Purchase options and add-ons
“The combined elements of historical fiction, romance, and mystery in this fog-enshrouded London puzzler will appeal to fans of Anne Perry.”—Booklist
It’s 1811, and the threat of revolution haunts the upper classes of King George III’s England. Then the body of a beautiful young woman is found savagely murdered on the altar steps of an ancient church near Westminster Abbey. A dueling pistol discovered at the scene and the damning testimony of a witness both point to one man: Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, a brilliant young nobleman shattered by his experiences in the Napoleonic Wars.
Now a fugitive running for his life, Sebastian calls upon his skill as an officer during the war to catch the killer and prove his own innocence. In the process, he accumulates a band of unlikely allies, including the enigmatic beauty Kat Boleyn, who broke Sebastian’s heart years ago. In Sebastian’s world of intrigue and espionage, nothing is as it seems, yet the truth may hold the key to the future of the British monarchy, as well as to Sebastian’s own salvation....

There was more than meets the eye of our murder victim. With a web of tangles of deceit and lies, encompassing French spies, sexual peccadilloes, blackmail which lead to murder. Sebastian must untangle the web of lies. Where the murderer could prove closer to home.
While Sebastian is in custody, he ends up being in the middle of a scuffle with the arresting constables. Unfortunately, one constable attacking & stabbing the other. Sebastian being blamed for that attack as well. He escapes determined to find the true murderer for this horrific crime.
Now a fugitive running for his life, Sebastian uses his skill as an agent from the Napoleonic Wars to catch the killer & prove his own innocence.
While finding the truth, secrets & lies about Rachel York's life, he accumulates a band of allies, including the woman he loved & wanted to marry. The enigmatic beauty Kat Boleyn, who broke Sebastian's heart years ago. Tom a preteen who attempts to pick pocket him. His friend & colleague from the war, Dr. Paul Gibson.
Sebastian's world of intrigue & espionage, nothing is as it seems. Though, the truth could hold the key to the future of the British monarchy. Along with Sebastian's own salvation.
This novel has well thought out characters. A fast pace plot, with twists & turns you don't expect. The mystery, as intrigue, a seedy spy mystery. Where you sympathize with the characters in the plot.
Let's not forget the typical, resentment with siblings over privilege based on their sex, & what society expects them to follow.
I cannot wait to read the next chapter in this series.
I definitely recommend this series for mystery lovers and Regency aficionados. Even though there is more violence and death than is usual in a cozy mystery, I still think cozy mystery fans would enjoy this series except for book 12 which was too dark for my taste. Also, book 3 might not be enjoyed by some with more delicate sensibilities.
I gave this book 4 stars because this series isn’t quite as good as my two favorite Regency mystery series by Andrea Penrose (Lady Arianna mysteries and the Wrexford and Sloane mysteries). Also, this series is more graphic and gory. I feel there is some gratuitous violence in each of the books which I think could easily have been excluded without lessening the plot or intrigue.
The writing and plot are good, dialogue and characters believable. There is suspense, danger, intrigue, villains, mystery and romance all reliably portrayed in the Regency period. There is the dashing, yet reluctant, hero with the painful, unresolved past. The remaining cast of recurring characters as well as story-specific characters are all well-drawn. The author writes such that the reader can actually visualize the goings-on as if they were watching a movie.
This hero, Sebastian, is finely drawn and not in the least cliched. He is a unique man with a unique story. The hero's dangerous endeavor is tempered by his ingenuity, intelligence, compassion and love, as well as some extraordinary gifts of vision and hearing, apparently inherited, along with yellow eyes. As the author notes in an Epilogue, these traits actual exist in some Welsh families. These traits, of course, serve him well as an early warning system when danger is afoot. This nobleman, damaged by war and the loss of love, rescues himself from false accusations of murder and in so doing discovers an outlet for his need for redemption and justice.
There is a passionate love interest, lots of political intrigue and a fair amount of Regency-era history. I love gleaning bits of history that I wouldn’t come across otherwise.
I definitely recommend this book and the series through book 11.

Despite being a massive bookworm, I've never binge-read a series -- or even part of a series -- before, but the Sebastian St Cyr series is so good that I just COULDN'T tear myself away to read any other kind of book for a long, long time.
What Angels Fear is still my favourite of all. Though the plotting is excellent, what really makes this book (and series) special is the characters. Especially Sebastian. You'll like him. You just will. He's brilliant and badass, but also humorous and kind. And for the reader, he's captivating and intriguing. I highly recommend that you meet him.
Due to his position in society, Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, is at liberty to move freely through society, enabling the reader a glimpse of the living circumstances of the privileged few as well as the underprivileged many. Devlin is a broken yet intriguing man, a cleverly crafted character whose secrets make him both elusive and fascinating.
The murders are always complex and you do have to wait until the end to know 'hoo dun it'.
I like that each story can stand alone, but there is a connection that runs through them all so one can enjoy them as a series.
Well worth reading.
