I have lived abroad. I have sponsored green card immigrants to the U.S. In my opinion this book, or its twin, should have been published decades ago. For the person who grew up in Bulgaria or Brazil or China or Ethiopia, etc., this book is invaluable. Life in America is not like the American life seen in the movies or on TV. If you did not grow up in America, it is almost certain that daily life in America is unlike daily life where you grew up. (Just how different American daily life is from the place you grew up depends, of course, on where you lived before coming to America. If you grew up in Toronto, Canada, the U.S. may not be that different from what you are accustomed to - but if you grew up in China or Eritrea or Japan or Argentina or Russia or Taiwan, etc., the U.S. is very different.) It's different as to social customs, dating, family relationships, body language, special occasions like marriages and funerals, interacting with police and landlords and people at work. Daily life is different in America as to schools, health matters, attending parties, standing near other people, using the buses and countless other aspects of daily life.

Every university that issues a visa to a foreign student should provide a copy of this book to that student. Every U.S. embassy or consulate assisting a foreigner in moving temporarily or permanently to the U.S. should do the same. For Americans welcoming family or friends to our shores, this is the ideal gift. It is sure to be passed around, read and re-read until the binding falls off!

For the newcomer lucky enough to have a copy of this book, here's a bit of friendly advice: Make a mental note of a few parts of this book that are of special interest to you. When you meet Americans and have a chance to talk with them, ask them about something mentioned in the book. Ask "How should I handle a job interview?" or "What is a good gift for a baby shower?" or "I don't drink alcohol. What should I do or say when I am offered an alcoholic beverage?" Make new friends while learning more about "fitting in" as a fellow resident of America.

Having lived abroad for twelve years, I am no stranger to the "How to get by in ...." genre of literature. While most cultural guides can prove to be biased or culturally idealistic - as the authors can only anticipate certain issues and respond in subjective fashion - "Life in the USA" does its best to avoid this trap by allowing the issues to derive from actual letters describing actual concerns of actual foreign students in the US. While it may be impossible to produce a cultural guide that does not bring some points of view into dispute, the humor, candor, and simplicity of the student/teacher correspondence makes this book one of the most helpful, and certainly the most original and entertaining, cultural survival guides available to those looking to make a life in the United States.

Life in the USA is a delightfully candid book for ESL students and American immigrants who are trying to figure out American culture and their English teachers who are trying to explain it to them. At times reaching the point of a situation comedy, at times touchingly sad, at times painfully honest it is a good reminder that for many immigrants American culture is a labyrinth of discovery. "I hear people speaking so many different languages. Will I ever meet an American and learn English?" or "He is no longer friendly at work and I think I did something wrong but I don't know why. Can you help?" In a series of authentic, confounding student letters answered by their thoughtful teacher, this little gem covers everything from body language, relationships, social customs and manners, to surviving in the city and the workplace. If you ever need help figuring out life in America or explaining it to someone, be sure to pick up a copy of Life in the USA.

Somebody said to me a long time ago, "you'll find easy to adapt to USA, because American people don't have a culture." It was hard to believe it. There is a culture in this country, a vast culture I'd say.
I wish I could have read a book with all the details about America, as the ones content in "Life in the USA". This book should be in everybody's bookcase. When one doesn't speak the English language and tries to immerse in USA culture, it is quite difficult. It is hard because one is thinking about our country's traditions, one expects to have the same reactions and it is a complete error. "Life in USA" has the power to facilitate your adaptation to the American Life.
