Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

Regardless of your level of coaching experience, you are likely to be asked to support the development of people with whom you share a professional or personal relationship.

In this thoroughly revised and updated edition of his best-selling book The Mindful Coach, expert coach Doug Silsbee presents his practical Septet Model as an ideal tool for conducting coaching conversations with executives, leaders, and other professionals. The model differentiates seven roles (or Voices) that anyone in a coaching role can use when engaging in these learning conversations: Master, Partner, Investigator, Reflector, Teacher, Guide, and Contractor. In this important book, Silsbee illuminates the dynamic relationship among these seven roles and shows how to integrate them into an intelligent strategy that can be applied to any coaching conversation.

Designed as a down-to-earth resource, The Mindful Coach is filled with practical exercises and sample dialogues for learning and applying the model. Throughout the book, Silsbee's strong emphasis on self-knowledge and mindfulness integrates with the Septet Model in a transformational approach to coaching that has consistently produced significant and sustainable results for leaders in Fortune 100 companies, nonprofit organizations, business schools, education, and government.

The Revised Edition of The Mindful Coach is a great resource for coaches who wish to transcend in their capacity to support the development of leaders, executives, and other professionals and simultaneously develop oneself as a coach.

Being mindfully honest, open, straightforward is a necessity in coaching with excellence. Learning to know ones attachments and aversions and letting go of them, and mindfully fading into the background as the coachee assumes his own personal power is a superb gift this New and Revised Edition of The Mindful Coach provides.

The book presents and explores the seven Voices (Master, Partner, Investigator, Reflector, Teacher, Guide and Contractor) or roles through which coaches conduct professional dialogues to support learning and growth. Doug Silsbee provides many sample dialogues of each Voice, and also provides many exercises to self-coach and self observe oneself with increased awareness and mindfulness.

The exercises are very thought provoking and I recommend any coaches that purchase the book to do the exercises mindfully. This way they will have a powerful learning experience.

Doug Silsbee, with his Buddhist training, is perhaps one of the most experienced master teachers in the art of mindfulness applied to coaching. The book is full of wisdom and practical knowledge. Highly recommended.

In The Mindful Coach, Doug Silsbee marries mindfulness wisdom with the seven roles employed to grow others. This is an insightful, practical, beautifully written and important guidebook for today’s coaches and leaders. Whether you are a professional coach, or coaching is among your many job duties as a leader/manager/supervisor, you will find Silsbee’s guidance will open new paths for your own development and your development strategies with others. By first exploring and defining coaching, mindfulness and service, the author then opens the conversation to how those manifest in the seven roles for helping people grow: the master, partner, investigator, reflector, teacher, guide and contractor. Full of sample dialogues, exercises, “pitfalls and guidelines,” Silsbee provides the reader the tools to continue growing as a mindful coach. The Mindful Coach is a reference every professional coach or “leader/coach” should have, and refer to again and again.

When I took my training in Executive Coaching, there were a number of dilemmas but I decided to go with the flow. However, as I continued practicing the prescribed models, the dilemmas grew stronger rather then going away. In fact, the dilemmas started taking the shape of conflicts with my previous studies of Life Coaching.

Then one fine day, I came across this book. It not only busted all my dilemmas but it gave me path to a holistic approach. Which I always believed in and wanted to follow! However, the prescribed Executive Coaching formulas said otherwise? This book completely aligned with the teachings of Life Coaching and gave me a complete and effective approach towards Coaching.

I can't thank Doug enough, for he has reinforced my concepts of Wisdom. I can confidently say that now I can be an effective Coach in all aspects of Coaching.

Thanks Doug for this simple yet profound work!

This a very good resource for those interested in getting a taste of what developmental coaching is about. The author does a very good job of describing key considerations in initiating a coaching relationship, and explaining the seven roles a coach takes on in a coaching engagement. This book can serve as a great book club material with your coaching colleagues. Silsbee does a great job of helping readers visualize some of the mindfulness concepts such as attachments and aversions. This book can also be a good resource for someone interested in engaging a coach, and want to figure out what to look for in a good coach. It has some useful exercises for those interested in self coaching or for those who want to "get their feet wet" before seriously considering coaching as a profession.

Bought this for a class for my MBA program. Was probably the most useful book I have read in the program and really made me want to help myself to grow in my leadership role and find a good mentor.

Great book for anyone wanting to grow relationships skills, and especially if already trained in coaching, advising, or mentoring. The applications to the work place for leaders at any level are also a bonus in this in-depth personal and professional development resource. Exercises to help with the concepts provide real-time, immediate benefits to moving me closer to being more aware of how I am experiencing and living in the moment. Looking forward to going deeper with Presence-based Coaching!

This book will help you understand how to serve your coaching clients not do what you always do. Learning these voices helps you hear what clients are really saying and be able to provide what serves the client. Mastering these voices breaks you out of your habitual ways of coaching.
Overuse of a voice is a habit that is about us as coaches, not the client. Marilyn Sutherland

This is exactly what the title already promised. I am sure that every coach should read this. Why? Because the ability to be there fully for your client isn't a skill that just developes without practise. You need a lot of being there before it's possible in every situation.
