Hi Readers! Thanks for coming by my author page. I've written all sorts of books - from fantasy about animals to books about science and historical fiction. I’m in that historical fiction zone now with my new series Tangled in Time. The Portal is the first book and it explores what happens when a girl, Rose Ashley, feels trapped in her own time. Newly orphaned she is sent live with her slightly weird grandmother whom she has never met, in a new city and a new school where she encounters three bullies known as The Mean Queens. But shortly she will tumble through time and find herself in the 16th century in the service of Princess Elizabeth. I always wondered when I wrote the Royal Diaries, Elizabeth the Red Rose of Tudor what it would be like to serve royalty rather than to be royalty. This led to Tangled In Time, my first time travel series.

Ezylryb is dead. On his death bed he asks Soren and Coryn to read the three legends of Ga'Hoole. He explains how the legends will teach them unforgettable things he never taught. They will guide King Coryn who is the new king of the great tree in many ways in battle. Obediently, they read the three legends. They begin with their first book: The First Collier.

It is a time long ago in the Northern Kindoms, which were then known as the kingdoms of the Nyrthgar. On the throne are good King Hrath and Queen Siv. But darkness lurks. Hagsfiends(creatures that are half crow and half owl) lurk in the dark parts of the Nyrthgar, hoping to rule it one day.

This is the story of Grank, a male spotted owl who is a good friend of the king and queen. Grank like Coryn, has firesight. Amazed by this wonderful talent he posses, Grank leaves the safe kingdoms of the Nyrthgar and heads to the Beyond to learn more about fire and firesight. He meets a wolf named Fengo, who helps him in work and the study of fire. Grank learns to catch bonke cols and other important things. But even though he sees it through the flames, the hagsfiends are training and prepairing for battle. In a great battle, Hrath is killed and Siv is forced to flee with one of her servants and egg. The hagsfiends take over the Ice Palace where the king and queen ruled. Grank returns to find Siv and take her to safety. Grank finds her but is almost immediatly attacked by hagsfiends. He takes Siv's egg and quickly flees. Siv is trapped and is greatly wounded but survives. Although she survives she does not see her chick grow up. It is a remarkable tale of love and friendship. It is the story of Grank.

At first I thought the book was boring and read the epilogue when I reached chapter 4, but once I got a bit further, I traveled into the book and felt as if I was part of the story. Siv's mate, King Hrath, gets murdered and she has to make a heartbreaking decision. Frank teaches Theo, an eager learner and gizzard resister, to be the first blacksmith. Theo invented battle claws, and Siv survives the attacks from gadfeathers by thinking of her mate and unhatched son.
The book is astonishing and should be read

I bought this book as part of the series for my daughter. She has not quite made it to this book yet, but she is very excited to read the whole set and is reading as often as she can. The movie is also great!

The Guardians of Ga'Hoole is a great series and I think all of those other readers would agree with me.
If you have seen the movie and don't know if they should read the series, then I have the answer. The movie doesn't cover much in the series and it mixes a couple things so I recommend that you read the series and reside if the movie really does follow the series well.

Simply stunning. Just like all of Kathryn Laskey's other books, this swept me off to a different world. It felt great to get away. This is the perfect just-before-you-go-to-sleep book, or on-the-couch-with-a-blanket-and-it's-cold-out book. Once again we have gone into the future beyond humans, where we see the animals we left behind win against all odds things we ourselves cannot accomplish today. In one word this book is wow.
