Emily Brightwell was born in the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia. Her family moved to Southern California in 1959 and she grew up in Pasadena. After graduating from California State University Fullerton, she decided to work her way around the world and started in England. She didn't get any further because she met future her husband there, got married and moved back to California. While living in Long Beach, she decided to pursue her dream and become a writer - despite having two children and a full-time job. She began the Mrs. Jeffries series in 1993 with "The Inspector and Mrs. Jeffries" and has written forty more mysteries in the series in the following twenty-nine years. Emily has just finished (January 23) writing the next Mrs. Jeffries mystery : "Mrs. Jeffries Aims to Win" to be published in August 2023. Almost all books are available as audio books (unabridged) and most are available in large print format.

Now that her children are grown and have left home - Emily and her husband live in Northern Nevada. Her books are also sold in the United Kingdom, Japan, and Hungary. Emily is a relieved Everton FC supporter, loves Korean TV dramas, and "high altitude" baking.

I've grown very attached to Mrs. Jeffries and her motley crew, who provide sub rosa crime-solving assistance to their master, Inspector Witherspoon. These are delightful books, even if highly improbable with respect to the warm & mutually respectful relationship between the "upstairs" and "downstairs" characters. But if you can get past your compulsion for historical accuracy in that regard, you'll enjoy the stories, which relate the adventures of the Inspector's household staff as they assist him in solving crimes--totally unbeknownst to him.

Mrs. Jeffries is a wonderful character; her nightly conversations with the Inspector over a glass of port are highly entertaining, since she uses these opportunities to gently implant in his head all the investigative strategies he probably wouldn't think of on his own. You'd think that this would make the Inspector a ridiculous character, but it doesn't. He is a man of such good will, innocence and charity that you can't help but like and admire him, if for no other reason than the egalitarian & open way in which he interacts with his help. The plots are simple but not excessively so, and the cast of clue-chasing, mystery-solving cooks, footmen, housemaids, neighbors and working class associates makes for a fun and enjoyable read every time.

I loved this Mrs. Jeffries Christmas mystery. The victim was a Baron and so the Home Secretary wanted his murder solved quickly. The victim and his whole family were miserly and very much disliked. I still found it to be a very interesting mystery. I love the Inspector and the others who work to find the clues and solve the mystery.

I love the Mrs. Jeffries series and I have read them all more than once. I have never been disappointed in any of the books, and this one is just as good as the others. The series takes place in Victorian England. Mrs. Jeffries is the housekeeper to a homicide Inspector. Mrs. Jeffries and the rest of the household help their Inspector (unbeknownst to him) solve homicides. Very well written. I look forward to new books coming in the series. This is probably my very favorite book series.
