Editorial Reviews

Review

"[The writing] was the book's principle strength. It is a truly accessible book. . . . Students might even become better writers by reading this textbook! . . . It's probably alone in its field in this respect, and I can't praise it enough. . . . Students can learn with this book, and I don't say that about many textbooks."

"Finally a textbook that examines the history if music in the wider context of Western civilization. The reader gets a clear sense of how music functioned in society."

About the Author

Craig M. Wright received his Bachelor of Music degree at the Eastman School of Music in 1966 and his Ph.D. in musicology from Harvard University in 1972. He began his teaching career at the University of Kentucky and for the past forty years has been teaching at Yale University, where he is currently the Henry L. and Lucy G. Moses Professor of Music. At Yale, Wrights courses include his perennially popular introductory course, Listening to Music (also part of the offerings of Open Yale Courses); his large lecture course Exploring the Nature of Genius; and most recently his Coursera course Introduction to Classical Music. He is the author of numerous scholarly books and articles on composers ranging from Leoninus to Bach. Wright has also been the recipient of many awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Einstein and Kinkeldey Awards of the American Musicological Society, and the Dent Medal of the International Musicological Society. In 2004, he was awarded the honorary degree Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Chicago. And in 2010 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, joining fellow inductee, banjo player Steve Martin. In addition to LISTENING TO MUSIC and LISTENING TO WESTERN MUSIC, EIGHTH EDITION, Wright has also published THE ESSENTIAL LISTENING TO MUSIC, SECOND EDITION; LISTENING TO MUSIC, CHINESE EDITION (Schirmer Cengage Learning/Three Union Press, 2012), translated and simplified by Profs. Li Xiujung (China Conservatory, Beijing) and Yu Zhigang (Central Conservatory, Beijing), both of whom worked with Wright at Yale; and MUSIC IN WESTERN CIVILIZATION, MEDIA UPDATE (Schirmer Cengage Learning, 2010), with coauthor Bryan Simms. He is currently at work on a volume titled MOZARTS BRAIN: EXPLORING THE NATURE OF GENIUS.

Bryan R. Simms (Bachelor of Arts, Yale University, 1966; Ph.D., Yale University, 1971) has taught since 1976 at the University of Southern California, where he has been director of graduate studies and is currently chair of the department of musicology. He is the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Fulbright Foundation. He is the author of books and articles on topics in twentieth-century music and music theory, including MUSIC OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY (Schirmer 1996) and, most recently, THE ATONAL MUSIC OF ARNOLD SCHOENBERG, 1908-1923 (Oxford University Press).

Craig Wright's most recent book, The Hidden Habits of Genius, to appear in October 2020, is the outgrowth of his popular Yale University course, "Exploring the Nature of Genius." It represents a multi-decade study of geniuses throughout history (Einstein, Curie, Mozart, Bezos, Jobs, Picasso, Ben Franklin, and Lady Gaga among them) as well as personal observations gleaned from watching geniuses in action, at Harvard, Yale, and elsewhere. Each chapter identifies one or more enablers of genius and concludes with suggestions as to how such agents can be incorporated into everyday life.

Craig Wright is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, holds an M.A. and Ph.D from Harvard, and taught at Yale for forty-four years where, as the Moses Professor of Music Emeritus, he continues to teach "the genius course" online each summer. Wright has been the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, an honorary doctorate of humane letters of the University of Chicago, and in 2011 was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

This is the textbook my university uses for the music history curriculum. The chapters are concise and easy to understand. The audio tracks available through Spotify really help enhance the curriculum.

WONDERFUL textbook. It is better written, and easier to read, than any other music history textbook I've encountered. I enjoyed the Resource Center and used it often in my graduate coursework. I'd recommend it to anyone wishing to learn more about music, or to any collegiate teacher looking for a better music history textbook for their class.

The book was in nearly perfect condition, no page folds, but a slight tearing on the inside of the spine causing the book to stretch a bit. It does not change the functionality of the book however. As a textbook, it is quite high quality! Excellent content, great rhetoric.

I purchased this book for a class and I loved it. Every chapter is well organized, with plenty of examples, graphics, and illustrations to understand concepts better.

I received this book today and opened it to find it quite damaged. Online it said very good condition. I don't think water damaged is considered good condition...

[...]

I don't have time to return the book but it's a shame that I'm going to lose almost all resale value....

This is a great resource for college students. I highly recommend this book to faculty for their music classes. The readers will get to know the historical background information on music and composers as well as the analytical comments/scores about the music. Music has a big role to play and western civilization and this book provides the big picture. I highly recommend this book to all students and faculty.

I bought this book and paid extra to get it within two days and that was almost a week ago and it hasn't been shipped. I need this book for a college class and am not impressed with the speed of service or lack thereof.
