When Dav Pilkey was a kid, he was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. Dav was so disruptive in class that his teachers made him sit out in the hallway every day. Luckily, Dav loved to draw and make up stories. He spent his time in the hallway creating his own original comic books - the very first adventures of Dog Man and Captain Underpants.

In college, Dav met a teacher who encouraged him to illustrate and write. He won a national competition in 1986 and the prize was the publication of his first book, World War Won. He made many other books before being awarded the 1998 California Young Reader Medal for Dog Breath, which was published in 1994, and in 1997 he won the Caldecott Honor for The Paperboy.

The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby, published in 2002, was the first complete graphic novel spin-off from the Captain Underpants series and appeared at #6 on the USA Today bestseller list for all books, both adult and children's, and was also a New York Times bestseller. It was followed by Super Diaper Baby 2: The Invasion of the Potty Snatchers, also a USA Today bestseller. The unconventional style of these graphic novels is intended to encourage uninhibited creativity in kids.

His stories are semi-autobiographical and explore universal themes that celebrate friendship, tolerance, and the triumph of the good-hearted.

Dav loves to kayak in the Pacific Northwest with his wife.

scholastic or paw print?

We love all the Day Pilkey Captain Underpants books, Super Diaper Baby, too. We have all the books in hardcover, and the odd thing is that books 5 and 8 while hardcover are from a different publisher, NOT Scholastic, but something called Paw Print, or some such. The dimensions of the book are smaller and the paper is newsprint instead of the nice glossy paper found in the Scholastic. I would love to have the complete Scholastic set. Wondering if anyone else had this experience? As for the books themselves: creative, inventive, lyrical, Pilkey truly is a master. Some folks may not like some of the language, I certainly don't enjoy saying "idiot" or "dumb". I understand it is part of the lexicon of young children, however I simply change the words to " silly" or leave them out altogether. Beyond that, I think they are marvelous. I am reading them to a 4 year old, not quite reading yet.

Another winner from Mr. Pilkey! My son is on the autism spectrum and Captain underpants is his current love. He is all about the flip o ramas, and this particular story has more than enough for for his flipping pleasure. Just an fyi, if your kid loves flipping as much a mine, the paperback edition (which we got) may not stand up to the love as much as the hardback ones. We have a lot of hardback editions, but my guy bought this one with his own $, so he chose the cheaper edition. We have had to use a lot of tape on the flipping pages ( they all tear eventually if you flip as much as we do), but that is part of the fun.

So my 4 year old loves these books ever since we saw the movie in theaters. It's gotten him interested in reading and I haven't heard him laugh so much as this series of books. It's very clever and has some jokes for older kids and adults (nothing too crude), but my MIL wanted to read a few after reading these to my oldest son. Just a heads up, since it's a chapter book, younger kids don't quite get the 'one more chapter... please!' doesn't work after you've read 5 chapters and they want to know what's going to happen.

My kid loves the Captain Underpants series. Only two problems though:

1) Why does anyone want to read about a cartoon character running around in their underpants?
2) My son reads them so fast we have to order in bulk.

Seriously, my son used to hate reading but read multiple books in the series at a record pace. I wish I had called Guiness Book of World records but who knew? I didn't even think he would finish one without being forced to read. +1 for the wife. Good decision.
