I liked that there wasn't a lot of blood and guts as is found in other Civil War stories. I like that it showed the kindness of General W.T. Sherman and like the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during WWII that sometimes a "scorched earth" policy can stop a war. I've read dozens and dozens of John Jake's books and have learned something about history from everyone. I read "Charleston" and then spent our honeymoon in Charleston even though were were from California. This is a nice Christmas story that can be read at any time.

a "feel Good Book" below his usual level for historical novels....young people would enjoy how Christ's love shines through even in the Civil War...

I have been a John Jakes fan since the 1980s. He never disappoints. After having visited Savannah last year, I could see in my minds eye how beautiful it would have been then. War is hell and for the children even worse. Always remember there is good and bad on both sides.

Expecting an in-depth comprehensive story about the fall of Savannah in 1864, I was surprised in a positive way to read a more heartwarming story about softer human aspects of the event wrapped around a family's tragic story and some memorable characters

I had read Charleston before this. I like this one better than Charleston. The character here get more filled out. As always Jakes is a great way to increase your historical knowledge in a pleasant manner. I have read so many of his books. I'm always delighted.

I was very happy with this book. I was unable to put it down once I'd started reading it. I have read all John Jakes' books in the past and loved every one of them. Historically accurate and beautifully written, I could easily imagine myself in the thick of the American Civil War and felt for the characters involved. I will be keeping this on my Kindle and will be reading it again.

I have read several John Jakes novels and thoroughly enjoyed each one but I found this one hard to get into the story. It is as well researched as all his other civil war books but somehow it did not gel for me!
