He was one of the brightest stars in Hollywood, a hard-charging actor whose intensity on the screen was mirrored in his personal life. As Kirk Douglas grew older, he became less impetuous and more reflective. In this poignant and inspiring new memoir, Douglas contemplates what life is all about, weighing current events from his frame of mind at ninety while summoning the passions of his younger days.

Kirk Douglas was a born storyteller, and throughout Let's Face It he tells wonderful tales and shares favorite jokes and hard-won insights. In the book, he explores the mixed blessings of growing older and looks back at his childhood, his young adulthood, and his storied, glamorous, and colorful life and career in Hollywood. He tells delightful stories of the making of such films as Spartacus, Lust for Life, Champion, The Bad and the Beautiful, and many others. He includes anecdotes about his friends Frank Sinatra, Burt Lancaster, Lauren Bacall, Ronald Reagan, Ava Gardner, Henry Kissinger, Fred Astaire, Yul Brynner, John Wayne, and Johnny Cash. He reveals the secrets that kept him and his wife, Anne, happily married for more than five decades, and talks fondly and movingly of times spent with his sons, Michael, Peter, Eric, and Joel, and his grandchildren.

Douglas's life was filled with pain as well as joy. In Let's Face It, he writes frankly for the first time about the tragic death of his son Eric from a drug overdose at age forty-five. Douglas tells what it was like to recover from several near-death episodes, including a helicopter crash, a stroke, and a cardiac event. He writes of his sadness that many of his closest friends are no longer with us; the book includes many moving stories such as one about a regular poker game at Frank Sinatra's house at which he and Anne were fixtures along with Gregory Peck, Jack Lemmon, and their wives. Though many of the players are gone, the game continues to this day.

In Let's Face It, Douglas reflects on how his Jewish faith became more and more important to him over the years. He offers strong opinions on everything from anti-Semitism to corporate greed, from racism to Hurricane Katrina, and from the war in Iraq to the situation in Israel. He writes about the importance in his life of the need to improve education for all children and about how we need to care more about the world and less about ourselves.

A must-read for every fan, this engrossing memoir provides an indelible self-portrait of a great star - while sharing the wit and wisdom Kirk Douglas accumulated over a lifetime.

Kirk, you are the best and you are very very lucky to have a family that loves you and cherishes you and the two Kirk's will never forget your talks with them.

This book is a must to read. Mr. Douglas is a very modest man. The love for his wife Ann and the love for all his Children and Grandchildren makes you want to cry. It is so beautifully written and so very true. In an era that most Hollywood marriages end with a drop of a hat, their love never died. It is a true love story of an American Actor. We should all takes lessons from them.
Keep up the good work Mr. Douglas you are the BEST!!!!

If i could give this book 100stars it still would not be enough.I am so exhausted with emotion I know I won't be able to give this book justice, so before I go on I must say YOU MUST,MUST READ THIS BOOK AND THEN GIVE IT TO ALL THE LOVED ONES IN YOUR LIFE,after you read it you will know why. This man/actor/icon is so much more. I am 61 years old and after reading this book I can now say and feel I know more about love, life, and the importance of life than ever before and all from this 90yr old profit. I say this with the utmost respect to all the profits we have carried in our hearts and minds. Your going to have to add Mr Douglas to that list. I will but this book along side my bible and refer to it at God's direction because I know he has given it to me at this time in my life, suffering from and incurable disease as a additional tool to use and guide me to never give up. I know this is a very unusual review but I hope that the message is clear to those who ever hesitated to pick up this book. God bless you Mr.Douglas and may your family hold tight to the gift they have been given. NAMASTE

This is a surprisingly well written biography by an actor whom we thought was only a pretty face. He tells us some inside facts of his thoughts, his life and marriage and how he has grown and changed. The tittle says it all and then he fleshes it out. I'm giving this book to a lifelong friend who was a huge fan of Kirk Douglas 50-60 years ago.

After making so many wonderful movies, Mr Douglas has written a lot of books as well - maybe something like 10 or 12. I've read at least 3 or 4 of his books now. But by the time you read this one, you realize he had no shortage of ego. Now we all have egos, but sometimes you need to put a lid on it. At least for awhile. That's one thing Mr Douglas could never master. And I think he gives himself way too much credit on breaking the blacklist for writers and directors in Hollywood. But hey. Forget it. It's Hollywood...

I have loved each and every book , that was written by Kirk Douglas, not because he was an actor, but because of the subject matter. I love his sense of humor even at his own expense. His love for his family is palpable. I am very glad that I had the opportunity to read it.

I really enjoy Mr. Douglas' writing. He he a flair for poetry. Then the book becomes very Jewish. I have no problem with holidays. But then it is too much information. I am glad he lived a long life . He loves his family and worries about his grandchildren. We all make mistakes along the way in life...our children never fully understand our good and bad choices. There are no reruns in life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Man
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 24, 2020
I'd always liked Kirk Douglas as an actor. Now having read 'Let's Face It' I leaned about the man as I liked what I read. Kirk Douglas was old Holywood and an intelligent and sensitive man which I suppose was a rarity in tinsel town. Next time I see him in a film I shall watch him with a different perspective. A good actor, a good man. I wish I had met him. But ill do the next best thing and get his first autobiography.

4.0 out of 5 stars He was Spartacus !
Reviewed in Japan on April 16, 2009
A slim tome of some remembrances by Douglas of his life past and present. He is still quite lucid at 92 and you can feel his pain as he waxes philosophical about his mortality and of the many others who have passed before him. He says this is his last book but it reads more like a blog so I wouldn't be surprised if he had another one in him. He is one of the last living legends of the silver screen so catch this book while the old lion is still alive and it will be all that more rewarding knowing he is still around.
