New York Times bestselling author Robin Cook’s “pressure cooker of a thriller” (Booklist) takes medical technology into a new realm, where everything we know about the human body—and the universe we live in—is about to be challenged.

Everyone assumes it’s just the flu—but when a powerful virus causes unexplained symptoms, the few left uninfected must discover a cure before they catch it, too...

After Cassy Winthrope’s boyfriend Beau displays brief, flu-like symptoms, he begins to act strangely. His body is stronger and faster, his mind shaprer. And suddenly the straight-edged guy who never skips class and hates big dogs is playing hooky and walking around with a bullmastiff.

Once Cassy shares these observations with their mutual friend Pitt, the pair notice that almost everyone else in their small college town seems to be infected with the same virus that Beau has. Could it be connected to the tiny black disks appearing everywhere, stinging those who pick them up?

Recruiting members of the community and medical experts unexposed to the disease that’s defying all diagnoses, Cassy knows she’s in a race against time. But can she figure out how to save the people she cares for—before it’s too late to reverse the changes?

I really enjoy reading all of Robin Cook's thrillers, but with all the craziness in today's world with our own pandemic of the COVID virus, this book seems to be more realistic.
I hope his next book is with Jack and Laura as those are some of his best books.

I liked it and was well paced, but couple of things are wrong. One was the way they found to combat the alien viral strain. That was a common cold, a rhinovirus. He makes it sound as if the world was basically sterile and they had to release a new strain of cold virus. I'm sorry, but the world is filled with hundreds of viruses, so the alien takeover would have had an uphill battle. As I read it, I was currently battling a cold so it seemed weird that it wasn't just discovered by accident that flus and colds would knock it out.

I've always been a fan of Robin Cook and even though this book was not like most of his medical mysteries I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It definitely raised many new alien ideas and considerations. It was still definitely a book I was not able to put down and kept me guessing until the very end. Way to go Robin!!

The condition of the book was misrepresented. I have purchased several "used" books on Amazon and they came in really nice shape. This was was obviously very used and pages were yelow and worn. I would not recommend this seller as the discription was very misleading. The book, I can recommend as Robin Cook's books are mosly all very good reads.

I found this book in a shelter on the Appalachian Trail, and was immediately enthralled by the over-the-wall tacky writing and completely inaccurate application of science. Robin Cook has created his own reality, literally. At one point he refers to a female's character's bosom as "awesome."

I'm about a third of the way through, and plan to read this book over the course of my lifetime, hopefully several times.

This book was very intense as a virus infects the World! Sound familiar? The end was quite the cliff hanger.

A typically Great Robin Cook medical thriller with the added thrill of great Science Fiction. Hard for me to put down. More please.

This time it was far out. Not the usual Cook’s brew. In the age of Corona anything is possible. A mother good ride.

I enjoyed that Robin Cook presented a different angle to alien invasion while touching on the subject of how humans have not appreciated planet Earth and are depleting its resources. It makes you take a step back and wonder if we truly deserve this planet we call home.
