Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Damaris Myddleton thought she had purchased herself a titled husband, but it seems that the Marquess of Ashart prefers another's beauty to Damaris' money. Vowing to find an even better catch, Damaris enlists the help of Octavius Fitzroger, the marquess' friend, and begins plotting the next move in her hunt for a highborn spouse. Although Damaris can't deny that she is tempted by the sinfully handsome Octavius, he is unsuitable, lacking possessions and power and harboring a dark secret. It is only when Damaris is in danger that she discovers the coolly competent Mr. Fitzroger has other, more desirable qualities. In her final sublime installment in her Malloren series, RITA Award-winning Beverley picks up things shortly after Winter Fire (2003) as she pairs up another of her clever, bold heroines with another of her wickedly irresistible heroes. Expertly laced with danger and skillfully sweetened with sensuality, A Most Unsuitable Man is a most captivating romance. John Charles

Jo Beverley is one of today's top authors of historical romance, and one of only twelve members of the Romance Writers of America Hall of Fame. She sets her bestselling novels in her native England, and has a degree in English history.

Her 40 novels have won just about all the awards in romance , including 5 RITA awards, the top award in romance, and 2 career achievement awards from Romantic Times. Reviews regularly include words like masterful, thrilling, and even sublime.

She writes historical romance novels and novellas set in her native England in the middle ages, the Georgian period, and the Regency, often with mystery and adventure elements, and sometimes with a little magic. Readers have been known to argue about which of her main series is best --the Malloren series, set in the 1760s, or the Company of Rogues books, set in the Regency. The Company of Rogues series begins with An Arranged Marriage. The Malloren series begins with My Lady Notorious. Most of her novels can be enjoyed as stand-alones.

Love the main characters. Satisfied my need for chills and cheers. The heroine is down to earth and very human. The hero is strong and sharp and kind. Enjoyed it immensely.

Georgian romance with sex. This book is actually part 2, following "Winter Fire".

Damaris has humiliated herself at Rothgar's Christmas gathering & decides to make a run for it. Ash's friend, Fitz stops her & helps her out. Putting herself under Rothgar's protection, she's told she has to make friends with Genova & accompany her & Ash to Ash's country house. Along the way, there's an attempt on her life.
Damaris is selfish & bitchy, but she's also intelligent & interesting. She does her best to move on from her disappointment with Ash & decides Fitz is a better man to give her love to. Fitz is a good hero & this is a satisfying continuation of the story.

Jo Beverley's Malloren World and her Company of Rogues are two of my most favorite series. It's great when the hot guys are also the nice guys, who occasionally don't even know they're nice. The women in both these series are strong. Some are beautiful, some are not. All are clever and righteous. No spoilers here, but Fitz and Damaris are fun, but he's got troubles and is not free to be the man he wants her to have. Ms. Beverley's character have it all, or very nearly, on the surface. She gets underneath the gloss and shows us their hearts desires. She then puts them through their paces until they open themselves up to achieve the happiness they truly want and need. Fitz and Damaris' story is well worth the read.

In which some of her imaginings/contrivances are a bit too contrived, and even repetitive, IMO. But Fitz and Damaris evolve and spar quite entertainingly, even so. I wish her Autumn Sunset dress were pictured in color! And I kept imagining Michelangelo's "David" as Fitz....

This is the first book I have read by Jo Beverly and I really enjoyed it. I like the fact that there were two mysteries to solve - even though they were not too hard to figure out. Also, Great sexual tension between the main characters! Plus I loved the way Damaris and Fitz supported each other throughout the story. I can't wait to read another novel by this author.

This story tells of the final happy ending for Demaris Myddleton, the heiress who ended up NOT marrying the Marquess of Ashart in Winter Fire. Her story involves mayhem, attempted murder, and the resurrection of the good name of a ne'er-do-well. But, as said before, it ends happily. Set in the early reign of George III.

This whole series set during Georgian Period of English Rule are full of strong male and female characters and the scenarios are very entertaining.

I didn't find this up to Jo's usual standard - too many characters still being introduced well into the story, and the dialogue seemed full of non sequiturs. Perhaps I was too tired when I was reading it?? I cannot in all conscience recommend this book to other readers.
