we see our planet, this remarkable book, companion to the acclaimed Discovery Channel/ BBC series, is an enduring and awe-inspiring record of one of the most ambitious natural history projects ever undertaken. Using the latest aerial surveillance, state-of-the-art cameras, and high definition technology, the creators of Planet Earth have assembled more than 400 stunning photographs of wondrous natural landscapes from around the globe, including incredible footage of the rarely spotted, almost mythical creatures that live in these habitats. Many of the images reveal inaccessible places that few have seen and record animal behavior that has never been filmed or photographed before. With the help of this highly advanced technology and the world's premier wildlife photographers, the book takes us on a spectacular journey from the world's greatest rivers and impressive gorges, to its mightiest mountains, hidden caves and caverns, and vast deserts. Planet Earth captures breathtaking sequences of predators and their prey, lush vistas of forests viewed from the tops of towering trees, the oceans and their mysterious creatures viewed from beneath the surface, and much more—in a magnificent adventure that brings unknown wonders of the natural world into our living rooms.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this gorgeous coffee-table book, an offshoot of the Discovery Channel/ BBC series of the same name, zoologist and BBC producer Fothergill takes readers on a kaleidoscopic tour of the flora, fauna and natural history of the Earth's poles, forests, plains, deserts, mountains and oceans. The series of jaw-dropping photographs starts with a view of Earth from the moon (and pointing out the obvious but shocking fact that no one has been able to see it live since the 1972 Apollo 17 mission). Other images reveal the astonishing variety of geology and life around the globe, including an emperor penguin eyeing an enormous jade-green iceberg; a grove of ancient monkey puzzle trees on the slopes of the Andes; a wild (and endangered) two-humped Bactrian camel strolling with her calf across the Gobi Desert; a long-furred, red-eyed gelada (a kind of primate) perched on a cliff in the Ethiopian highlands; a cave explorer parachuting into Mexico's 1,100-foot-deep Cave of Swallows; a blimplike nerpa (the only known fresh-water seal) swimming through Siberia's Lake Baikal; and the lacy undulations of the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta captured by satellite. The book's only drawback is its large size and heavy weight, which makes for cumbersome reading. (Mar.)

From Booklist

This is the companion volume to the BBC/Discovery Channel series I^ Planet Earth, narrated by renowned naturalist and pioneer of the nature documentary Sir David Attenborough and produced by Fothergill. The two paired up to create the series I^ The Blue Planet (1998), the first natural history documentary presented in high definition, and now Fothergill presents a collection of more than 400 photographs that focus on what is most wonderful about the living world. He takes readers on a whirlwind tour from the frozen poles to the great forests, across the Great Plains and great sands, up to the mountain heights, down into the underworld, into fresh water and rain forests, over to shallow seas and down to the ocean depths, capturing the wonders of plant and animal life. A superb wake-up call to protect the treasures of the planet that sustain, and enrich, us, I^ Planet Earth is a feast for the eyes and soul, presented with the best and latest technology. An absolutely astonishing book. There is no need to go into depth in a review because this is a must have. The picture quality is amazing and the content of this book is simply breathtaking. These are images you will remember for the rest of your life.

Even after seeing the entire series in HD on a beautiful television there is nothing that can compare to these unbelievable printed images with full story included.

This is the best for a coffee table book or perfect for your den. Your visitors will thank you!

Having watched the entire planet earth series on the Discovery channel I decided to purchase this accompanying book and it was one of the best decisions i made. this book is atonishing in both its clarity of detailed images as well as in its detail of explaining the world in which we live. The information provided is somewhat basic in parts but is more than compensated by the terrific photography. There has not been another book published like this in recent years. All of the praise it receives is well earned.

This is a BEAUTIFUL book with photos from all over the world and from all sorts of habitats. I actually bought it as a gift, but think I will order one for myself as well. It looks like there are HOURS of interest here, since it explains the various ecosystems of earth and shares photos of each and how it impacts the flora and fauna of each region.l

I really thought that this book would contain eye-popping shots, for being Planet Earth. Rather, it contained some low quality images, which for me personally, was a little disappointing. If you watch Planet Earth on TV, the shots are HD quality and superb, so the images in this book should be able to deliver the same quality. Other than that, it is still a nice book to own.

This book is amazingly gorgeous. I saw one on a coffee table at a job interview and didn't get to finish looking at it. I went home and ordered one for myself. It is beautiful and informative and fun to look at again and again.

I just got off the phone with my father who was the recipient of this book from me, and I quote: "This is a work of art! I will read this over and over! The photos are out of this world! The quality of the paper used is outstanding!" I bought this book based on the reviews already written. I'm so glad I did!

Quality of the photographs wasn't impressive. However, it is a good book to place in a doctor's office or on a coffee table if needed. This is not a good book for someone who loves photography and wants to see photos of nature, because they will criticize the quality. Many of the photos are much less impressive, beauty-wise, than I would have expected (I mean, you'd think they'd choose only "wow" photos, right?).

This is a beautifully produced high quality book suitable for display on your coffee table to be enjoyed by all. It appears (to me) that all magnificent photographs and much of the text are the same as that found on the DVD series with the great advantage of not requiring a DVD player to partake of all the splendor our universe still affords us. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

I, like a lot of people, thoroughly enjoy a lot of the TV documentaries that the BBC Natural History Unit produce - and especially so if they're narrated/presented by Sir David Attenborough as he seems to bring out the most of the presentation, despite the filming often being the significant element !

This 'Planet Earth' book, along with many others of the 'book of the programme' genre based on the BBC Natural History Unit's work, is an excellent example of why still photos and text can often compare very favourably, even better, than video/voice (I also have the Blu-ray of this series).

This is especially so as a fairly recent trend (ie problem !) is to almost 'drown out' what we see and hear with music deemed to be dramatically relevant to the moment being 'covered'. The narration can also be rather simplistic, generic ands a bit 'twee' for my liking....

With this book you enjoy the best of what 'Planet Earth' had to offer, at your own pace and with a wealth of quite stunning photos reproduced to the best possible effect on good quality paper - albeit that the soothing tones of Sir David are absent !

The Amazon product webpage includes a 'Look inside' feature so you can get a good idea of what's on offer....

So, in some ways this book is better than the TV series and considering that it should be easily possible to pick up a very decent-condition 'used' copy for a snip on Amazon Marketplace as I did.

For lovers of these kind of books and especially the work of the BBC Natural History Unit it is something of a 'no-brainer' and highly recommended.

A beautiful book. had it re delivered on 11th Jan, as I was not in unexpectedly, and it was too big to go through the letterbox! Stunning photos, no pages missing or foxing. Acknowledgements at the front, but I am not bothered about that. Couldn't believe the price. Already got both DVD's of each Planet Earth, and am waiting for the other book, which I have ordered. The book and the first DVD of Planet Earth go together. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in David Attenborough, Alistair Fothergill, and The Natural World. You will not be disappointed!
