Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Rentsch, a founding member of the Transition Network (a national community of women over 50 considering retirement), has extensively interviewed women approaching retirement, finding that they do so differently than men; their planning often leads to reflection and reassessment of who they are and what they want to do. Baby boomer women gained unprecedented recognition in their careers, with greater choices than earlier generations of women, and they will reshape the concept of retirement. Women may continue to work or find other ways to stay sharp and involved, intellectually and emotionally at the top of their game. Although our culture worships youth, the author views boomers’ large numbers as a source of power, and each individual will choose to be “an old fussbudget or youthful and vibrant.” Rentsch acknowledges that health plays an important role in retirement years, as do economic limitations and family demands. Nevertheless, retirement choices are available for many women, and this thoughtful, well-researched book will inspire a broad range of library patrons. --Mary Whaley

Review

Whereas parents before aspired to the ideal of completely escaping the work world for a warmer climate, baby boomers are developing new models for their "golden years." Public relations professional Rentsch is a founding member of the Transition Network, a national organization for women focused on retirement transition issues. Drawing on research and interviews, she explores a range of topics, from preparing for and deciding when to retire to overcoming self-defeating stereotypes about aging women and uplifting ideas about a meaningful retirement. Each chapter presents frank discussions, inventories and checklists, and case studies of real women's lives. Interpersonal topics like coordinating retirement with a spouse and cultivating friendships as one ages are also covered... This insightful book reinforces the idea that retirement can be transformative and even "cool."

Near the end of the movie, Shawshank Redemption, "Red" Redding the narrator (Morgan Freeman) has been paroled and is bagging groceries at a store. In one scene, he asks permission to go to the bathroom. The manager takes him aside and explains that he doesn't need to ask, he can just go if he needs to. "Red" reflects that after years of asking to go to the bathroom that he can't squeeze a drop without permission.

I think of that scene as I am contemplating retirement because I am only now seeing the type of deep-seated conditioning I have absorbed from 30+ years of work. Every profession has those cultural rules. Maybe it's how to dress; what your office or work space should and should not look like. If you are an attorney wanting to make partner, how many billable hours should you log? Can you skip the CEO's annual fund-raiser because it 's desperately boring? In every retiree lies the equivalent of "Red" and his need to ask permission to pee, even when it's no longer required.

Among the thousands of books on financial planning for retirement and now the emerging genre of "third age" and "encore careers," this book is well worth reading--and probably first--if you are anticipating or coping with retirement. As a woman who pioneered into a male-dominated profession decades ago, I could especially relate to many of the anecdotes. There was an extra helping of conditioning that came from making the climb to success with few female mentors and peers. Both femininity and creativity were supressed as a consequence of my profession. This is the first book I've read that openly acknowledges and addresses the transitional needs of women, particularly those pioneers.

Before one can plan her next stage of life, she must fully explore who she is and what part her ending career plays in that composition. If I had made retirement choices based on who I thought I was just a few years ago, I doubt that I would have been happy. I have to face that some of who I am is not really my choice, not my true values. It is the conditioning of decades of work that I accepted as a norm. Am I going to feel guilty if I am not at my desk by 8am productively cranking out work? How much of the structure to which I'm attached is other people's rules and expectations? This book explores the needs that work filled.

In the movie, Brooks was another paroled prisoner. But after a lifetime in prison, he couldn't adapt to freedom and hung himself. There are those retirees that can't cope with what looks like empty days stretching to the grave. This books looks at a variety of options of transitioning to retirement and preparing mentally and emotionally. Maybe we might feel like jumping on a bus to Zihuatanejo. This book looks at how to find the thing or things that will make life meaningful, even if you try many different avenues and find meaning in unexpected ways.

In the history of mankind, our generation is unique and lucky. Many of us will have the health and finances to live 20-30 years however we want. In the movie, "Red" describes the excitement and fear he's feeling as he's riding the bus to a new life. Doing what you want and not what society or other people's expectations dictate. Doesn't that feel wicked? But exciting. Some of us escape prison with a well orchestrated plan. Some of us just jump parole. But no doubt about it, we have to break free of whatever incarceration we were experiencing.

Pretty stilted writing style.

The title of this book compliments the contents and provides you with the ability to exhale when your job is eliminated at 52 years old!

It reminds you that life is not always about working full-time. There are so many other things that bring pleasure and security. I bought this book along with "How to Retire Happy, Wild, and Free" and reading both of them brought me a whole new perspective. I feel blessed to have been given the opportunity to retire early and not worry about the 9 to 5 druggery or the daily humilations we all feel in the workplace. Come to think about it the work place in America is one of the most overrated institutions we have. Breaking free (even if you were set free) is worth every second!

I would recommend this to anyone who is thinking of retirement. Remembering attitude is everything!

Book was written for executive women who are looking at retirement. Suggested getting into consulting work. Not the average working woman. So was disappointed.

Smart women Don't Retire They Break Free is a insightful book that has been a great tool in planning retirement.

Gail Rentch and the transition network nailed it with, "SMART WOMEN DON"T RETIRE THEY BREAK FREE". This book is pure Platinum, the absolute benchmark by which all Boomer retirement books will be measured. I was, "Walking a mile in female high heels",doing research on my second retirement book, THE RETIRED FEMALE'S RE-EMANCIPATION, when I ran across this jewel. I threw in the towel on writing my new book at least a dozen times as I read the next chapter. I knew beyond any doubt that I couldn't in another 83 years write a book of this stature. But being a stubborn old Bear I decided to slough on. Mendell R. Martin author of THE CERTIFICATION OF THE RETIRED MALE. Available at the Amazon Kindle Store.

This book was stolen from a library, I was suspicious the minute I opened it, it had a clear library type cover, a bar code on the back was crossed off with a magic marker, there was a white sticker at the base of the spine that covers, I imagine, the dewey decimal numbers. Sure enough opening it reveals it is from " Fort Collins Regional Library District. i love Amazon, but you better vet your vendors more carefully!!!!! I can add photos documenting this at a later date.

Remarkable book!! It gets into the hearts of women of a certain age who are casting about for a way not only to be happy, but to make a difference in the world they find themselves in. The stories of other women in similar circumstances stir the imagination and help towards finding what can fulfill their lives.
