@KeepDiggingWatson Why are the lights at 221 Baker Street so damn bright in the morning? Why does Watson talk so loud? Elementary, my dear STFU!

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh in 1859 and died in 1930. Within those years was crowded a variety of activity and creative work that made him an international figure and inspired the French to give him the epithet 'the good giant'. He was the nephew of 'Dickie Doyle' the artist, and was educated at Stonyhurst, and later studied medicine at Edinburgh University, where the methods of diagnosis of one of the professors provided the idea for the methods of deduction used by Sherlock Holmes.

He set up as a doctor at Southsea and it was while waiting for patients that he began to write. His growing success as an author enabled him to give up his practice and turn his attention to other subjects. He was a passionate advocate of many causes, ranging from divorce law reform and the Channel Tunnel to the issuing of inflatable life-jackets to sailors. He also campaigned to prove the innocence of individuals, and his work on the Edjalji case was instrumental in the introduction of the Court of Criminal Appeal. He was a volunteer physician in the Boer War and later in life became a convert to spiritualism.

His greatest achievement was, of course, his creation of Sherlock Holmes, who soon attained international status and constantly distracted him from his other work; at one time Conan Doyle killed him but was obliged by public protest to restore him to life. And in his creation of Dr Watson, Holmes's companion in adventure and chronicler, Conan Doyle produced not only a perfect foil for Holmes but also one of the most famous narrators in fiction. Penguin publish all the books about the great detective, A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The Valley of Fear, His Last Bow, The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, The Uncollected Sherlock Holmes and The Penguin Complete Sherlock Holmes.

So many detective novels. But only one name has ever become a term to describe a deductive genius, and with good reason. Sherlock Holmes is quite within the realm of the believable, yet is is thrilling and gripping enough to capture the attention of a young man who prefers fantasy and magic to realistic fiction. (I refer to myself, of course.)
If you are expecting action-packed fights, then urn away, for the focus of this series is the thrill of the hunt and the duel of minds. (Though there is more than a fair share of action and peril.) Holmes is a wonderfully engaging character, and one can almost feel his charisma through the pages as he hunts down the most elusive and dangerous criminals and unravels the most baffling mysteries.
Of course, Hokes himself would dislike the poetic praise I give him. So come and take a read for yourself, look at the world with eyes wide open, and see the legacy of whom I can say without exaggeration is the greatest literary detective of all time. (My apologies to Hercule Poirot.)

Sherlock Holmes stories hold up well. If you like your mystery set in old London WAY before technology and CSI , then you can't beat these.
Sherlock is cold and calculating. Brilliant and Perceptive.
These are fun and have withstood the test of time.
Not to mention that for All of the Sherlock Holmes short stories and full length books herein , this Very Inexpensive.

Reading Sherlock Holmes was like being part of history. The detail, the style of writing, and the occasional humor was delightful. A must read for anyone interested in suspense and drama.

I have all of the Sherlock Holmes stories in hardbound and read them years ago. Since I recently started using my Windows phone as a reader I decided to reread Sherlock Holmes. I really enjoy the camaraderie between Holmes and Watson. And, although I do not engage in all of their rituals, there's a comfortable feeling about their having a pipe or afternoon tea. Reading these stories provides a great escape from the mundane or the pressures of life. I will say, however, that after the death and fan driven resurrection of Holmes, Conan Doyle drifted a bit much into the macabre. The stories are still very engaging, though. Now, in regard to this particular Kindle edition, it is somewhat lacking. Hence the reason for only four stars. I have yet to complete them but have noticed some omissions. Or, possibly some misplaced text. It's difficult to tell if a line or even a page has been left out or misplaced. None of the important information has been left out so the stories retain their continuity. But, it is a bit annoying when it happens. I suppose I could check my paper copy to see what actually happened but it's not worth the effort. I can't really complain given that I paid only .99 for the book. It is well worth the money.

Loved this series. Many short stories so I could read a whole story in a short sitting. Every story had an interesting twist. After he solves the each mystery, it appears to be so obvious. But not so much while you're reading them.

5.0 out of 5 stars BBC Radio 4 Sherlocl holmes

The BBC radio Radio Four Holmes Series with Clive Merrison as Holmes and Michael Williams/Andrew Sachs as Watson is currently the prime representation of Holmes and Watson and their world. In toto, they cover all 56 short stories and 4 long novels penned by Watson and Doyle. They are also well on their way to giving us many of the untold tales mentioned in the canon.
These radio dramas give Watson's actual ideas and words as well as sticking to the original plots and spirit of the actual tales. No other medium or means of presentation has been able to give us the complete Holmes and Watson, enabling us to experience them as we actually see and hear them in our own heart of hearts.
The tales given here are a great selection to whet any entusiast's immagination. I doubt if you'll be able to stop at this one purchase. If you've read this far, you will have to go on to comlete the entire collection.

These are the best radio dramatisations of sir arthur conan doyles stories. I was surprised to find that these cds were not in a cd case instead they are in a crap cardboard box with the cds in a cardboard sleeve. The quality of the packaging is not great and wont last a crack taking the cds in and out of the sleeves. I hope that the other bbc audio series is not going to be made like this because its a crap idea. I dont know if its audioGO uk or the original manufactures who have made this change but its a bad move. It does not affect the superb dramas and thats why i am still giving it a five star rating.
