King's papers are being amassed in 14 volumes whose heft and exhaustive coverage don't encourage casual reading. Two editors of that project offer a more manageable book, a set of 11 of King's most frequently preached sermons. They are separately introduced by fellow preachers, all but one of whom (Archbishop Desmond Tutu) knew him, and each appears in a version that was particularly well received (most are transcriptions of recordings, with spoken congregational interjections--" Yes, sir," "That's right," "Preach" --parenthetically inserted in the text). King was a gifted preacher, his staple themes of God's love and social justice are perennially pertinent, and this is thrilling reading, especially if one can conjure his voice in the mind's ear. The sermons have been sound-bitten nearly to death, of course, and in such a manner as to downplay King's staunch evangelical Christianity. Here it blazes forth; indeed, one sermon ends with a clear altar call. Perhaps there is no better way to become acquainted with this great American than this book affords. Ray Olson

In these sermons Martin Luther King, Jr reveals a man who loved the Church, was dedicated to its mission and learned to love ALL of man from the shepherding of Christ in his life. He understood the importance, the imperative, to all creation that evil be resisted peacefully. Trusting and patiently waiting on justice from God, he knew the vision God had given him on the mountain top, the promised land of peace, might not be his to visit but tried to point it out to all those who'd listen.

When I read these words, We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. As subjects of this mandate, not as black, white, brown or red, not as colors yet as ordinary people. We have trusted authorities as we toiled and built our wonderful country to do the labor of law; somewhere in that endeavor the truth has been mislaid and greed had it's say, now what a mess we have allowed to be made. Daily I listen to the eloquent words of Dr. King from eight inspiring cd's that if you listen with ears and a heart of forgiveness and a true desire to understand , and become a part of the solution, there is a lesson to be learned.

This is the best book I have ever read. It was received the best condition and I can now be a better pastor, preacher, teacher and leader because the sermons of Dr. king. This is a must read anyone who is considering ministry. While the battles that Dr. King fought are no longer around, there are still battles, and he teaches you from his experiences and the gospels how to fight for justice; for peace and for righteousness all while in pursuit of a "United States" of America.

Excellent collection of Martin Luther King, Jr. sermons and when on listens to the actual sermon on YouTube, you get an amazing depth to Mr. King.

Rev. King;s efforts to bring justice to our culture were truly epic. Like all prophets, he was murdered in the end. His sermons are powerful, bringing God's words in a way that all can appreciate. This book will be donated to Morrison-Reeves Library in Richmond, IN. When I researched King in their collection I found that the books were old, out of date, and minimal. Rev, King deserves better. Service, as usual with Amazon, was very good.
