Grand Conversations (Updated Edition): Literature Groups in Action Updated Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 10 ratings

This updated edition of a 1990 classic advocates the use of real books in a classroom context that places children's enjoyment and interpretation of literature at the center. New material includes a foreword by Shelley Harwayne and tributes to the book's influence by Stephanie Harvey, Lester Laminack, Frank Serafini, and Mary Glover. In addition to illuminating the powerful components of a literature-based reading program, the authors provide a number of assessment tools. For use with Grades 2–6.

This is a text that gives pointers on how teachers might have "grand" conversations about literature with their students. In an era where the focus in reading instruction is on isolated skills, this book provides insight into ways in which teachers might engage children in texts so that they don't lose sight of what is important about reading. Further, this text shows the ways in which readers might come to love books and how conversations around responses to text can further comprehension, thus making texts come alive. Although it's an older title, I recommend every teacher read this book.

This book is an absolute delight. Good information and almost reads like poetry at times. Every teacher should own this text.

This is an "oldie but goodie" and the updated version is great. This is a gem of a little book, highly accessible and relevant. If you are looking to implement book clubs and lit discussion circles, this is a great resource. It is brilliant in its simplicity. Highly recommended.
