Spanning the careers of two of crime fiction's most esteemed police detectives, these four short mysteries are revelatory episodes in the complex relationship between Dalziel and Pascoe.  In the opening tale, the chilling start of the Dalziel and Pascoe partnership--never before revealed--is cemented by a killer and his shotgun.  In another, the duo investigates the fate of a woman no one has seen for a year, except her brother, who claims he is being haunted by her ghost.  Then the detectives keep vigil at an isolated farmhouse, waiting to see what is making things go bump in the night.  Finally, a jump in time to the year 2012, and the partners' last case: the first man murdered on the moon.  Set against Yorkshire's brooding landscape, Asking for the Moon shows the full spectrum of Dalziel's eccentric brilliance, the evolution of Pascoe's professionalism, the zenith of Reginald Hill's incomparable talent...and the very best British mystery can be.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Reginald Hill has raised the classical British mystery to new heights."
--The New York Times Book Review

"A lot of people write classic detective stories, but Reginald Hill is one of the elite few who write classy classics."
--The Baltimore Sun

"The real joy of the Dalziel-Pascoe books is the writing and the characterizations. Mr. Hill has such disparate writers as Trollope, Beerbohm, Sayers and Shaw in his blood."
--The New York Times

This volume contains 4 novellas/short stories. The one where the 2 men first meet shouldn't be missed. The other 3 are good as well.

I am saving this one. Five years from now I will read it again. That means something when you are talking books of this gender.

The alpha and omega of the Dalziel and Pascoe stories. This book of 4 short stories has two from a previous collection - Pascoe's Ghost and Dalziel's Ghost, so I was a bit disappointed to have purchased only two new stories; however, they were worth it ! The first story is the initial meeting - in not very good circumstances - of the characters. It was a treat to see how the relationship started. The last story in the book was written by Mr. Hill on the 20th anniversary of the first book in the series. He said he looked at the fact that 20 years had passed, but not for the characters, so he decided to write a story about what might have happened to them if time was passing at the same rate. He wrote the story in 1990 but set it in the then future of 2010. Space travel has not developed as he predicts, but the story of now Eurofed Commissioner Pascoe and retired Dalziel solving a murder on the moon is quite a neat tale. Well worth getting this book for just those two stories. If you have not read the other two in the previous short story collection ( Pascoe's Ghost and other tales ) they are both quite interesting as well.

I always enjoy Dalziel and Pascoe. Nice little group of stories. A pleasant read.
Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2014
Reginald Hill's dynamic detective duo of the later twentieth century is comprised of Inspector Peter Pascoe and his Superintendent/boss Andrew Dalziel. Dalziel is two-fisted albeit good-hearted, old school, lecherous, hard-drinking, bombastic, fat. Junior partner Pascoe in contrast is the wave of the criminal investigation future: prim, mannerly, politically correct, and formally well-educated. What they unquestionably share besides their odd chemistry, though, is a first rate nose for sleuthing.

You can appreciate the possibilities for them to play off their differences, and over the course of solving twenty-some mysteries the late Mr. Hill (1936-2012) masterfully exploited that potential. What a shame the fictional pair is not so well-known on our side of the pond to allow more readers to admire the interaction.

"Asking For The Moon", a collection of four novellas, may not be a top drawer example of their collaborations. But if not, at least it serves as an excellent introduction. And speaking of introductions, Dalziel's speech is riddled with such a wealth of indiscreet and indecipherable Britspeak, let me offer some British-to-American translations as a public service:

BOG: the lavatory;
KHAZI: ditto;
PUNTER: customer of any commercial business--frequently referring specifically to 'the world's oldest profession';
SCROTE: a total jerk or moron;
SOD: vulgar term for a male;
SPROG: disparaging term for a young child. In more recent years, also applied to a raw military recruit;
WANKER: contemptible person or jerk.

I'd submit a few more of these, but I don't think they'd get past Amazon's well-intentioned censors. (Dalziel would have smirked at my predicament.) Anyway, do look up more of Hill's works. He handles drama and humor equally well, and you won't regret investing the time or the expense.

This is a collection of Dalziel and Pascoe stories. That's pronounced Dee-Ell, to the uninitiated. There are four stories here written between 1979 and 1994.

With any long running series maintaining the same characters, there can be a drop off every now and again of consistency. But with Reginald Hill even if the story is not that great you will always have brilliant dialogue. Andy Dalziel has the best lines in crime fiction, he's rude crude and clever. There is never any drop off in the consistency of his patter.

This collection has early stories through to one that is science fiction but always the verbals, they just make you laugh out loud.

When ever I read one of these novels I always see 'Fat Andy" as played by Warren Clarke in the television series.

Which of course brings me back to Anthony Burgess. Clark played the part of one of Alex's 'Droogs', Dim, in the film adaptation of 'A Clockwork Orange'. I may have mentioned this before but in case you missed it, Anthony Burgess was a genius.

Grab a Reginald Hill anytime, you will not regret it. Even his poorer stories are head and shoulders above anyone writing procedurals today

This collection of short stories is a good introduction to the delightful team of Pascoe and Dalziel. Some of the British (or Yorkshire) slang was beyond me, but it added a lot of color and I was able to get around it easily enough and follow the story without difficulty. This is a good intellectual exercise disguised as entertainment.
