About the Author

Susan Herbert (1945–2014) was one of the most distinctive and popular cat artists. She studied at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, University of Oxford. She was the author and illustrator of The Cats Gallery of Art, The Cats History of Western Art, Diary of a Victorian Cat, Medieval Cats, Pre-Raphaelite Cats, Shakespeare Cats, Opera Cats, and Movie Cats.

The illustrations in the book are fantastic; they fit the characters wonderfully. I use this book when I teach shakespeare to college students, many of whom are going to someday be teachers. An analysis of the illustrations gives insight into the Shakespearean characters in way that looking at words on a page doesn't. Great fun for any age group. My English majors have given copies to their siblings, neices, nephews, etc. for holiday gift giving.

I hoped this was a story, but I will find a way to use the pretty pictures. The book isn't constructed in a way that I can encourage its use as a picture book for young children. I do like the fact that there is a passage beside each picture. That will be of some use.
