According to my thirteen-year-old son, every superhero has an origin. My origin is a little embarrassing. I wasn’t put into a rocket and sent to Earth by my parents. I wasn’t bitten by a radioactive spider. No, I was merely the innocent victim of a Horrible Swiffer Accident.…

Strange things are happening to divorced mother of two Birdie Lee since the Horrible Swiffer Accident. She can sense danger (for example, a carload of speeding teenagers not wearing their seat belts) and spring into action with superhuman speed. She can find out what her daughter is up to on the Internet without even having to snoop. And she’s got cleaning powers ordinary women can only dream of.…

Warm, witty, and full of heart, Confessions of Super Mom is the tale of a woman who dares to take a stand against everything from stubborn stains to smug exs to corporate CEOs—and winds up defeating evil in some very unexpected ways.

Hailing from the Hoosier state (where I grew up in the shadow of the Indianapolis 500 racetrack), I'm a late bloomer who is just now figuring out what I want to be when I grow up. Having tried my hand at telemarketing, candy striping for a nursing home and acting under my maiden name, Melanie Miller (Most Academy Award-Worthy Performance: The title role, complete with bear costume, in the gut-wrenching exploration of good touch/bad touch entitled "What's the Matter, Little Bear?"), I put everything on hold in order to marry, have two children, and spend my time making sure they didn't stick their fingers in electrical sockets. (Both the husband, and the children.) I put in a brave couple of years with the PTA, driving my sons to soccer practices, track meets and orthodontist appointments. In short, I was in training to become Super Mom.

At an age when many women throw themselves back into their careers after raising their children, I looked around and realized I never had one in the first place. So I turned to the one thing I did know: Books. So I wrote one. It stank. I buried it out in my backyard, next to the compost heap. I wrote another book. It didn't stink quite so much; still, nobody wanted to publish it. I wrote another book. It stank the least of all, and led to my current, wonderful literary agent, but still it went unpublished. Then I wrote CONFESSIONS OF SUPER MOM. So far, nobody has said that it stinks. In fact, so many people like it that I wrote the sequel, to be published in 2007. And finally, at long last, I have a career. (And old men in nursing homes everywhere breathe a huge sigh of relief.)

Melanie Hauser flies onto the lit scene with a great book--with a great hook. Through the story of Birdie Lee, who gets Swiffered into superhero-dom, is reflected the enormous power of everyday moms--especially single mothers who still manage to be there for their kids while saving the rest of humanity. There's something for every reader here: speeding-bullet plot, sharp one-liners, a mush-resistant love story. And Hauser portrays Birdie with such genuineness that you begin to wonder if the author has her own secret identity. One not-so-secret thing: this is a great book.

(P.S. I'm male!)

After a cleaning accident single mother of two teenagers becomes infused with superpowers...very unique superpowers. Her powers seem to stem from her core being which is being a mother. With her abilities, she learns about a scam that is directed to hurt children and make an evil corporation money.

Confessions of supermom is a very uniquely written book. It is a quick and fun read. As I was reading it I could see it as a movie. In fact, I pictured Drew Barrymore as Supermom, Birdie. She’s cute, she’s strong and loveable.

Some of Birdie’s story is a little cheesy...but I like cheese. The more cheese the better for me.

I think this series deserves more reads. Many of you may not know that historical fiction author Melanie Benjamin is the same author who wrote this supermom series. The similarities are that she writes people and stories that are so real and hard to believe that she is writing fiction. The sequel to this is sitting on my shelf waiting to be read

Funny, adorable, yet touching and poignant, this wonderful whimsical piece of printed entertainment is a prime example of realistic fantasy -- combining fantasy elements with everyday occurrences. Love the pop-culture and superhero references, and Our Heroine's romance with a handsome PTA dad. I'd give it 10 stars if I could and am hoping for a sequel.

The author of "Confessions of a Super Mom" does have talent and should keep writing. This book is fun, in parts, and, on occasion, is delightfully original. What mom wouldn't want the power to scare kids straight with her "super mom" gaze? However, Birdie, the protagonist, was tiresome. She lacked the sarcastic edge and witty comebacks that would have made her a more interesting or likeable heroine. She was... boring. I gave up reading when I realized I didn't care how the book ended. While I don't think this book should be "buried in the compost heap", as the author says she did with her first manuscripts, I do think it needs more work. I think this author can produce a funny show-stopping book. "Confessions" is a step in the right direction but isn't the destination.

I picked this book up because of the title. Goodness knows, I feel like I'm supposed to be a superhero most days (I'm the mother of four).

The main character Birdie (AKA Super Mom) is a heroine for women everywhere. Super Mom and her alter ego, the mild-mannered supermarket cashier Birdie Lee, are portrayed with wit and humor. The snappy dialogue is irresistible!

Super Mom's sidekick is her son Martin, who helps her build her superhero costume. Super Mom's daughter Kelly is a believable teen, and Super Mom's relationship with her best friend Carrie is a fascinating glimpse at the ups and downs of our closest friendships. There's a wonderful romance in the book too, and a delightfully dark archnemesis, but I won't spoil the plot for you!

For all those women who wish they were superheroes, and sometimes feel they ARE unrecognized superheroes, check out this novel.

Confessions of A Super Mom is the story of a divorced mother who gains distinctly paternal superpowers after a cleaning accident. The story is fun and upbeat, with a lot of honestly and warmth. I liked that Birdie's pre-teen son became her confidant--believable or not, it was adorable. Her crime-fighting style was motherly in a way that was funny but also compassionate, something we need to see more of. The story could have been paced a little better; at times it felt a bit slow. It might not have been "action-packed" in the usual superhero sense. But the superhero genre is flexible, inclusive of many other subgenres. It's only fitting that it include the lives of parents, the real superheroes of the world.

Huge thanks to Melanie Lynne Hauser for giving us moms what we deserve--our very own super hero. Smart, funny and surprisingly poignant, CONFESSIONS OF SUPER MOM introduces us to divorced mother Birdie Lee, who, after a ghastly Swiffer accident, discovers that there's no mess too huge, no child too unruly for her to conquer. But Birdie's powers don't stop there, and before the book is through, she's thwarted evil and saved the children of her town from corporate greed gone mad. Along the way, she reconnects with her teenage children and even finds the love she deserves. This story has enough heart and humor for any book-loving mom.

I picked this book up because of the cover and because my daughter has been obsessed with superheros her whole life. The story is a page-turner, tugging at themes that, as parents, we all struggle through--negotiating our consumer oriented, media saturated world, family dynamics etc. The tongue-in-cheek, slighty "noir" style of writing increases the sensation that such a story really could happen to you, if only certain things fell into place.

It was a wonderful, uplifting fun read that I have been recommending to everyone. I am also really hoping for a sequel!
